Starting Baseball’s 2nd Half with JD! (And Not Drew)
Baseball, Fantasy Sports July 17th. 2008, 6:00pm
Bottoms up, baseball fans. The second half is here! TMZ scored photos of the Yankees mustachioed 1B pounding some Whisky in Vegas recently. (Weird: We received this link from many readers, but now it’s dead. It’s still searchable on their site, but the link is gone.) Is this how the admitted HGH user spent his All-Star break?
If we could slide in a fantasy mention: We were in first place for the first four weeks of the season, and ended the first half in second-to-last. But Shawn Marcum, Rafael Soriano and Chris Young are coming off the DL, and we recently scooped up Homer Bailey and Rich Hill off waivers (suckas!).
Add those five guys to Lincecum and Peavy and we’re making a run at the playoffs.

I don’t think I’d be proud to have Homer Bailey.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:02 PM
I’m baffled as to why everybody loves this cheating douche. Fuck the Yankees.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Giambi is way better than Barry Bonds

Jack Daniels Baby!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:13 PM
what’s wrong with Homer Bailey? Good pitcher, just a bad, injury-riddled first half
July 17th, 2008 at 6:16 PM
TBL, did you read the response
July 17th, 2008 at 6:16 PM
TBL, nothing about this looks good.
He only has one pitch that he can throw for a strike, and it doesn’t even move that much.
Come to think of it, not a lot about this looks good, either.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:18 PM
You mean the same Rich Hill who got sent down, walked 28 guys in 26 innings in AAA, and is currently in rookie ball?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:19 PM
TBL – look at the Reds, for chrisakes, I had this guy in my league that thought he was the shit when he had Harang, Volquez, and other way more quality guy. The point is this: its the fucking reds!
Look at the Division!
July 17th, 2008 at 6:21 PM
another HOMER allowed BAILEY
July 17th, 2008 at 6:22 PM
i blame ESPN fantasy for raising our hopes on Homer Bailey. along with Hayden Penn.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:23 PM
and Phil Hueghes, who do we blame for his hype machine?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:26 PM
Onterrio – Baseball America
July 17th, 2008 at 6:27 PM
one is better off picking up Carl Pavano off waivers. It is going to be the biggest ironic twist in this baseball season. He is gonna come back to pitch in the yanks rotation to help make the playoffs. why? because Phil Hughes (blame canada?) and Ian Kennedy will not, and should not start again this season. Darrel Rasner is no Aaron Small, and Sidney Ponson is well, Sidney Ponson.
actually blame NY Media. as soon as Giambi said that the kids form reminded him of Clemens a few years ago in spring training, they ran with it.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:28 PM
who is better Chase Headley or Jay Bruce? now or the future?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:28 PM
George Dickel>Jack Daniels
Jack has the better marketing, but George makes the better whiskey.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:31 PM
we got an VW dealer here in Jersey, Jack Daniels.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:33 PM
Yeah sorry TBL, Bailey and Rich “Ankiel” Hill aren’t going to do shit for you.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:36 PM
if Homer pitches the way he pitched last Sunday he’ll be OK
July 17th, 2008 at 6:39 PM
Shhh… [puts index finger over TBL's lips] You’re adorable when you try to talk baseball.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:40 PM

July 17th, 2008 at 6:40 PM
Right now they are about equal in terms of production. Bruce had the hot start but teams have figured out how to pitch to him now. I’ll take Bruce for the future since he is 3 years younger than Headley.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:42 PM
Damn you, Hayden Penn. Hayden Panettiere however, quite the opposite.
I just feel bad for Cincy, cuz Volquez and Cueto are on the Kerry Wood-Mark Prior Thrill Ride.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:42 PM
Onterrio: Bruce, Bruce. Look at the park. And the people around him.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:47 PM
i’ll buy both of those guys low (waiver wire) everytime.
i’d rather not mention the bums i had on my roster that i cleared out to make room (cough borowski cough)
July 17th, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Tking those factors out, who is the better player, more talent?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:48 PM
still Bruce.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:51 PM
The Dark Knight.
Uh I mean Bruce.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:52 PM
I gotta agree with fetch on this one.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:52 PM
not to echo myself. TBL, did you see my response yet? you know about that thing we talked about.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:53 PM
Diesel—–actually dude, Homer Bailey looks dead on Christian Bale
July 17th, 2008 at 6:53 PM
oh yeah, Bruce.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:55 PM
JD straight from the bottle. I remember those days. I think it’s called Sophmore Year.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Sounds shady. Who is going to be sticking around with me tonight to help pass the time in the office?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:56 PM
i will be chiming in from time to time
July 17th, 2008 at 6:57 PM
John Denver Experience > Kerry Wood-Mark Prior Thrill Ride
July 17th, 2008 at 6:57 PM
I’ll be around a bit too.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:58 PM
I bet Volquez and Cueto told Homer to start sucking so he can get traded his labrum wouldn’t spontaneously combust in 4 years, cuz they already know they’re f’ed in the a.
July 17th, 2008 at 6:58 PM
Can’t. Gossip Girl is on.
/TBL
Diesel what do you do that you have to stay late so often?
July 17th, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Prostituion, fetch. Prostitution.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:00 PM
8 more weeks til Smallville! I am such a superman dork
July 17th, 2008 at 7:01 PM
sparty – where, in email?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:02 PM
TBL. yep sent ya a link
July 17th, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Yeah I comment on my phone while standing on the corners in Boys Town.
In reality I’m in M&A Consulting for one of the large accounting firms.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:02 PM
8 weeks is a long time to pine for a tv show.
not that I don’t like tv, it just seems too long for a countdown
July 17th, 2008 at 7:03 PM
i just saw the date for the first episode.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:04 PM
I need to buy Smallville on DVD next time Target or Best Buy have them on sale. I fell off that wagon years ago and never got back on.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:05 PM
I liked the old Smallville’s but I’m not a huge fan of the new ones. Bring on the new season of Scrubs, however.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:06 PM
hawkeye, catch yourself up. because major characters are gonna this season.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Phil Mickelson blows, yesssssssss.
And Hideo Nomo retired.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:07 PM
I’ve never seen Smallville or Scrubs, yet I probably watch more tv than anyone… just have never seen either
July 17th, 2008 at 7:07 PM
gonna be gone*
July 17th, 2008 at 7:07 PM
gonna what? Live? die? mate? clone themselves and take over the world? Be in a plane crash in the Andes and eat each other?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:07 PM
Arthur Andersen 4-EVER, dickbags!
July 17th, 2008 at 7:08 PM
Bring on the new season of Entourage. I wanna see what they so with Medillin. Starts September 7th.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:10 PM
FUCK. Rick Reilly is doing The Open? Fuck.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:10 PM
See there… that’s a show I watch… Medillin I bet will bomb, everything looked so cheesey about it.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Fair point, but I feel like Harvey is gonna turn it into a blockbuster.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:11 PM
@billy-you didn’t think they were paying him all that “ridonkulous” money to just write an 800 word column every two weeks, did you?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:12 PM
Especially since he is, at heart, a golf guy.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:13 PM
Entourage got an assload of Emmy noms today
July 17th, 2008 at 7:15 PM
/mini threadjack
Phillies just traded for Joe Blanton
/end mini threadjack
July 17th, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Good call, sparty.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:17 PM
wow, Blanton.. he is okay a #4 or 5… not been good this year
July 17th, 2008 at 7:18 PM
Weird trade for the Phils. Not a fan, but they didn’t really give up anybody significant, so it could’ve been worse.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:18 PM
one of my favorite scenes in Entourage was the first season…they went to a party in the Hills and it happened to be at Jessica Alba’s house. the place was SICK. awesome pool, great views, and i vividly remember ‘beautiful’ by Snoop playing. i downloaded the song instantly … and to this day, when i hear it, i think of that scene.
loser? you bet.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:20 PM
/Mini threadjack…again.
Paterno needs to fucking retire. Jesus.
/End threadjack. Sorry. I hate him.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:21 PM
Seeing Alba on the show the first episode made me think it was gonna be a cool show, and it has had great cameos just about every episode
July 17th, 2008 at 7:22 PM
Blanton had more value last year at the all star break when the Dodgers were interested, I bet Beane wishes he’d have pulled the trigger last year
July 17th, 2008 at 7:25 PM
Am I the only guy on the board who has never seen Entourage?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:25 PM
Gulp, Giants Season Ticket Update-PSL prices for seats in the lower bowl and mezzanine will span in price between $10,000 and $4,000. Better tell my kid he is paying for his own college.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:25 PM
anyone read any Dark Knight reviews? It seems universal that this movie rocks. im pumped about the weekend. will be moreso if my golf clubs come tomorrow. i’ll wake up saturday morning early and hit the range!
July 17th, 2008 at 7:27 PM
What sticks did you buy, TBL?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:28 PM
BillyBuck, the worst part is that JoePa will be replaced from within. They’ll sacrifice one of their own so that a bigger name isn’t “the guy following The Guy”.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:30 PM
Haha you’ll be happy to know my group started at Andersen and then moved over here after they got taken down
July 17th, 2008 at 7:37 PM
Rex, you’re exactly right. I feel bad for that guy. There’s been a lotta talk in the Philly area about them forcing him out in the near future.
And every review of The Dark Knight says it’s sick. On of my buddies who has a job in the film business was at the premier, said it was insanely good, and he’s doesn’t like all that many movies at all. T-minus 4.5 hours until I start holding in urine after drinking a Sprite bigger than my head waiting in like to walk in the theatre.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:38 PM
We were a victim of the government interfering in our sound business practices, Diesel.
Actually, I was Andersen Consulting and Accenture (where we prioritized Accenting the Future!).
July 17th, 2008 at 7:38 PM
Rolling Stone, Variety, etc. Do you need Gene Siskel to climb out his casket and slap you with his right femur to know that a movie is good?
Goddamn you went and saw Indiana Jones and Wanted without asking for a review.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:40 PM
Hawkeye – Just a cheap Slazenger set. Want to putz around for a bit before upgrading in a year or so.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:40 PM
yeah but there is nothing like being able to pee after you’ve been holding it for way too long, so you also have that to look forward to
July 17th, 2008 at 7:40 PM
BillyBuck, sources close to me…
- if no BCS game this year, he comes back for his 60th at PSU.
- if he gets a big win, he will likely be really pressed to go out on top.
either way, i’m hearing a replacement from within. i can’t disagree with that too much. replacing God ain’t easy.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:40 PM
I think TBL has been harsh on Indy 4. It was what I totally expected, just good fun for a couple hours. I did not go in with the expectations that it would surpass any of the first 3, but it was fun. It was what movies were originally suppose to do, entertain you.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:42 PM
Over/Under on the number of home runs Blanton gives up in that bandbox…15? 12 in the first half in Oakland.
Sadly I drafted him for fantasy, but wised up and dropped him a few starts into the season.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:44 PM
God Damnit Sparty..I gave you the seat licensing info on MLJ..your welcome would be nice..your fucking welcome..we are done..forget you and all the nice things I have done for you..like make fun of you and read your website..remember that…remember?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:47 PM
RWH…i read that in NY Post. check the times of the comments sneezy.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:47 PM
TBL – Always a good plan. I’m running with a set of Niklaus hybrids I bought used. I didn’t see a reason to drop $300-400 on a set of irons that I might not like.
And now I can spend more on a driver and woods.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:50 PM
how crucial is a nice bag?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:50 PM
Sparty- he hyped it up like it was the….need and adjective…..but he asks for reviews for The Dark Knight
July 17th, 2008 at 7:50 PM
RWH-btw, who hell do you think I am Irish?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:51 PM
sparty…we snuggled the other night man..remember how I nuzzled the back of your neck…you giggled then sighed..I can’t be mad at ya
July 17th, 2008 at 7:52 PM
Goes more for the style than the function. Look like a tool with a 20 year old golf bag.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:52 PM
Rex – I think your sources sound pretty damn right and logical to me.
Diesel – 15 minimum. Do the Phils really need another Brett Myers minus the wife beating?
July 17th, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Where to begin, where to begin…
Actually, TBL, just get a decent walking bag. A Ping Hoofer has always been great for me.
July 17th, 2008 at 7:58 PM
Sounds about right, Rex. One that feel comfortable to you and is not too heavy. Most I’ve seen run about $100.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Well any regular bag is not going to garner much attention and do the…but a really nice bag, clean shaven, hanging just right, symmetrical…chicks dig that and may play with them or hell suck em if you are lucky
July 17th, 2008 at 8:03 PM
RE: Drinking games, can someone please tell me what these are?
1. The alphabet game
2. Fuck you dealer
3. fuck you pyramid
4. 7/11 doubles
5. Beer die
6. The good, the bad and the ugly
7. Thumper
8. Power hour
July 17th, 2008 at 8:04 PM
I’m guessing that TBL actually is interested in an Al Czervik-style staff bag since he’ll have CRM to caddy for him.
CRM would look cool as fuck in those pants, btw.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:04 PM
Do you really not know what all of those are, SG?
July 17th, 2008 at 8:06 PM
I seriously don’t know any of those. Or, I might know them by different names. We play beer pong, flip cup, kings, up the river down the river, three man and left right center.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:08 PM
oh, and asshole. almost forgot asshole.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:08 PM
Billy..SG is 58 years old….when she was playing quarters it was called nickels
July 17th, 2008 at 8:09 PM
Well Power Hour isn’t really a game, it’s just making a mix of music where the song changes every minute for an hour, and when the song changes, you take a shot of beer. By the end of it, you’re had 4-5 beers. Doing it for two hours is straight tiring.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:09 PM
Fair point, RMW. I’m just gonna explain the easy ones cuz I don’t feel like typing that much.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:11 PM
my only beef here is that everyone plays by diff rules.
i haven’t played in awhile, but i HATED this – doubles on singles?
July 17th, 2008 at 8:12 PM
power hour sounds gay.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:13 PM
7/11 Doubles is when you have two dice, and a cup in the middle. You pass the dice around, and somebody has to roll a 7, 11, or doubles. When they do so, they pour as much beer as they want into the cup, and pick somebody to drink. As soon as they pick up the cup you start rolling the dice again, and they have to finish the cup before you roll a 7, 11, or doubles again. If you roll one of those before they finish, you can fill it up again.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:13 PM
TBL, whoever was president got to decide whether or not doubles beat singles. Some people got REALLY fired up over that rule.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:14 PM
OK, I’ve played 7/11 doubles before, but that was like our 3 man.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:14 PM
Asshole is a great game, sober or drinking.
And Pour Hour can be a good time, it’s a good thing to do while pregaming.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:16 PM
SG..I don’t even jet a jew star..come on..that was gold
July 17th, 2008 at 8:18 PM
i gotcha bro, +1js.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:19 PM
Fuck the Dealer is passing the deck of cards around, and when you get it, you have to ask three people to guess the number incorrectly in a row, say an 8. Then the dealer says higher or lower depending on the card, and the person has one more guess. If they get it wrong, you have to get 2 more people to do the same thing and the guesser has to drink the amount of seconds on the card. If they get it right, you have to drink double the amount of seconds on the card, and the amount of people you consecutively had guessing incorrectly goes to zero. Once you get 3 in a row, you pass the deck on.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:20 PM
i preferred my drinking in a dark place where no one could see me doing my best josh hamilton. these games are very foreign to me.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Sportsgal, how have you never heard of these? Are you from like the prohibition days where you had to drink in secret?
July 17th, 2008 at 8:21 PM
Damn, drinking games just sound like too much work. Whatever happened to watching a game on TV, playing video games or just talking smack while drinking??
July 17th, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Was that Giambi pic taken in the Blue Oyster Bar?
July 17th, 2008 at 8:22 PM

July 17th, 2008 at 8:24 PM
That’s enough typing. I gotta go cook dinner for my parents in a few minutes. I really could explain them all, but I don’t have the energy.
If I used the amount of space in my brain, or energy knowing all the rules to these absurd games, to do…I dunno…schoolwork, I would be graduating next year, instead of taking a year off and transferring and graduating in 3 years. Fuck.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:24 PM
Awwww yeah! Many a night was spent playing GoldenEye while drinking. At least until you couldn’t quite see the screen. Also good, NHL Hitz.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:25 PM
High GoldenEye was the tits, thank you very much.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:25 PM
we played Turok high.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:27 PM
I soooo wish that GoldenEye would come out on the Virtual Console. That would be an automatic purchase.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:28 PM

My roommates and I are on a drunken Mario Kart kick. Sportsgal talked shit and got worked.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:36 PM
That would be some work, especially with Mario Kart Wii.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:37 PM
Yeah it’s old school N64 version, though I have played Wii Kart hammered. It almost made me puke
July 17th, 2008 at 8:37 PM
Diesel- please tell me you’re talking about the 64 version.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:38 PM
Old School N64? I remember playing that shit on Super Nintendo
July 17th, 2008 at 8:38 PM
sweet job sneaking that comment in before me so I look like a jackass, Diesel
July 17th, 2008 at 8:39 PM
heh, a buddy of mine puked mid-game while playing Jedi Fighter a few years back. He just paused the the game, excused himself and blew in the bathroom. Then picked up where we left off.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:40 PM
I didn’t say they were smart games, but they are games. I mean how smart does a game have to be (or for that matter, how smart can it be after hours of drinking)?
July 17th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
Diesel, drunken Mario Kart rules. It’s made me a much better drunk driver.

July 17th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
It’s what I live to do fetch
July 17th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
Well I’d love to continue, but I must go grill. Have a good evening all, and I’ll let you know how The Dark Knight is (cuz I know you all care about my opinion of it, obviously).
July 17th, 2008 at 8:45 PM
ahhhh, 7-11 doubles
now you’re bringing the memories back!
fact: i enjoyed college so damn much, i have not been back to my campus since graduating. it might hurt too much.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:48 PM
TBL, when I return to tOSU, I cry every damn time. 95% of the High Street bars were bought and leveled by the university. They’ve been replaced with Starbucks, Crate ‘n Barrel, and the like. Makes me sick.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Guitar Hero drunk is fun. It’s even more fun when sober because you don’t have to wash the puke off the plastic guitar.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:52 PM
iggy, all Mathletes undergo rigorous alcohol and drug testing, so we know you’re sober. no need to point it out.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:54 PM
Yeah, it’s true. I know a guy that got DQ’d when he tested positive for Ritalin.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:55 PM
um, i was told by authorities to say away from East Lansing for 15 years.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:56 PM

July 17th, 2008 at 8:58 PM
Bloomington always welcomes me back with open arms. Especially the hot bartenders, they droll when the alumni come in and open tabs.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:59 PM
droll = drool
July 17th, 2008 at 9:00 PM

July 17th, 2008 at 9:01 PM

July 17th, 2008 at 9:01 PM

July 17th, 2008 at 9:03 PM
Eh?
July 17th, 2008 at 9:07 PM
TSP – There were soooooo many good ones. great to have those guys back. makes my mornings great.
July 17th, 2008 at 9:09 PM
I don’t remember Power Hour having anything specific to do with music. It was more about doing 1 shot of beer every minute for 60 minutes. Doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up and you can get drinky real fast.
I’ve also done Power Hour’s more evil cousin The Century Club, where you do a shot of beer every minute for 100 minutes.
July 17th, 2008 at 9:10 PM
i do not know many people to get to 100. they would just say fuck it, and start drinking a full bottle around 45 shots.
July 17th, 2008 at 9:12 PM
I can’t imagine drinking some of the beers I drink like that. I’d also go broke very quickly that way.
July 17th, 2008 at 9:14 PM

TBL – Also good today was the clip of the Tampa Rays announcer saying “mantra plus yantra equals tantra.” That cracked me up. Christie and Sal are money with those public access show prank calls.

I feel like you guys are all really old that you have to “remember” the days that you played these games. Its Friday, the week is almost over, I’m out early, and I’ll be heading to play many of these games until my brain shuts itself off. Just because school is over doesn’t mean you can’t play some good ole’ fashion drinking games.
By the way, Power Hour was a great way to pre-game when you didn’t have enough people to play a different game. Everyone I know had a “Power Hour Mix” which was in essence one long song that changed every minute signifying when to drink. Listening to some of the retarded songs that your friends would put on was half the fun.
