Back by popular demand: a Dan LeBatard livechat. The first one was quite memorable, especially his disdain for calling golf a sport. Hey, look – it’s the PGA Championship this week! The former Miami Herald columnist has been spending most of his summer afternoons filling in for Tony Kornheiser on PTI and hosting his popular radio show. The date: Wednesday (tomorrow) August 6. na, he won’t cover it for the same reason he doesn’t cover the WGC Bridgestone and the Wachovia…i.e. the PGA is by far and away the shittiest major.

Spencer – I agree that more PGA coverage is needed. Was at the WGC at Bridgestone Sunday. Phil has so much talent but is an incredible choker. Vijah should have won by 5 strokes (if he could putt).

OUMike…totally agree. people always scoff when i say phil has more talent than any golfer, including tiger, on tour, but phil is just a headcase which is why tiger is infinitely more successful. phil shouldve played 3 wood, 7 iron, 2 putt and forced vijay to make his putt to avoid a playoff. instead…ack.
and vijay put on a clinic with his 13 clubs that weren’t his putter.

@Spencer – no doubt about it, Vijay has an incredibly sweet swing, and he should contend for the PGA, especially if he gets his belly putter figured out (I’m sure as soon as he left the course he practiced). Re Phil, he has amazing shot-making ability, but doesn’t know when to put the driver away. Maybe he would have played differently if he were in Vijay’s group, but we will never know.

@OUMike, how much of Phil never putting his driver away do you think should be put on his caddie? At some point he has to tell Phil not to hit the driver even if its not what he wants to hear.

tommy z: Maybe some, but not much. I’m guessing he may have played differently if he were in the same group as Vijay and watching Vijay putt. He is so incredibly talented and confident that I don’t know if he would listen anyways. But you could see him start to unravel after 15… pretty sad.

I think it was Jimmy Roberts said a couple years ago that Michelle Wie has the best swing in golf… but unfortunately those swings come from the drop area…ZING!!

that’s phil tho…you tell him not to do something, he’s going to do it anyways. he’s done that his whole life, which is why he golfs lefty yet does everything else with his right hand. he does his own thing, that’s never going to change.
if anything, if bones told him NOT to use driver, phil probably wouldve hit a better shot because he’d be concentrating harder because he’d be pissed.

Phil has the problems a lot of us have. He is not much straighter with his 3-wood or long irons, i.e. U.S. Open, So he winds 50 yards back in the rough.
