Charles Barkley For Congress? Sure, Why Not?
Politics August 14th. 2008, 10:45am
Stop laughing, it might happen! At least according to Artur Davis, a politican in Alabama:
Walking to his car, the three-term congressman, who is seriously mulling over a run for Alabama governor in 2010, speculated about a possible successor to his 7th District seat should he decide to run for the state’s highest office.
“I’ve heard Charles’ name mentioned as someone who might have an interest,” Davis said. “I know he has a home in Leeds now and he could buy a flat in Birmingham inside the district but that really doesn’t really matter. I know he’s someone who has a real interest in the state, in wanting to see it move forward.”
It seems as if Barkey’s been flirting with this idea for years. Come on, Sir Charles – shit or get off the pot. Enough with the teasing.
Barkley for Congress? Artur Davis raises that question (Birmingham News)

If I lived in Alabama I’d vote for him.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Ditto
August 14th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
If I lived in Alabama and I believed in voting, I would vote for the right to have an opportunity to vote for him.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Any celebrity who runs, I’d vote for, what they stand for and what their platform is, are irrelevant.
/sincere

This is not going to do any good for anyone. Hes just opinionated not a fucking polititian.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Well at least he has an opinion. That’s half the battle. As opposed to playing to the crowd.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Tough to say if he would win – don’t they still have poll taxes in Alabama?

I can see Gottlieb has changed his name.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I’ll reserve my opinion until I find out if he’s running as a republican or democrat.
/party wanks shouldn’t vote, even though they can
August 14th, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Jesse Ventura, Ronald Regan and Sonny Bono’s ghost would all like to have a word with Tampa Bo
August 14th, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Mike NYC – Nope, I’m a different guy. Gottlieb’s a friend of mine though.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:56 AM
I will only participate in this conversation if at least three people are called racists. Otherwise, no dice.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Jesse Ventura>Ronald Regan and Sonny Bono
Predetor was awesome and sparked Politic talk between Schwartzenager and Ventura
August 14th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
@August – Most recent quote I could find he was going to run as democrat Link
August 14th, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Didn’t he call all conservatives, “crazy Christians” or something like that?
As a conservative, I would love to see him run and embarrass himself and other faux-Keyneisan populists.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Didn’t he just become a Republican not too long ago?
August 14th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Hef reaching into the bag and pulling out a classic…
August 14th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
The proper term is “fake Christians.”
August 14th, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Anytime you scroll over a link and see “tinyurl” pop-up, you know to stay away …
August 14th, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Charles has gambling debts to pay so why not become a corrupt politician? You don’t see any Senators or representatives in the soup lines. Better yet, if you’re a democrat, Countrywide will give you VIP pricing not available to the general public.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:05 AM
The proper term is “fake Christians.€
/starts slow clap

Years ago he said he wanted to be Governer of Alabama. Then he said that he wouldn’t ever be a politician because he realized they didn’t make much money.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:06 AM
POLITICS RULEZ
August 14th, 2008 at 11:09 AM
He initially said that he wanted to run for governor, and I believe that you have to be a resident for 7 years before you can run for governor. I don’t know if the wait period is any different for Congress.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:12 AM
I know you’re kidding but there are tons of shitheads out there who actually do this. That’s why Minnesota had to suffer through 6 years of Jesse Ventura. Thanks assholes!
August 14th, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Party lines in Alabama only include Alabamicans or Auburnites. Not sure who has the majority right now.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Too tautological for my tastes.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:24 AM
@NickP, you should write punch-lines for the New Yorker
August 14th, 2008 at 11:42 AM
It’s merely a commentary on contemporary mores.

Being outspoken doesn’t make one an effective politician. Reagan had years to perfect his brand of conservatism through radio shows, writings, conventions, and union leadership. Whether you liked him or not, everyone basically knew his positions before entering office.
Barkley is an NBA analyst who occasionally shoots from the hip. I enjoy his analysis and sense of humor as much as the next person, but he is a political lightweight.
August 14th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
@David B
Well said.
August 14th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Well all of the trained and prepared leaders of Alabama haven’t done such a hot job, so why not try something different for a change?
August 14th, 2008 at 2:16 PM
Change!
August 14th, 2008 at 2:22 PM
Not so much hope though… it’s still Alabama.
