Does Phillies GM Pat Gillick Ride the Metro?
Baseball August 1st. 2008, 4:15pm
A reader asks: “Was at the Nationals-Phillies game [Wednesday] night in DC (as a Phillies fan, of course) and after the big Phillies win, my buddy and I saw Pat Gillick, or what appeared to be Pat Gillick, in line, with a mass of people who had no clue who he was, trying to ride the Metro. My buddy says Ruben Amaro Jr. was with him as well. When we screamed, “HEY, Pat Gillick!” he threw his hand backward but didn’t turn around, like he was acknowledging us, but not really.”
Our discerning eyes say no, but we would like to add that the DC public transportation system is impeccably neat compared to the New York subways.

Our website is better too.
Experienced the subway this week, how people haven’t died from heat exhaustion while waiting for the train I will never know.

Did I ever tell you about the time I thought I saw Hef at Myrtle Beach? I don’t know who the guy he was with was, but they were hugging a lot.

Saw Dave Littlefield at a HS basketball game I was reffing. Was hoping he’d say ANYTHING so that I could throw the bum out on his ass.
Pgh. is currently building a $400 mil. subway tunnel under the Allegheny river toward PNC Park. Will save everyone from walking roughly 0.25 to 0.5 mile across a bridge. Your tax dollars at work (and I mean yours because it’s federally funded, not local/state).

Don’t get me started.

Josh Howard caught street racing.

I love the DC Metro. You should see the Cleveland “train.” It’s like a 100 year old set of tracks and cars that run beside a street, meaning it has to stops for red lights. It is almost faster to walk.

Did you recently die from heat exhaustion while waiting for the train, Mike?

At least Howard was smart and didn’t carry his weed with him.
Back to New York I go, talk to you guys Monday.

you can die waiting for the People Mover in Detroit, but that’s a entirely different story…

You can die at a Celine Dion concert, but that is a different story.

I thought I was going to die when I saw Andrew WK a few weeks ago. Instead I got onstage with at least 100 other people and partied my ass off.

I think the problem was the song…

NYC subway system is unfortunately the best in the nation. It runs 24 hours it spans the outer boroughs and when it is running it is fast. Boston has approximately three stops and runs until around noon, and on top of all that it’s in Boston. DC again with the closing on midnight (on the weekdays) and doesn’t go to Georgetown. Chicago’s L-train is virtually useless if you don’t live downtown. LA – ha nice joke. Sure NYC subway system is gross, grossly outdated and smells like the inside of a 300 year old homeless dude’s anus, but no other city has a more complete system.
Stop hatin

I’m just talking about the heat, Mo. It’s insane during the summer. Would it kill them to put some stand-alone fans down on the platform?

@Romo: I wish he would’ve played that song live, and I think it showed up in some installment of Guitar Hero. From the handful of ATHF episodes I’ve seen, it looks like a pretty funny show.

Georgetown is for college students, 20-something trustafarians, and tourists from Iowa who have never seen a Benetton or J. Crew. I hate the fact that Metro doesn’t go anywhere near H Street NE. Granville Moore’s is awesome, yet nearly a $10 cab ride from Union Station.
