Ken Griffey Jr. and the What-If Game
Baseball, Numbers May 30th. 2008, 3:00pm
You like the number crunching. Admit it. If you send in requests, our math guy, Max Wasserman, will take a stab at it. With Ken Griffey Jr. nearing his 600th homer, we felt like playing what-if. What if he didn’t have five brutal years worth of injuries? Max broke out the calculator, and what follows may surprise you. As required reading, you must read about Griffey’s 1989 Upper Deck card. Great stuff.
Someday very soon, Ken Griffey Jr. will hit his 600th career home run, reaching a milestone that only five other players have reached. It’s an amazing accomplishment to be sure, but with Griffey, it feels like he should have reached 600 home runs earlier than this. The numerous injuries he suffered since the turn of the millennium affected his performance and ultimately his record-breaking potential. So, TBL has asked me to project how many home runs Griffey could have hit at this point had he not lost so much time to injuries.
First, peruse Junior’s stats.
The injury years in question are 1995 and 2001-2006. (Remember that 1994’s fewer number of games was due to the strike.) As such, those are the years that we will be projecting. Since this is just an estimate, I’m going to use a method that is simple and that will likely underestimate the number of home runs Griffey could have had by now. Simply put, determine the rate of home runs per plate appearance for those years and multiply by an approximate number of plate appearances that could be expected for a full season. So here’s the projected data for those years:

Putting it together with the actual data gives these potential stats for Griffey:

That’s right, had Griffey stayed healthy all those years, he could already be at 700 home runs, over 100 homers more than he is at now. Comparing his projections with the all-time home run champions, both natural and chemical, over the first 19 full seasons:

And this is a relatively conservative estimate. Since the injuries also affected Griffey’s swing and performance, his home run rates could be even higher. There is no question he would have been the all-time leader in career home runs if not for the injuries.
Although Griffey will soon reach an amazing milestone, he will always be in the “what could have been†group of players. (Here he is with another member of that group.) But when a player accomplishes enough to ensure their place in the hall of fame and people still talk about “what could have beenâ€, you know that player is one of the greatest of all time.

Do kids still collect baseball cards these days?
May 30th, 2008 at 3:04 PM
So TBL is on auto-pilot the rest of the day.

Someday very soon, Ken Griffey Jr. will hit his 600th career home run
Have you watched him lately? Don’t count your chickens.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:07 PM
I once wrote a post about how Ted Williams should have killed 300 Japanese pilots in WWII if stupid baseball hadn’t gotten in the way.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:07 PM
Jr was my favorite player in the 90’s.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:08 PM
The college fund for my 2 year old will not get any larger because of my 10 Ken Griffey Jr. rookie cards.
/anyone want’em?
May 30th, 2008 at 3:09 PM
I hated Jr in the 90’s.. mostly because it was him and Frank Thomas always battling for home run stats, and Griffey was the bigger star. Can’t deny that the kid is one of the best though.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:10 PM
Pretty straightforward but it compares well to the other 2 intern posts
As a kid the players I collected were Bonds and Mo Vaughn (some choice) because my friends snapped up all the Jeters, Griffeys and other more likable players. Its nice to know that I was that naive as a kid to believe in those two.

Any relation to Ken Griffey, Sr.? I liked that guy.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Rex, Jr. is his daughter.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Never heard of him.

I think the two biggest whatifs are Mantle (injuries like Griffey) and Ted Williams (5 years at war). The numbers those guys would have put up are astounding.

Thanks for the picture. I was at the Kingdome that day, and it was the loudest place I think I have ever been. I still get goosebumps 12 years later.

Next project, calculate how many wins the Cavs would have with Kobe and how many the Lakers would have with LeBron.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:21 PM
i’d say it’s a possiblitly, but to say no question is a little bit much.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:24 PM
There we go
May 30th, 2008 at 3:25 PM
He seemed like a punk in Little Big League, so I never liked him.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:26 PM
Plus, Mantle thought he was going to be dead at 40 like his father and uncle and everyone else in his family. If he had a solid advisor, helping him plan for the future he would have been the greatest evar!
May 30th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
I bought a few packs of baseball cards a couple months back just for fun. I have some killer ones saved away from my youth.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
My son has been collecting cards. He’s six and it’s helping him learn the basics. I still recommend them for kids.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:31 PM
Had Eddie Gaedel been built like TBL he clearly would have hit 700+ homeruns.

May 30th, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Certainly didn’t hurt that Griffey played his whole career in two puff divisions, but nevertheless, he would be the homerun king hadn’t he been cut down by injuries. I’m still pulling for him to keep going.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Intern Bill wouldn’t have used that many words to explain it, however.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:33 PM
The automatic bid to the HOF for hitters has always been 3,000 hits, or 500 HRs. Of course guys under the PED era are ruining that. However, here is a what if. What if Dave Kingman reached 500 HRs? Would his ridiculous K total (1816) and low batting avg (.236)still keep him out? I do not think anyone near his HR total has other bad totals like that.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:34 PM
@Rex: Obviously I would have spelled Adolf correctly. You know me better than that.

TBL, if you want to pass stuff off as stats-heavy, make it a little more complicated than homers per PA * PA.
We’re dumb, but not that dumb.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:34 PM
@sparty
Adam Dunn and Lance Berkman will, someday.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:34 PM
/made more realistic’er
May 30th, 2008 at 3:35 PM
@Rex
That van better not have windows.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:36 PM
@Maggs: Dave Kingman had something like a career .300 OBP.
Dunn and Berkman regularly flirt with .400+
May 30th, 2008 at 3:36 PM
@Maggs,
Lance Berkman is a career .304 hitter. Adam Dunn is a good comparison. he is in his 8th season and has 252, still about 200 HRs shy of Kingman. I don’t think he gets to that many.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:37 PM
ADAM DUNN FLIRTS WITH .400?! ARe you nuts?
May 30th, 2008 at 3:37 PM
Kids are more into pink vans these days. White is so played out.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:37 PM
@swan: No. Why?
May 30th, 2008 at 3:38 PM
Sorry, Nick. I should have given you more credit. I was just going with a hybrid of Adolf Hitler and Adolph Coors, two men who I wish never existed.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:38 PM
.400 OBP??? Yeah. Look at the chart.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:39 PM
Here’s one with his stats instead of a chart.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:40 PM
hef, not you too…
/never gets old
May 30th, 2008 at 3:42 PM
Me too? I invented oprah.com. I designed the website and put into existence just so that I could send people there as a joke. I invented the internet so that I could invent that website so that I could send people there. I traveled back in time and banged Bill Gates’ mom so that computers would become better so that i could invent the internet…
/this continues for awhile
May 30th, 2008 at 3:43 PM
Seriously gettin’ old, Hef. This is probably the best comparison for on base percentage as it relates to HOFers.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:43 PM
Don’t go back too far. You’ll piss Jesus off.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:44 PM
Saw the “thingslikethishappen” tag and didn’t fall for it. I feel like a man.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:45 PM
@Nick: I’d make fun of Jesus again, but I might annoy a mental midget from the sunshine state.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:47 PM
Hef, I think irish really believes that it’s you making all the Jew jokes.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:47 PM
Google Analytics says otherwise, Hefferton M. Hefner of Arizona.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:48 PM
That’s funny. I believe you checked too.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:51 PM
Oh, this was the link in the last paragraph of the post. It kind of got mangled in posting.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:51 PM
Seriously, I could give two shits about what anybody says to defend Lance Berkman or Adam Dunn. I hate them both equally. They are not athletes and they are always out of shape. They make millions of dollars because they were born larger than most humans. They are not talented and they strike out like a mother fucker. Sure Lance is having a fine first quater of the season, but you know what? Fuck him, he sucks and I hate seeing him succeed. Sorry.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:54 PM
Athletes who suck in Magglio’s world: Babe Ruth (fat bastard), any fat offensive lineman ever, Wilt (anyone that tall oughtta score 100!), Shaq
May 30th, 2008 at 3:57 PM
And of course, logically, age would have no affect and at his current age of 38, he’d still be hitting dingers at the same rate he did through his 20s.
May 30th, 2008 at 3:58 PM
Oooohhh, diss.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:01 PM
Wow, maggs, you get mad because Berkman doesn’t look like TBL, yet worship at the Church of St. DickRod.
I wish I knew how your brain worked.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:04 PM
Adam Dunn helped me win my league last year. He’s all good in my book.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:15 PM
Shaq was only good because he was fatter than everyone else.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:23 PM
@ Magg
Don’t get all pissy because Berkman and Lee are fucking up the NL this year. Just lay back and take it honey.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:28 PM
@all
If you like Berkman and his eye shadow then that is just, like, your opinion man.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:33 PM
As long as your talking about the all important OBP% ill go along with adam dunn somewhat resembling a batter that could be a .400 obp. but that’s only cause pitchers are confoundedly scared of him for some reason. he’s a 249 career hitter, which isnt even good for a power hitter that strikes out a lot.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:34 PM
besides, im not impressed in any way by a .400 obp from a middle of the order/power-type hitter. if he could hit for shit it would be over .450 and his walks would be up and K’s down. but he cant, so he regularly looks feeble at the plate, adam dunn…. pft.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:38 PM
im not impressed in any way by a .400 obp from a middle of the order/power-type hitter. That’s actually no surprise at all, given some of the comments you’ve made in the past.
Let’s just say that I’ll take a guy who has a swing that works so well as to make him the 20th hardest guy in all of baseball (active) to get out.
Outs = bad.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:40 PM
if he could hit for shit it would be over .450 and his walks would be up and K's down.Because there are just so many power guys with OBPs above .450.
Scans list. Yep, 4.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:03 PM
I love all these made up stats you have Nick. 20th hardest to get out. All I said is if he could HIT FOR SHIT, his obp would be up and k’s down. he cant hit for shit. problem solved.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:05 PM
It would stand to reason that if he couldn’t hit for shit, he’d make a lot of outs, no?
He doesn’t.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Ok, enjoy the glorious career of adam dunn tanking fly balls off his dome and striking out more than he hits homers and walks and probably basehits combined, im too lazy to check because i simply do not care cause I know adam dunn is a chump. i would never want him on my team, unless he wanted to DH for the sox cause Thome is a shell.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:11 PM
People would realize how good Adam Dunn is if the team were better.
By people, I mean Cincy fans. They’re retarded, by and large. They’d rather have Freel.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:14 PM
I don’t mean to inject myself into the middle of an argument, but swandog you have a pretty backwards argument
May 30th, 2008 at 5:21 PM
yea, but adam dunn stinks, so it all works out in the end. i just jumped in blind as well
seriously, people… arguing over adam dunn? must be friday… cause adam dunn’s got a swing like a rusty gate.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:22 PM
He’s no Carlos Gomez, thats for sure.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:44 PM
hah.
May 30th, 2008 at 6:03 PM
And yes that was sarcasm. Although I do love me some Carlos.
