Watching all these Lakers/Celtics 1980s games on ESPN Classic has us wondering: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA career was extended by at least four years thanks to the robotic consistency of the indefensible sky hook. When the Lakers captured the title in the Garden in 1985, Brent Musburger asked the lithe Jabbar – the series MVP, averaging 30 points per game – whether or not he’d be coming back for a 17th NBA season at the age of 38. Cap would play four more seasons, averaging double-figures in each of them.

If Dwight Howard develops one, can he play 20 seasons? Shaq has a baby hook, but uses it sporadically at best. He’d probably have to shed at least 50 pounds and incorporate a sky hook to milk out another three seasons. Will Tim Duncan learn one?
