Yardwork: Dan Uggla Will Gaze Into Your Soul
Baseball May 21st. 2008, 9:50am
Marlins 3, D-Backs 2: Against his former team, Uggla popped his 14th homer of the season, in a game that the marked the first time the Marlins played a team with a winning record since May 1st. Brandon Webb awaits.
Astros 4, Cubs 2: Hunter Pence had three hits, including a grand slam, accounting for all of Houston’s offense a day after ending his 16- game hitting streak. Aramis Ramirez homered for the Cubbies (not the Astros) in the 4th, who were shut out the rest of the way.
Tigers 12, Mariners 8: Edgar Renteria had four hits and five RBI moving Detroit nine games under .500! (!!!) The Tigers got three other johnsons from Granderson, Guillen and Ordonez. On a sour note for Tigers fans, the bullpen gave up seven runs.
White Soxs 4, Indians 1: Jose Contreras outpitched C.C. Sabathia, and Jim Thome and Carlos Quentin hit solo homers to give the Sox their season-high sixth straight win. Tribe has lost four straight since the scoreless innings streak by starters was snapped.
Orioles 12, Yankees 2: Adam Jones (INSERT PACMAN JOKE/MAKE IT RAIN REFERENCE/TNA WRESTLING REMARK/SHOOTING PEOPLE IN THE FACE/LOVES LAS VEGAS/ANYONE GOT ANY GREEN?/CHRIS JOHNSON REPLACED HIS HAIR WITH THE TITANS/HE’S NOT PACMAN JONES/______ HERE) had four RBI and four hits and Daniel Cabrera got his 5th win. The O’s put up a 7-spot in the first inning.

I know that it is only May, but I seriously don’t think the Tigers will even be close to the playoffs by the end of the season.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:01 AM
The only solace I can take in this baseball season is that the Yankees were 9.5 games back at the same time last year. This season has been an improvement by comparison.

No mention of the Braves sweeping the double header? What gives? Nobody else won two games yesterday
May 21st, 2008 at 10:02 AM
i thought there were a lot of baseball fans on this site. How come this post averages 20 comments a day?

Hunter Pence is a man! An awkward, gangly gonna-hurt-himself-just-running-one-day man!
go stros
May 21st, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Because the season is so freaking long its hard to get into a heated debate. Besides, no one is close to a healthy A-Rod.
/Except all of the Florida Marlins!

@irish, because they made their own website Dem boys
May 21st, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Cole Hamels has a 16 inning shutout streak going.
And his wife is hot.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Yeah lets talk about the Braves – that last game ended rather abruptly with Ryan Church proving he doesn’t really know how to slide followed by the sweet sweet smell of ammonia.

Ugliest game of the night last night btwn the snakes and the pokey fish.
Nicknames are fun.

@beard- cmon now. you think im going to click on that link. Im no baseball fan. I was just wondering why this post lacks comments.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:08 AM
@irish, just because there are not 50 comments on the argument of lebron/kobe, doesn’t mean that this isn’t a popular post. When the discussion turns to money and baseball, the comments usually start coming in.

Oh, sweeping a doubleheader is nice. Beating the Mets is even better. Taking out a player at the end of the game is…well, even I’m not that mean. Go Braves!
May 21st, 2008 at 10:09 AM
I think Edgar Reteria is just too clique-ey, him and all his buddies.

Perhaps baseball fans are more civil due to their higher IQs?
May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Even Reche Caldwell thinks Dan Uggla needs to chill out.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Enjoy Erik Bedard, Seattle.
I know Baltimore is enjoying Jones/Sherrill.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Plus there’s not a lot to argue about. It’s the dbacks and everybody else. It’s science.

Everyone knows their favorite team is the best. Nothing to discuss.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:16 AM
1 First Place Teams and the Number 1 Pick. Yea. FUck Boston.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:18 AM
@Hef: not after you riled Him yesterday. I called a D-Backs swoon, and they lose that evening.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:20 AM
It also helps that these last place Yankees have ruined my enjoyment of the game.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 AM
There are a few things at work here. First, there is no Kobe/LBJ-type debate to fuel the baseball threads. Second, the Pittsburgh, Cinci, and Detroit posters can only say so much about their sucky/disappointing (the Pirates are more the former than the latter) teams. Lastly, I’d say that the baseball season hasn’t really taken on meaning until we get into June. So, there really isn’t a whole hell of a lot to say unless you want to talk fantasy baseball…which is dreadful.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:22 AM
Actually it’s the World Champion Red Sox and everybody else but it’s all good.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Plus, we’re already up to 25 posts, which is 25% more than our daily average according to irish.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Or 20% if you want to be “correct” or “accurate”.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:25 AM
I can’t wait to call them the world champion arizona baseball diamondbacks (again).
May 21st, 2008 at 10:27 AM
A la roman.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Same for the Reds (granted it was 1990)
May 21st, 2008 at 10:36 AM
I’m hoping to see the Pirates win the World Series again in my lifetime, but…seeing .500 again (this hasn’t happened since ‘92) would be thrilling.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Someone may have to check this, but I’m pretty sure that last night was the first time that the White Sox beat Sabathia in Chicago. 6 in a row! In first by 1.5! Detroit is 3 games behind the Royals for 4th! Good times.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:50 AM
I personally would like to utter the phrase, “I am glad we resigned him. He is a great player and he is going to help us win in the future”.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:51 AM
I know that the Sox had beat him 3 times before this, but I don’t know if this was the first time they did it in Chicago.
/too lazy to look this up.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Orioles crushed the Yankees!
I am loving this season so far.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:09 AM
@Beard, Rittyrich – I wrote about the Braves on my blog. Hey, if MLJ can self-promote, I can too, right?
May 21st, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Even when Cuz isn’t writing the Yardwork, I still have to see Marlins staring into my soul. That is one creepy face.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:24 AM
I just want to let everyone know that I am not bitching out on the Mets getting sept yesterday…trust me I barely slept last night…I am so pissed off I can’t contain it…but of course the job that pays me is having a major issue that fucking Spuer Roamn must fix…god I hate working at work..ATL…your team tooled us plus Yunel maanged to take out our best player…FUCK FUCK FUCk
May 21st, 2008 at 11:27 AM
atl: I love your self promotion so much I’m adding you to our blogroll. w00t!!
May 21st, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Atl: You had me at Braves blog and lost me at Matthew Stafford.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:35 AM
I hate to admit it, but pki is right. The Tigers won’t even sniff the playoff hunt. They are just too far under .500 right now to even contemplate that.
And for 412, you are also correct, my team sucks.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:39 AM
@Roman – I’m sure the fact that Glavine shut them down didn’t make it any better for you either. I’m not even being a smartass…I’m empathizing here.
@Hef – You like me! You really like me! I’m like a Minor League Jerk now. Well, maybe not quite…Semi-Pro Jerk.
@Ritty – Hey, I can’t please everyone! I’ll write a lot more about Auburn once the season rolls around…and not all bad stuff. As I say on my blog, I like to think I’m objective.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:41 AM
CORM – Any thoughts on the trade offer in the Yahoo league?
May 21st, 2008 at 11:41 AM
@ATL. I assume you will have nothing but good things to say about Arkansas’s football team (coach) this fall? I almost with UGA and the Hogs could play each other so we could set up some bet that I would be destined to lose.
May 21st, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Arkansas’ football program is probably the most interesting to me right now, actually. I wish someone would write a book on what’s happened there over the last few years between Nutt, Mustain, Broyles, et al. That’s some crazy shit.
As you can probably guess, I’m kind of indifferent toward Arkansas. I always liked Nutt (gosh, that sounds gay), and the prospect of Nutt and Dick together (sweet fancy Moses that’s gay) would’ve been neat. But seriously, I did always like Houston Nutt from the outside looking in. Seemed like a good coach, good motivator, etc. But of course I don’t follow Arkansas football that closely, so you’d probably be a better judge of his performance than me.
