Glazer: The Bears Defense Tried to Hurt Benson in Practice to Ensure Thomas Jones Would Start
Media Gossip/Musings, NFL June 10th. 2008, 11:43am
Cedric Benson’s tumultuous tenure as running back of the Chicago Bears came to an end late yesterday when the Bears cut the former Texas star following a DUI arrest over the weekend. How much did his teammates despise of him? NFL reporter extraordinaire Jay Glazer went on the Dan Patrick show this morning and offered up an insane depiction: Benson was so disliked, the defense tried to injure him in practice. “One year, they tried to hurt [Benson] to make sure that Thomas Jones was going to be the starter. That’s how bad it was … they went after him.”
Glazer later added he heard this from about 10 Bears. In the immortal words of Patrick Swayze: There’s always barber college.

Yet Rex Grossman remained off limits? Methinks they ordered the code red on the wrong guy.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
You want Brian Urlacher on that shitty runningback – You need Brian Urlacher on that shitty running back!
June 10th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
@CRM. Injure Grossman to get Mc Nown the starting job? Everyone would have known the fix was on.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:47 AM
That Glazer is indefatigable.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:48 AM
He’ll land somewhere.
Texans, anyone?
June 10th, 2008 at 11:50 AM
damn, he must have been one big douchebag for that shit to be true…i dunno how credible it is tho.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:50 AM
@MikeNYC. I was thinking more along the lines of the Travis County jail system.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Speaks volumes on the Bears’ Defense. And Jay Glazer is a “Glaze Face.” I dont know why TBL has boners for such idiots.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:52 AM
McNown? Was Rex Grossman the Bears quarterback in 1999 and I didn’t know about it?
June 10th, 2008 at 11:53 AM
@ Mike NYC:

June 10th, 2008 at 11:54 AM
@ cool_rick: what’s your beef with Glazer? He’s spot on way more than almost any other NFL reporter…
June 10th, 2008 at 11:54 AM
What jobs are open to someone who is unliked by so many people, players and fans alike? Right now, the only option that comes to mind is the coach of Chelsea.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:54 AM
Next up, Jerry O’Connell post regarding the Presidential Candidates stance on economic prosperity.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:54 AM
Benson has “Bengal” written all over him. Or Denver, which is the NFL’s version of The Land of Misfit Toys.
Also, once Benson arrived in Bears’ camp after his holdout, he actually did complain that the D was trying to hurt him. To quote Arthur Lange: “Waaaaah!”

June 10th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
denver would be very stupid to touch benson after the travis henry and maurice clarett debacles. kevin jones is better than benson. why not go after him instead?
suitable places for benson: houston, san diego, green bay
June 10th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
The rumor wasn’t that the defense was TRYING to hurt him, it’s that they weren’t doing the normal “camp-level” hitting during practice. They went full out whenever he got the ball because they felt he had an attitude problem.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
And the defense allowed Kyle Orton to live?
I call bullshit.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
I see Benson in a Chicago Enforcers uniform.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Jay Glazer always looks like he got back from getting his face Turtle Waxed.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:00 PM
@CBH. My bad, I was thinking of Orton, not Mc Nown, although your vast knowledge of failed Bears first round draft picks is indeed impressive.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Everyone likes Kyle Orton, he’s a fun guy who enjoys boozing so people tend to overlook how bad he sucks at football.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:02 PM
Orton’s got goiter under that chin fur
June 10th, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Yeah he’s goofy looking, but he’s a reporter not at model…

Much like asparagus, Sugar Smacks* has an interesting effect on one’s urinary tract output. The body apparently can’t process that much sugar at once.
*Spence, there was a time, before the Food Nazis struck, that Honey Smacks were called Sugar Smacks. Right about that time, Ding Dongs became King Don’s. Assholes…

for anybody watching the futbol, why is arragones so enamored with Marcos Senna? The guy has Cesc Fabregas on the bench, for god’s sake!

was anyone else ever disappointed the first time they had a Lunchable? We begged my mom to get them, and realized all the meat, Turkey, Salami, whatever, tasted like Hot Dog.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Apparently Dunkaroos are still being made. From the wikipedia machine:
While most people believe that Dunk-a-Roos are no longer produced, this is false, and they can still be found in places such as Sam’s Club. They are still very popular in Canada.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:34 PM

@Ark: You dont need to put anything in it. Consume as is as far as I’m concerned. Good stuff.
@Spence: Used to be. Last time was at the Rage concert last year at Alpine Valley. A great show became even better. Too bad they only played for a hour and a half. Bastards.

I’d like to give a shout out to my boy Lucky and his delicious charms. Always the #1 cereal for this guy. I’d also like to say what’s up to Oreo O’s. A pretty killer cereal once they introduced marshmallows up into the mix.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Good call Arkbadger, that is the one “healthy” cereal I would eat.
Question: Did anyone actually have the balanced breakfast they always showed in the ads for cereal?
June 10th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
google Dunkaroos. you will find numerous message boards of people wondering where to get it. ah, fat kid snacks… delicious.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
frosted mini wheats? fuck that shit. if i want cereal that’s good for me, ill eat oatmeal.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Totally forgot about Apple Jacks! When we had sleep overs at my house, Apple Jacks and Corn Pops were the first two cereals to be taken out of the combination cereal pack.
@ark – big fan of the frosted mini wheats.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:41 PM
cbh…good question, that always boggled my mind. how is eating 500g of simple carbohydrates in a single meal balanced?
June 10th, 2008 at 12:42 PM
“C3POs: The Excitement and Adventure of a new force at breakfast” And then I tried them and realized Mom scammed me with little double Cheerios.
Voiced-over by the movie trailer dude?
June 10th, 2008 at 12:43 PM
any of the cereals with marshmallows were awesome. it was kinda like cheating. they weren’t even real marshmallows. the were like Mallow Rocks. and they were awesome.
the Ore-O’s cereal rocked. good call.
Dr.C: i was at that Rage concert. the t-storms all day long made that concert absolutely funckin insane. you could stand for maybe 5 seconds before someone would slip and take you out. hella fun time.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Frosted Flakes anyone?
June 10th, 2008 at 12:46 PM

June 10th, 2008 at 12:47 PM
Rage = proof that commies can make really bad music
June 10th, 2008 at 12:50 PM
@sparty. I remember those rage and wu tang concerts. Wish I would have been able to make it too one.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:50 PM
The worst thing was getting out of that parking lot at the end of the show; we sat there pushing others out around us til 2:30, and didnt get back to the Super 8 in Delavan til like 3:30..awful
June 10th, 2008 at 12:52 PM
My brother and I left in the middle of the encore once they went into a political speech. Great idea on our part because we managed to drive off before the massive amounts of cars turned the grass into a giant mud pit.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Wtf does Rage have to do with cereal having to do with Benson?
Let’s try to stay on-topic people.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:52 PM
yeah, the lot after was fun. but soon enough people started getting pissed and then it sucked. everytime i go to alpine, i end up leaving a pair of shoes there cuz they are ruined. it’s ridiculous.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:55 PM
after urlacher ate a bowl of golden grahams, he was listening to Rage while getting dressed for practice. this led to getting himself amped up and decided to try and injure benson to get his aggression out.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Am I the only midwest guy to have never seen a show at Alpine? Does River’s Edge count?
June 10th, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Does River’s Edge count?
Not sure, but Water’s Edge by Seven Mary Three is a good song so yes.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:59 PM
@hawkeye
never saw a show there. only Alpine Valley i knew of was the landfill ski resort in Michigan.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Jesus 115 comments! You would think this was about Curtis Enis or someone real important.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Hawk – I’m pretty sure that Rage show will be my first and last time seeing a show at Alpine. It’s too out in the middle of nowhere to make the trip worthwhile. Couldn’t booze because I had to drive back to Chicago after the show.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:01 PM
i told you that naming cereals could go on all day.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:04 PM
how is cereal not important?
June 10th, 2008 at 1:04 PM
Benson?
June 10th, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Cereal is important, unless it contains little marshmallows or dehydrated strawberries. Then it should be banned for life.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Alpine is pretty sweet for concerts. plus, it’s legendary. SG, you should give it another chance. grab a hotel and get drunk. or just make sure you don’t drive next time. tons of Po’s looking for drunk drivers afterwards.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:06 PM
Modiggs, Curtis Enis is busy being a ringer for a police softball team.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:09 PM
Even if you grab a hotel, you still have to DRIVE to the hotel. I’ll stick w/ shows here in Chicago. Hell, half the local bars offer a bus ride fully stocked with beer to and from the amphitheater in Tinley Park!
June 10th, 2008 at 1:10 PM
alpine will always have a special place in my heart…first time i ate boomers.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:11 PM
The hotel problem is the only thing wrong with alpine really. Great venue to see a concert though. Made even better by the underage kids parked next to us that gave up a couple cases of beer after seeing the cops checking id’s.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:12 PM
wow, talk about a thread that took on a life of its own.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:20 PM
I guess Alpine is a venue more suited for dudes and/or outdoorsy people. The location itself is really cool (amphitheater is at the bottom of a giant hill in the middle of the woods), but I have little tolerance for white trash drunks throwing mud and blowing their cigarettes in my face. Maybe if I was a pot smoker I wouldn’t find these people annoying.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:23 PM
sportsgal…they’re still annoying, weed just supresses the urge to kill them where they stand.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:27 PM
they have been cutting down on the weed lately with undercover cops all over. if you ask me, pretty much any concert is going to be a good time.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:28 PM
Yeah, that probably would have helped me… another girl and I got into the face of this asshole who was purposely chucking mud as hard as he could at people standing in front of him, then he tried to start a mosh pit. Needless to say, two girls screaming at him was enough to frighten him off.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:40 PM
Spencer, so you’re saying that weed is slowing down the genetic cleansing of America? It should stay illegal!
June 10th, 2008 at 2:05 PM
Great draft pick Jerry Angelo.
I will always remember his quote about how he would rather win the Heisman than beat Oklahoma. For me, that was enough to take him off the draft board.
