Yardwork: Red Sox and Rangers Make (tie) History
Baseball August 13th. 2008, 9:45am
Red Sox 19, Rangers 17: Kevin Youkilis hit the game-winning three run homer over the Green Monster to ensure a Sox victory instead of a severe choke-job. The Sox gave away a 10-0 first-inning lead, marking the first time since June 4, 1989 the team squandered a 10-run lead. The Rangers banged out 20 hits for the second straight game and lead MLB in batting average and runs scored. David Ortiz led all hitters with six RBI, Youkilis had five, and Ian Kinsler and Chris Davis of Texas had four apiece. Marlon Byrd went 5-for-6 and is 21 for his last 34. Christ. Speaking of Byrd, the Sox acquired Paul Byrd for cash and a game of scrabble. The 36 runs tied an American League record in a game that, shockingly, lasted less than four hours.
Blue Jays 13, Red Sox 11 – June 4th 1989: The Sox got out to a 10-0 lead heading into the 7th inning when Mike Smithson ran out of gas and gave way to Bob Stanley, who proceeded to give up four runs over the next inning and 2/3. Rob Murphy, Lee Smith and Dennis Lamp didn’t help matters, with Lamp serving up the game-winning homer to Junior Felix in the 12th inning. Ellis Burks led all hitters with five RBI while Ernie Whitt led Toronto with four. The Internet is amazing. Also, if the Sox had traded Lee Smith for Tom Brunansky in 1989 rather than 1990, they probably would have avoided the embarrassing loss. No way Bruno would let that happen.
Marlins 4, Cardinals 3: The first five Cardinals reached base and three runs scored on Ryan Ludwick’s double (87 RBI this year), but Chris Volstad settled enough to pitch five innings and the Florida bullpen gave up one hit and zero runs in four. Hanley Ramirez hit a three-run bomb in the 2nd to put Florida ahead for good.
Yankees 9, Twins 6: Xavier Nady had a homer and four RBI and has 19 homers and 74 RBI overall. With the Yankees, he’s at .344/6/17. Mike Mussina pitched well enough to win, giving up three runs in seven innings. Hank Steinbrenner has foul body odor.
Dodgers 4, Phillies 3: Casey Blake and Man-Ram combined for three RBI and Andre Ethier drove in the game-winner to get Hong-Chih Kuo his fourth win out of the bullpen. Kuo has 80 strike outs in 68 2/3 innings this year – and Manny Ramirez still doesn’t know his name.

His last special on HBO was painfully bad…it’s like he was just trying to swear as much as possible which is fine if there’s material in there too
My beloved White Sox back in first…if the Yankees and Red Sox were swapping first place every other day like the White Sox and Twins are it would leadoff SportsCenter every night

can we have a collabo Intern Bill and Wasserman piece about the fantasy impact of two-start pitching? I wanna slap some people in my league.

Rivera gave up a 3 run homer to Young in the 8th which tied the game, so Moose didn’t get the win.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:38 AM
My comments from last night.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Alex Rodriguez’s homer in the 12th broke a 6-6 tie, Mariano Rivera blew his first save of the year thanks to a Delmon Young three-run homer in the 8th, blah blah blah, yada yada yada.
