Getting Ready for Summer’s Weekly Movie Chatter
Movies May 23rd. 2008, 1:45pm
With the weather across the country looking spotty at best this weekend, many of you may opt for movie theaters. If you couldn’t tell by our incessant mentions – Ironman is fantastic. We won’t spoil anything, two things worth mentioning: Robert Downey Jr. is tremendous, and this is Gwyneth Paltrow’s best work since Shallow Hal. If you loathe Downey because of his checkered life history, put it all aside. From the New Yorker: “He can make offhandedness mesmerizing, even soulful; he passes through the key moments in this cloddish story as if he were ad-libbing his inner life.”
A few readers have written that Harold and Kumar is a hoot, and we’ll try to coax the wife into seeing it; but we’re certain that the new Indiana Jones will be our our plate this weekend. Not sure which day of the week will be reserved for movie banter, but we’re targeting Wednesday. If you have any topics that you’d like to see discussed this summer, email those into us. All will be considered.

Definitely recommend both Iron Man and Harold and Kumar 2, both are very good.
May 23rd, 2008 at 1:52 PM
TBL, Shallow Hal? Is that on your DVD shelf too? How can you have such a great site and such awful, awful, taste in movies? Are you foreign? Is English your third or fourth language?
May 23rd, 2008 at 1:53 PM
I am looking forward to that Strangers movie. I wiki-ed the killings and it in no way says any of them wore creepy masks, which takes away from the fun in my opinion. Still looks creepy though!
May 23rd, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Harold and Kumar was especially good for me, seeing it with two “if we had the money or effort, we would be stoned all the time” friends, one Indian, who the group I was with teased relentlessly about the potential for a sequel starring them.
May 23rd, 2008 at 1:54 PM
Dude Hef, seriously. This is a freaking curse. I can’t get rid of this damn D snake. I feel like puking. Tan and purple?!? Who came up with this debacle of a logo?
May 23rd, 2008 at 1:55 PM
Jerry Colangelo.
May 23rd, 2008 at 1:56 PM
TBL, you simply got lucky assuming that Duets came out one year earlier than Shallow Hal or I’d have had your head on a pike.

Also, seriously, if you’re spending $15-20 per person for gas, tickets, and popcorn, if the big-screen experience isn’t as important as the movie, use the Internet.
May 23rd, 2008 at 1:57 PM
I haven’t been to the theaters since my 2nd ex-wife took me to see Tootsie.

I once got caught making out with Nick at Schindler’s List 2: Electric Bugaloo.

Weather looking spotty? TBL are you aware that it is supposed to be the nicest it has been ALL year in the tri-state area? If by spotty, you mean, amazing, well, right on.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:00 PM
/Sorry, couldn’t resist.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:01 PM
I’m with you TBL on Downey. He was very, very good. Not like that robot that played Superman.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:01 PM
I didn’t get caught.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:01 PM
TBL must get his weather reports from John Bolaris.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:02 PM
i’ll wait on the DVD for everything, except maybe Batman. BTW if anyone needs a Lost fix, Jensed at ew.com has some thoughts on the finale:

Did the German’s apologize for bombing Pearl Harbor? Hell no.
-10 to StalkingErinAndrews for apologizing to Clown.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:05 PM
Hef, I’m with TBL, Shallow Hal was great.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:05 PM
I wasn’t apologizing to clown, just everyone else for making a Brokeback Mountain reference.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:06 PM
@pnwed; Thanks for that. “Needs a Lost fix” is an excellent description of me right now.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:07 PM
Fine, I’ll knock it down to -5 for ambiguity.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:07 PM
cbh – how do you watch Shallow Hal and no Godfathers? Are you from Europe or something?
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Harold & Kumar was decent, but not that great. The last movie I saw before that in the theater was “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” which was outstanding.
“Iron Man” might be the only movie I see until “The Dark Knight.” That flick is gonna be like sixteen different kinds of kickass.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:09 PM
You can stick you sorries in a sack.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:10 PM
Im a huge Indiana Jones fan, and I saw the movie last night. I thought it was a little outlandish and far fetched but still fun like the others. There will be some people that hate it though. Iron Man was great and Harold and Kumar was surprisingly funny. Just waiting on The Dark Knight now…
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:11 PM
i don’t even know what that means…
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:11 PM
Jack, I am counting down the days to The Dark Knight, I would probably already pre order the DVD if could.
Clown, I lived in Europe, maybe that explains it.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:11 PM
@ Gonzo loves Crosby’s five hole
I still don’t know what that means
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:12 PM
@Gonzo: For I am Costanza, Lord of the Idiots
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:12 PM
I’ve seen Shallow Hal and none of the Godfathers, born and raised in CA
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:13 PM
Bye Bye Jugdish.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:13 PM
I’m curious about the price of admission in different parts of the country. Mo is $8.50 in my town.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:14 PM
Breaking news: RomanWarHelmet is caught stalking Kirsten Dunst
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:15 PM
6.50 with a student ID… love that student ID
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:15 PM
$9.50 in northern ca
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:16 PM
count me as another who is counting the days until The Dark Knight. Just watched Batman Begins on FX the other night.
Hulk, maybe. I like Edward Norton….and yes Iron Man was great!
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:16 PM
Clown: Fuckin awesome.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:17 PM
No theaters for awhile. Already been screwed by Baby Mama and Leatherheads this year, not to mention that Ryan Phillips chick flick.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:17 PM
I’m not as picky as the rest of you when it comes to movies (probably because I get 2 free tickets every Tuesday), so I’m looking forward to more than just Dark Knight.
I’m sure Wall-E will be good, because all the Disney-Pixar movies are good.
I’m looking forward to seeing Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D if only to see how that format translates for a full length movie.
I’m interested to see Get Smart. There’s a lot of possibilities with the concept, if the studio doesn’t fuck it up.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:18 PM
@Onterrio
I too have never seen a Godfather movie. People are always shocked when I say that.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:18 PM
Paltrow’s resume in the last few years isn’t impressive. What did i miss? And I never said Shallow Hal was anything special … but Susan Ward is in it, so automatically, it’s decent. Sort of like Wild Things 2.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:18 PM
$14.50 in Cleveland, but we have a booming economy, so it’s no big deal.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:19 PM
I’ve seen the godfathers and after about 9 hours of something that could have been 2 I gave the set away.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:19 PM
$8 in FL
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Indeed. But that’s why you NEVER get movie food, and you always sneak a bottled water in. That way, it’s just $20 for the two tickets.
Im a bit surprised to hear that gas was a factor in a trip to the movies.
As for the weather … that map looked gloomy. But Florida’s weather is ALWAYS great.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:20 PM
Get Smart could be good and Hancock looks better after seeing the full length trailer. Also Pineapple Express will be a must for any stoners or Apatow fans.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:20 PM
@clown- that could be your boy Mike NYC. He is a die hard Mets fan as well
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:22 PM
irish, when is his punishment up? I really hope he’s not commenting under a pseudonym
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:22 PM
$14.50? so much for getting you and a date into a movie for a dime like my grandparents did.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 PM
If that was me I would have had my finger in her asshole…whoops..no he looks nothing like me
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 PM
I saw the commercials for Get Smart. Steve Carell looks like every other character he’s played.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:24 PM
Did Cleveland get that Ikea yet?
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:24 PM
@clown- after memorial day he is coming back.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:24 PM

That’s the link for New York weather. 70 and sunny tomorrow, 75 Sunny Sunday, 80 Sunny Monday. Still waiting for your explanation of spotty weather TBL.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:25 PM
/the TBL I know
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:26 PM
after Memorial Day huh? Well let me get this out of my system….
Obama!…..OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBAMA…WOOOO..WOOOO…YEAH
Ok done
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:26 PM
What if you admire Downey because of his checkered life history?
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:27 PM
@WhoDey: That’s why I’ll see anything with Charlie Sheen.
/not entirely true
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:28 PM
@TBL: Come down to Florida and live in 90-95 degree heat for 6 months of the year and get no seasons and see how it is.
I don’t drive, but the girl does, and because I’m not hurting for money, thanks to scholarships, and she’s not employed, sometimes I pay for her gas. And it factors in.
We smuggle water in and I buy child tickets from the ATM at the theater ($6.00 instead of like $8.50 for adults), which the ushers never check, but I am also frequently asked about smoothies and things from outside the theater, which, while cheaper, still adds like four or five bucks.
Movies are never cheap.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:31 PM
@rockabye nelson- how do you get away with buying children tickets for yourself at the movies?
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:32 PM
Hef?
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:37 PM
I’m holding out for The Dark Knight
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:37 PM
@irish: The ATM’s across from the ticket window, and all you have to do is select it from the screen. The ushers don’t care what kind of ticket you have, so long as they’re ripping one.
@Nick: Girlfriend isn’t content to smuggle free water in; she needs a smoothie she won’t even finish. That’s great.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Did you see Cars? That movie sucked, Rattatiouy or whatever wasn’t that great either. Wall-E does look good though and I will probably see that one in the theatre for my kids.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:44 PM
The closest theater to me is $10.50 a ticket and $16 for parking. The one movie I have seen there in a year is Iron Man, and it was worth it. Otherwise I tend to wait for the DVD. However, I will be going to the IMAX on Navy Pier for the opening of Dark Knight.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:46 PM
BTW how ridiculous is it that last time I went to the movies I had to pay for my 2yr old, the policy is anyone over 12mos. WTF?
this is awkward, i’m the only parent in here huh.
/slowly exits room
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:51 PM
@diesel
Your kidding me. Parking? WTF? Is this a “downtown” area?
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:53 PM
Even if it’s a downtown and you need to park in a garage, most theaters should validate parking. And if they don’t, I wouldn’t consider going there.
May 23rd, 2008 at 2:53 PM
@diesel- you know those flying swings down there on Navy Pier? those things are fucking dangerous. I almost hit the side of the building last summer all wasted
May 23rd, 2008 at 3:10 PM
Yeah it is downtown Chicago near the river. The parking is validated, that’s why it is only $16 instead of normal prices.
May 23rd, 2008 at 3:44 PM
The ONLY reason to go to Navy Pier if you’re a Chicago resident is to see a movie in IMAX. Tourists = Most Annoying People Ever (at least they are to me at places like Navy Pier and Michigan Avenue)
May 23rd, 2008 at 3:53 PM
Mocking tourists, sportsgal? How edgy.
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:04 PM
the whole “we” thing when writing a blog is a little weird to me, but it’s great when it comes out in sentences like the above.
May 23rd, 2008 at 8:36 PM
I watched indy 4 yesterday and never left the house.
