And That’s a Wrap!
Athletes and Celebrities, Blogging, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings May 30th. 2008, 5:15pm
What better way to peace out for the month than with Cheryl Cole? Actually, the month ends tomorrow – and the last post of our favorite month in the blog’s two-year history will culminate with Cousins of Ron Mexico live-blogging Kimbo Slice’s national TV debut. Recapping a fun and busy four weeks:
* Tony Kornheiser took a buyout from the Washington Post and then talked to us.
* Dan LeBatard guest-blogged for the site.
* Actor Jerry O’Connell stopped by.
* Tom Brady – the man, the myth, the legend – got huffy with ESPN.
* Joe Posnanski.
* Post-Bizzinger bedlam.
* When a star athlete is boozing in a bar, shirtless with dudes, it’s a hoot.
* Bill Simmons drama with ESPN. There are many potential for reasons for the rift.
* The Bulls got lucky.
* Cedric Benson’s boat party.
In the immortal words of Gilbert Arenas: Get drunk and make bad decisions.

The Cubs overcame two different 8-run deficits to beat the Rockies 10-9 today. Best record in the majors.
Bud Light, suck one.

@Diesel – When I saw that they were down 8-0, I turned the game off. Damn, that’s crazy.

The first game of the Finals isn’t until Thursday?
Jesus, is it any wonder the NFL is about 100x more popular than the NBA?
May 31st, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Mike, the NFL makes you wait 2 weeks til the Super Bowl. Your correlation makes no sense. In fact, the NBA and NFL don’t fight for viewers.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:09 AM
Gonzo, if you haven’t noticed, NFL players take a little bit more of a beating than NBA players. Just a little. Their rest is understandable — they actually need it.
Between Divisional and Conference Championship games, there’s a one week break anyway. Why on earth do NBA players need six days between games? They should be playing Monday, at the latest.
And you’re right — they don’t compete for viewers, and if they did, the NBA would be out of business. Their playoffs take two months to complete — if you don’t think awful scheduling has anything to do with shitty ratings, you’re kidding yourself.

Jesus, is it any wonder the dodo bird is extinct?
/makes just as much sense

Clown, sometimes you are hopelessly retarded.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:16 AM
clown how does it feel being one loss away from losing our bet? ive been waiting to needle you for like 5 hours.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:19 AM
Mike NYC, they are starting on Thursday to try to maximize ratings, which they will. This will be the highest rated series since MJ was playing. The NFL doesn’t play the Super Bowl on the Friday after the conference championships – why should the NBA rush their product, especially when the schedule was already determined and it involves the league’s marquee franchises?
If you want to be an NFL sheep, that’s fine. It doesn’t mean you have knock another sport.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:19 AM
Sure NFL players take much more of a beating. But the NBA lasts for 9 months, if you make it to the finals. I think a week break is nice for the cities involved. By the time it’s over, the fans of each team will wonder where the time went. And I guarantee the players want the rest.

Clown, I like your thinking. You make some interesting, intelligent points. You should write for a blog.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:21 AM
fetch, you’re gonna see the comeback of all comebacks. Get ready for some festering hemorrhoids.
And I totally believe you’ve been waiting to type that for five hours. Can’t you go out with Rod Benson or something in ND? You’re young and it’s Friday night.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:26 AM
i’m sick damnit. besides i have to get up super duper early tomorrow. if only i could hang out with rod benson, and bill simmons as a matter of fact.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:29 AM
Rush their product? If the Finals go seven games, the playoffs will have lasted about 60 days. That hurts their ratings in the long run, and their product.
From a casual fan’s perspective, the playoffs have no flow whatsoever. And it makes it a lot less interesting trying to get into watching these games. But who cares what an NFL sheep has to think anyway!
May 31st, 2008 at 12:30 AM
I’m glad we agree. Have a good evening.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:40 AM
Just one more thing: the NFL Draft (you know, Commish at a podium, reading names aloud) did about the same TV rating as Suns/Spurs Game 3 the same weekend.
May 31st, 2008 at 12:43 AM
Mike, if the argument was “Who has better ratings”, then you have won by a landslide. Let’s just enjoy these NBA finals, no matter when they start.
