Mark Cuban Will Pay $1.3 Billion for Lou Piniella’s Tight Pants
Baseball August 3rd. 2008, 5:08pm
I’d pay that much if it meant I could bring Harry Caray back to broadcast games pitched by CC Sabathia, but for the Cubs? That’s as many dollars as customers served at McDonald’s. Fanhouse is on it:
Cuban is reported to be the top bidder, at nearly $1.3 billion, but the auction will begin soon, after the applicants and their bankers delve further into the assets books.
“The Cubs are an amazing franchise and brand,” Cuban wrote in an e-mail message. “I think the owner of any major sports franchise has two jobs: first, it’s to work hard to win a championship year after year, and second, to be the caretaker of the franchise in the community.”
It’s obvious Cuban is going to be the top bidder, but that won’t guarantee him the team. It would be up to Bud Selig and the rest of Major League Baseball. That means NO, even though Major League Baseball is lacking poorly dressed owners, so in a way, Cuban as Cubs owner would be celebrating diversity. I’d like to see it, to be honest. Does that change your mind at all, Bud?
No?
You suck.

to be fair they may well have won in 06 if it werent for the greatest acting job this side of howard the duck.
so why would selig say no? even though i could see him saying no, i cant figure out why

mole, because he would be a disgrace to the game, that is also why he is getting rid of the NL west.
August 3rd, 2008 at 5:26 PM
how would cuban be anymore of a disgrace to the game than sieleg himself….the way bud could parlay this is…is the way cute chicks hang out with fat chicks to make themselves into hot chicks
but as a cubs fan – it would be nice to have a steinbrenner like owner…which is in essence what Cuban would be

ahhh what the fuck do i care…as a cubs fan, anyone who buys them will wanna be the chicago hero
as long as the cubs arent bought by a corporate conglomerate nd they are ownedby a passionate owner, i really could give a fuck

Chicago fans – I was always wondering if the Cubs win it this year will they still be for sale?

too lazy to look it up

i always wondered if them winning it all would diminish the value of the franchise….sounds silly until you think about whoever comes in wont get to be the hero…i guess what i am saying is if the cubs won within the last year, the purchase isnt quite as romantic…these high profile people already have accomplished a lot, if they could turn the cubs into winners – they achieve cult hero status…of course i dont give a fuck about their status, i want “next year” to be this year

vijay singh won the WGC bridgestone invitational…congrats to one of the best ball-strikers in golf history, one of the most approachable players who got a bad rep for (rightfully) blasting annika back in the day, and one of the coolest guys on the PGA tour.
mickeltits choked

Mike, I was thinking that a WS would make them (sellers) reconsider, that thier profits would be huge and they would milk it until the Cubs go into another 100 year funk?
August 3rd, 2008 at 7:23 PM
zell owns part of the white sox and is in debt with purchase of the cubs….we know newspapers as a whole are in the toilet….so…either he keeps the cubs and milks them, or sells while he can get the most…i dunno…zell is okaying everything possibel (soriano, harden, zambrano) to make it the MOST attractive…because if the Cubs dont do it this year, regardless of how you feel about them, they will be competitive for a few years…good bagaining chip if youre selling…you are getting a ready to win team

mikey, does winning up the price? I think it would up the price and I dont see Cuban backing down.
The shame is that Cuban tried to buy the Pirates a couple years back and was completely shunned.

That made me giggle.

What no hall of fame game open thread?
August 3rd, 2008 at 8:08 PM
to me…as a cubs fan
figuratively: winning diminishes the price…you no longer get to be the hero
literally : the cubs become the red sox and if you think cub fans were annoying before, wait until they win…the cubs become the hottest ticket in the country…you got to remeber what made the braves was TBS….which was available all over the country – Cubs the same way with WGN…if the Cubs win the world series, then everyones going to make the pilgramage to wrigley at some point..but they already sell out all of the time so, i dnt know how you max revenues unless you just raise prices…

Jerry Reinsdorf hates Cuban and will probably try to block it but remember Zell is beholden to other people who just took part in one of the biggest Corporate buyouts in recent years…they are going to demand every dollar and they can make Bud Selig’s life a living hell (Litigation and more litigation, plus ruining a flagship franchise) if they don’t get it. Bud’s group got bounced in the first round. That right there showed Bud will have very little to do with this process.
