Yes most were pre-1975, and nuclear reactors are very safe today. Best news is that they have been refined by the French for the last 40 years… So the technology is really there to be safe.

@jibble, I remember when I was in college the hippy professor gave us a list of all the nuclear accidents in history, ostensibly to warn us that nuclear power was unsafe. It was a long list, but I noticed that something like 98% of them were pre-1975. She seemed embarrassed when I pointed this out.

@the 412 – I am absolutely all for more natural gas powered stuff. It burns a lot cleaner than oil, it is domestic, It is relatively cheap.

Nuclear is a very viable option, the problem is you say “Nuclear” and people think of “bomb”, but as an energy source it is fantastic, clean, cheap, reliable. I’d be for either of those shorter term solutions, but that is all being blocked at the moment as well.

It’s a nice idea, and I’d get behind it, but there’s also only so much money to go around. Any kind of long term solution is going to require huge infrastructure changes, and that’s going to suck regardless of what it is. I just worry that if we start moving on a short term solution, people (read: government) will just keep delaying the long term until we end up in a crisis again, rinse repeat.

I also don’t think current oil prices are going to stay at this level. A significant part of what’s driving the price up is speculation in the market and the weakened US dollar. I believe the latter is temporary, and the former is irrational. Things never return to as cheap as they were, but I’d be astonished if 5 years from now gas isn’t cheaper than it is right now.
