The Brief, Incongruous History of the Tampa Bay Bucs
NFL August 6th. 2008, 2:45pm
The Tampa Tribune seems to think Brett Favre will be joining the Bucs in the next 48 hours. We’ve already looked at whether or not the Bucs will benefit from Favre, and now, a look at the history of the team with the weakest color name (pewter?) in the NFL:
1986 – Draft Bo Jackson No. 1, but he shuns them for baseball.
1987 - Signed No. 1 pick, Heisman Trophy-winner Vinny T, traded away Steve Young.
1988 – Vinny T throws 13 TDS … and 35 picks. Commence color blind jokes.
1992 – Sam Wyche hired. Sinister look comes across the face of diabolical columnist Norman Chad.
1993 – The NFL is littered with future HOF (or fringe HOF) QBs – Elway, Moon, Esiason, Kelly, Aikman, Bledsoe – and Steve Young is leading the 49ers to glory. Craig Erickson is starting for the Bucs at QB.
1996 – Tony Dungy takes over. Franchise saved!
1998 – After taxing the hell out of residents for a few years, the new stadium goes up.
1999 - Warren Sapp-led defense takes TB to the playoffs despite Shaun King’s awful play at QB.
2000 – Pry Keyshawn from the Jets. Damn you Jets!
2001 – Playoff failures continue, so out with Dungy, in with chuckie Gruden.
2002 – Bucs bury the Raiders to win the Super Bowl. We watch some of it from an airport, deathly hungover, en route back from a wild time in San Diego. That city rocks.
2005 - Chris Simms has a horrendous playoff game and the Bucs lose at home to the Redskins.
2008 – Lose another home playoff game due to a lackluster offense, 24-14 to the Giants.

Can you do one of these on the Jets?
August 6th, 2008 at 2:47 PM
September 2008 – sets modern NFL record by fielding an opening day roster with 53 QBs.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:48 PM
Can I submit questions for Bo Jackson?
August 6th, 2008 at 2:48 PM
too depressing
August 6th, 2008 at 2:49 PM
He passed.
Working on Steve DeBerg.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Um …. what about the first 10 years. 0-14 anyone?
August 6th, 2008 at 2:50 PM
He was great on Seinfeld. Steve DeBerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg.

How can you make this list without mentioning their decision to wear orange uniforms with a swishy pirate as a logo?
August 6th, 2008 at 2:51 PM
Oh my god this post has been up forever!
August 6th, 2008 at 2:51 PM
i am afraid of pirates

Agreed, it turned the franchise around.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:52 PM
I predict they lose another home playoff game this year.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:53 PM
Fantasy question. Who would you start Tatis or Aubry Huff. Im leaning toward Tatis.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:53 PM
Steve Spurrier was the quarterback for Tampa Bay during their expansion season. I think it was 1976
Where is Doug Williams on this list?
August 6th, 2008 at 2:54 PM
2010 – Gruden loses his job after on-air fight with Phil Simms over the reluctance to release back-up QB/Pizza Delivery Guy Chris Simms.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:55 PM
tampa’s unis blow.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:55 PM
1979 – Hey hey hey! Dwayne from What’s Happenin causes his bookie to lose thousands of dollars after choosing the Bucs to win because “he liked their helmets”.
August 6th, 2008 at 2:56 PM
I still can’t believe how much they gave up for Gruden:
2002 and 2003 first- and second-round draft picks and $8 million in cash
August 6th, 2008 at 2:57 PM
They got a Super Bowl out of it, I’d say it was a good trade.

Tampa we had words today…I am still not over it..ok..I am so I suggest going Tatis…when he points to the skies after every hit..he is praising God not in subservience but as his equal
August 6th, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Where was this Tatis when he was an Oriole dammit?!?!
August 6th, 2008 at 3:01 PM
Only his BABIP knows…
August 6th, 2008 at 3:02 PM
Yah, if I was assured of winning a Super Bowl, I make that trade everytime, just pointing out how much they gambled there.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:04 PM
@Mike NYC That Onion story should be mandatory reading before anyone is allowed commenting privilages on any site.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:05 PM
They ended up trading the 2002 first rounder away (which went to NE and became Daniel Graham), and the 03′ pick was some dude named Tyler Brayton who was/is a DE
August 6th, 2008 at 3:05 PM
Thanks RWH I have Berkman and he sucks…hes benched for the season. and Im still think Full contact beirut is awful.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:06 PM
I would have went with the “Bold Move Bo” Memphis Chicks SI Cover, but it still is always cool to see Bo.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Tampa..until you play it you don’t know..it is like rugby but with less beer
August 6th, 2008 at 3:07 PM
2005 – Drafted what they thought was a Cadillac, later to find out they got a Yugo
August 6th, 2008 at 3:07 PM
Mike, just read that Onion story, very funny and it made me sad at the same time.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:08 PM
picked up Tatis when he started playing every night. i am making a late push for the playoffs.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:09 PM
Nick…Like Tatis..his BABIP is a goad like creature
Tatis has 54 hits thus far this season…34 have come on two strikes…all bow to the power of Tatis
August 6th, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Jeez Roman, you done suckin Tatis’ dick yet? Enough already.

@Tampa. Huff is about the streakiest player this side of Adam Dunn. Way too hit and miss to be in the lineup everyday.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Ark he is hitting over .300, that doesn’t seem too streaky to me.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
@nick: red jesus has been on fire this week. shitty thing is i dropped him from my fantasy team last week.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Benji, I benched him, might need to start him again.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:17 PM
Those are the exact guys you do have to play every day.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:20 PM
cbh, just looked at his stats, he’s having a pretty decent year, a lot better than what I expected.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Yea, Huff is always ballin for me. But I made the mistake of starting Berkman in Huffs spot. Berkman was up with 2 on and Im talking to my Berkman through my laptop. Is he going to get hot Ive tried to trade him but no one will take him and hes #1 on Yahoo. Ervin Santanna is pitching against Huff and Tatis has a SD pitcher and aparently he praises the lord. Im goin with Tatis.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Nick..In fantasy? I just look at the last weeks work and decide from there
August 6th, 2008 at 3:22 PM
Ark, for real, I am worried the Orioles will overpay him after this year and he will go back to sucking.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Bad idea.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Vinny T liked throwing interceptions, especially 5 against PSU in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl.
/Suck it Irish
August 6th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
Nick..I win ..it works..I am not taking a Magglio Ordonez out of the lineup to put in Endy Chavez or nothing…but I have a bunch of interchangable parts and I play the hot hand
August 6th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
That’s how I do it too. I have a set lineup, and this year I have one spot with interchangeable parts, so I got with the hot hand for that one position.
August 6th, 2008 at 3:52 PM
As if…
August 6th, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Tatis sucks.
I have pretty much a set lineup, but that’s mostly cause I’m lazy and the rest of the people in my league are retards.
