Taking Another Look at ESPN’s NFL Blog Network
Blogging, ESPN, NFL July 23rd. 2008, 6:15pm
About two weeks ago, we wondered if ESPN.com’s new-fangled ‘blog beat’ system would work, and yesterday, the .com finally rolled it out. There was a press release and everything! Let’s take a look at a few of the items, shall we?
* What they’re saying about Jason Taylor
* Morning take on quick-hit issues you likely saw on the front of ESPN.com
* A Brian Urlacher post linking to three Chicago newspaper articles
* Four newspaper articles from the boring AFC South
* Eight links to newspaper articles from the NFC West
* Finally, original thought! Four teams, four QB situations in the NFC North
* Heavy on the links in the AFC East
* The tight end situation in the AFC West
* You can tell Mosley is their most seasoned blogger, because his NFC East take has some bite to it.
* The first list appears at 2:15: Indispensable players in the NFC West.
* Favre’s phone calls
* Indispensable players in the AFC South!
* Mailbag
* Indispensable Delhomme!
* Some more originality: Bill Walker at Ravens camp. Troy Smith threw three INTs in 7-on-7. Ha!
Obviously it’s impossible to judge a blog by its first day, just as you can’t form an opinion on Rick Reilly’s column based on his first few efforts. We didn’t check every link, but it appears most of them are strictly news, it didn’t appear as if blogs were linked, and writer opinion is being kept to a minimum. Then again, it’s difficult to wield the heavy-handed opinion on Day One. We’ve heard the word “mess” being tossed around with this entire operation, so we’ll keep a close eye on it – just in case you’re not.

Isn’t this just Hashmarks on steroids?

I read Reilly’s latest column and that will be the last. He started off talking about A-rods celebrity and how bad it can get and then went off on people mistaking who he was when he went to cover events. I am pretty sure this guys head is now past the point of no return and will forever be lodged up his own ass.

Good to see they are bringing the brilliant headlines, too:
Pats’ Brady indispensable. Cassel? Not so much

@ YYSA:
What you didn’t like an article that was essentially:
Fame can take it’s toll on major athletes. Enough about them here’s how minor fame affects me?

That does pretty much sum up Reilly’s latest effort. This guy makes way too much money to generate that shit.
July 23rd, 2008 at 6:39 PM
and reilly is far worse on his golf coverage pop-ins. truly, without question, terrible stuff.

Couldn’t come up with a cooler name than ESPN NFL Blog Network? I would have gone with the Funky Squad of NFL Bloggers, but that’s just me.

Bloggy Blog and the Bloggy Bunch > Funky Squad of NFL Bloggers

Reilly is an example of why sportswriters should never become as big as the guys they cover. Money breeds complacency. And for someone who we count on for a good opinionated story, complacency is a horrible thing. I loved him at SI, but I am saddened by his last few columns.
As far as his on-air stuff, I actually liked the asterisk one.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:11 PM
I haven’t read a Reilly article or seen him much on TV since he left SI

Romo, It seems like he’s just not as into it as he used to be. Writing for a paycheck, I guess. I heard him talk in a class once over the phone, so I’m not totally surprised his on-air stuff isn’t spectacular.

Anyone else think Erin Andrews looks good tonight on ESPN Wed. Night Baseball? That black dress is doing her justice.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:30 PM
College Football Live on espn is now unwatchable. Coolest helmet brackets followed by “Sound Off” (appropriately named as it turns out) with some fat douche singing the Oklahoma fight song and then the hosts American Idol it with feedback? wtf?
What channel did CNN-SI move to?
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:35 PM
You mean it was watchable before?
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 PM
I don’t like CFL, but College Gameday is the best show on ESPN. Period.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 PM
oh no romo, you’re right. i never really spent more than a couple of minutes at a time with the show. now i just won’t.
July 23rd, 2008 at 7:45 PM
Those are words I don’t hear very often.
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:01 PM

TBL check out the front page of ESPN. They got Simmons and Reillys picture side by side. The only thing missing is a red VS. in between them
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:25 PM
@TBL: A picture of people coming together to parachute for the ESPN NFL blog beats? Please describe what made you choose this picture. My personal choices would have been:
A: Car crash
B: Jacobsen swilling the vodka like Jim’s picture
C: Something having to do with the word fail
D: Mikhail Gorbachev

who is ready for another Mets late inning collapse?
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:33 PM
DRC – Good point on the photo. I was thinking ‘go team!’ when i should have been thinking Jacobson plastered.
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:38 PM

The AFC South is boring? Three playoff teams and all four teams at .500 or above is boring? Oh yeah, none of the teams are located in the Northeast. That would be the problem, I suppose.
