What Are Baseball Intangibles Worth?
Baseball August 8th. 2008, 5:30pm
A discussion, narrated by Intern Bill.
So the Boston Red Sox were negotiating to acquire Padres OF Brian Giles. At 37, Giles, is on the downside of his career, yet still productive. What’s most notable about this negotiation, however, is that on his blog, Padres special assistant GM Paul DePodesta said that the Padres were leaning towards keeping Giles because of the intangibles he brings to the table:
The second reason [for keeping Giles], and the more important one, is very simply that Brian is the type of player we want our young position players to emulate. It’s one thing for us or our coaches to try to explain our philosophy, but it’s quite another, and much more powerful, to have a working example… Brian also brings a number of intangibles to our team. First and foremost, Brian plays hard and plays through pain. Before banging his knee into the wall last season he had played in at least 158 games for three consecutive seasons. He wants to be on the field, and he wants to win. As many of you know, Brian is also a bit, how shall I say, irreverent in the clubhouse, [link added] which is incredibly helpful over the course of a long season… that leadership role could positively impact the Padres in 2008, 2009, and well beyond.
Amazingly [Ed. To us!], Giles rejected the deal today, reports Buster Olney.
So what are intangibles worth? Discuss.

10 years, $189 million

why is it amazing that Giles turned this down? He’s made it clear he wants to stay in SD no matter what. Its becomingly increasingly clear that Giles doesn’t care about winning a title unless its in SD.

He wasn’t going to play much for Boston if he went there, I think he would’ve gone to Tampa if Boston had passed on him

TBL just got name dropped on espn for being the first site to have the Clausen pics!

SC just got mentioned TBL. Charlie Weiss says “Let’s move on.” and Clausen is an ugly mother fucker. Looks like Chucky.

There are two types of Ballplayers..guys who play baseball and Baseball players…a guy who plays baseball just plays to make money and live a certain lifestyle..nothing wrong with it..he is productive he will help you win..a Baseball player plays to win and it drives him to a different level…Brian Giles is a guy who plays baseball…a Baseball player would have run to Boston to try and win…I know this first hand..I have Carlos Delgado on the Mets…he rejected a deal to go to LA and play for a winner a few years ago…Giles or Delgado won’t run from winning..but they won’t run to it either

or rather TBL got mentioned

You know this first hand? What the fuck does that mean? Or rather, do you know what it means to know something first hand?
Clearly not.
There is more to the move than winning and losing. I think it’s admirable that a ballplayer wouldn’t want to move to Boston and become a part of the Red Sox. There were only eight teams on the list that he could veto. If he was all about staying in San Diego as you suggest, he would have veto powers for every team, not less than a third.
Some people get satisfaction out of being traded to a frontrunner just like some fans hop on bandwagons as the season winds down. Giles isn’t going to jump bandwagons. He’s a Padre, and he wants to win as a Padre.
Commitment to a team is worth just as much or more than a commitment to a World Series ring. He’s not selling out on his teammates for a shot at glory; he’s sticking with them, thick and thin.
Kudos to him.

you can make the case Giles is hurting his team by not accepting a trade. If they trade him the Padres get prospects for this year and help build up their farm system. Not to mention they save on his salary. Giles can always come back to SD if he wants and the team wants him

USC’s Sanchez carted off with injury today at practice!

rs27 – That’s like saying you’re doing your girlfriend an injustice by staying with her when she could do better.

RiSK…if the Padres wanted him so bad they would not have put him through waivers..he hurt the Padres by not going…he obviously loves SD..who doesn’t… but a winner wants to go and win..he is not a winner he never has and never will be

I don’t know what you mean because I don’t talk to women. They scare me.
I agree with Roman on this one
August 8th, 2008 at 11:23 PM
I never said anything about the Padres wanting him. I said he wants to be a Padre. I never denied that he could be hurting SD in a round about way by staying. But he doesn’t have any obligation to help them by leaving them. What the hell do you think no trade clauses are for?
As Brett Favre learned, this is pro sports thing is a business. As Giles is teaching, that’s a knife that cut both ways.
I also never said anything about him being a winner. Sure, he’s never won a World Series, but he’s managed to reached the World Series twice and played for four other playoff teams, all while playing for Cleveland, Pittsburgh and San Diego. This is fucking baseball, a guy who spends his career with those teams can’t be a “winner” by your standards. If he wanted to sell his soul to the Red Sox he could ride the bench to the World Series.
And that would make him a winner?
Ridiculous.
By the way, in the future, if you’re going to argue with me, at least address one thing I said.

RiSK..I did address it I said he is not a Baseball Player he is a guy who plays baseball..which I said first and you got your panties in a bunch..it is my opinion..anyone who values winning would have jumped at the chance… he cared about playing time and his family..those are not bad things..he gets paid well..but would his family have been torn up if he left for 2 months to follow a dream that as a 37 year old guy may never happen for him…I am not killing Giles..I just think his priorities are not conducive with a winners priories…and it is obvious that he loves the Padres more than they love him…I would not want to play for someone who wanted me gone
