Philadelphia: Title-less Town USA
Losers, Numbers May 21st. 2008, 12:00pm
Our new numbers guy, Max Wasserman, is now taking requests. A reader’s question: What the chances that each pro sports team from Philadelphia (Phillies, 76ers, Eagles, Flyers) could go 25 years without a title? Crunching the numbers – math rules – after the jump.
Reader Tim sent in a request. He wanted to know what the odds were of a city with all four major sports teams not winning a championship since 1983, for a total of 100 seasons (25 years x 4 sports).
The process for determining this probability isn’t too difficult. It involves multiplying the expected values of 100 Bernoulli distributions. A Bernoulli distribution has two possible outcomes, success or failure. The probability of success is a variable p, the probability of failure is, of course, 1-p. p is also the expected value of a Bernoulli distribution. For this simulation, the value chosen for each distribution is the probability that a team will not win a title in that year assuming everything is random. Ironically, this means that failure on the field is a success in the simulation.
Well Tim (who we can safely assume is from Philadelphia) now has a statistical basis for his bitching, as he put it. Assuming everything is random, the odds of none of the four teams winning titles in 25 years is 2.4%.
That certainly puts a damper on my justification for bitching. Being from the D.C. area, I ran the numbers for the Washington teams, who haven’t won a title since 1991 (I was five), for a total of 51 seasons (16 years x 3 sports + 3 years x 1 sport). The probability is only 16.8% for the District. Damn. First the Flyers get lucky and now this.
However, the City of Brotherly Love has nothing on Cleveland. They have not won a title since 1964, a total of 124 seasons (43 seasons x 2 sports + 38 seasons x 1 sport). The probability of zero titles in that time is 0.75%.
But cheer up everyone! Only a few more days until Indiana Jones plays the Nationals!

You were 5 in 1991??? I should leave. I don’t want to be the old guy at the club.

how can we honestly continue to call hockey a major sport?
it’s the big 3…and the second-tier.
and even golf sometimes gets better ratings than the NBA…same with nascar…
scratch that…it’s the NFL and college football…THEN everything else.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Globally, NBA shits on most sports as far as ratings.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Not sure if you took it into consideration (you don’t mention it) but did you account for the fact that most leagues weren’t at their current size the entire time? I didn’t see that taken into the distribution.
pretty solid otherwise though
May 21st, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Globally, soccer is the most watched sport of all. So who gives a flying christ what the foreigners think?
May 21st, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Except for the futball matches.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Thanks to Yao! the sole representative of 3B people

In a related comment, you know what the difference between patriotism and nationalism is?
It’s nationalism when a foreigner does it.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:10 PM
Is that true, though?
I’m not sure what China’s #1 sport is, but as soon as it becomes basketball, then NBA will be #1, if it’s not already.
~6 Billion Chinese can’t be wrong.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Good point nick. That comment is one in a billion.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:12 PM
The Dalai Lama would like a word with you Nick
May 21st, 2008 at 12:12 PM
im pretty sure it’s dodgeball…did you see the ratings for the Chinese/South Park Cows matchup a few years ago?
I’ll use my credit card.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Nick: It’s not an all or nothing deal. Even if basketball is China’s #1 sport, they’ll still watch soccer along with the rest of the world.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Maybe it’s just me but I honestly think these number crunching posts are a terrible waste of time and not interesting in the least.
Since I don’t have to read them I won’t and since I have made my feelings known on them now I won’t comment on them either.

Congrats Matt on finally being able to click, “I am old enough to enter this site”.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:16 PM
@Bear: That’s true. I guess I’m just assuming once people start watching hoops, they’ll realize soccer is teh gay.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:17 PM
Nick…we’ve tried NFL in Europe and they still watch soccer. so is Europe gay?
my discussion panel that i always take with me says yes, Europe is gay.
except for Amsterdam.

I doubt a mathematical formula exists to take into account the ownership exploits of Harold Katz, Norman Braman, and the current cabal that owns the Phils.
By the way, since you were born in 1986, I’ll kindly ask you to get off of my lawn.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:19 PM
Who cares about the NBA going ‘global’ when they can’t get 45 people to a Hawks or Timberwolves game in February. Try working on that one first.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:20 PM
I did this in Excel in 30 seconds with the current league sizes, and got 3.6%. So he probably did it correctly. I’m certainly not about to.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Brett Favre has been the QB of the Packers before you hit puberty.

@august: With rising gas prices, I’ve heard the commute from Tai Pei to Atlanta is brutal, especially during rush hour.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:24 PM

May 21st, 2008 at 12:27 PM
@ Nick
So that’s why there’s been an increase in petrol demand from China! David Stern strikes again…
May 21st, 2008 at 12:27 PM
@jibble: Yes I did take into account the fact that the leagues grew over time. It’s all covered.
@blumpkins: What, you don’t want another Wizards fan on the site?
May 21st, 2008 at 12:28 PM
+1 mmonast… it’s been a brutal week around here for the Clev… you guys get that Ikea yet?

Oh, and besides, isn’t the intern supposed to be a naive young guy? I’m perfect!
May 21st, 2008 at 12:38 PM
Teams that have settled in the city of Buffalo, such as the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Sabres have not won a championship since the Buffalo Bills won the 1965 AFL Championship.
I think Buffalo beats out Philly. I know Philly has 4 teams compared to Buffalo’s two, but Buffalo has had more chances to win titles
May 21st, 2008 at 12:38 PM
What does the cost of the Tea in China have to do with the fact Philadelphia is a sinkhole filled with losers who will never win and who idolizes a fictional boxer that lost while totally disregarding Joe Frazier who actually was champ
May 21st, 2008 at 12:38 PM
At least credit si.com for the original idea.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:39 PM
@ august lost that one to Cincinnati
May 21st, 2008 at 12:39 PM
@ the412: This is fun (#7 & #6)

smokin joe is/was the man.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:41 PM
c’mon, irish – Buffalo isn’t a real city. They can start crying heartbreak when they lose the Bills to Toronto, eh?
May 21st, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Spence: you’re thinking of Romanovia
That country has a Threeve percent chance of winning a title.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Just remember, if TBL offers you a cigar, you have to say yes.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:45 PM
@clown- Buffalo Bills lost 4 straight Super Bowls. Two to your favorite team, the Cowgirls. They should of won the first, but as we all know WIDE RIGHT Norwood couldnt come through. No team will ever go to 4 straight super bowls again
Buffalo Bills also had the greatest comeback ever by Frank Reich
May 21st, 2008 at 12:49 PM
@ Triston: I think Spencer is ignoring us
@Irish: Can Bills fans give Norwood a break, it was a 45-yard field goal. That’s not a gimme, it’s a fairly difficult kick.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:51 PM
I remember Reich orchestrating the greatest college comeback ever for Maryland. Who did he do that against? Hmmm, I wonder? U something?
May 21st, 2008 at 12:51 PM
go root for that horse-faced fuck some more you barrel wearing sacks of shit.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:51 PM
@ jibbles, Can’t say that I blame him. I still love watching those games on ESPN Classic.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Fuck that Jibble. That is what he was paid to do, that bastard
@cbh- i know, i know lol
May 21st, 2008 at 12:52 PM
It was on grass too. Not easy at all.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:55 PM
stop rubbing it in please. Bills no huddle offense driving down the field with seconds left. Jim the Machine gun Kelly set that up for Norwood. In the windy Sombrero in Tampa FL, Norwood should of made that. There was plenty of distance on the kick
May 21st, 2008 at 1:08 PM
@Irish:
It was a 47 yarder, his career long was 52. In 1991 he was 5/9 (56%) on 40-49 field goals. The league average was approximately %66 for that same range.
It wasn’t an easy play.Buffalo fans act like it was a chip shot.
May 21st, 2008 at 1:11 PM
@jibble- Steve Christie would of made it
May 21st, 2008 at 1:21 PM
Laces out!
May 21st, 2008 at 1:24 PM
@ 412, wait, so are you saying Norwood is Einhorn? Einhorn is Norwood?
May 21st, 2008 at 1:43 PM
Philadelphia: Title-Less Town USA… and recently named one of the 10 worst cities to raise a family in.
Way to go, Killadelphia!
May 21st, 2008 at 2:11 PM
And don’t forget, the least attractive city in America
But hey, they do have all of that History to look at.
