Yardwork: Griffey Ties Sosa – Not that it Matters
Baseball August 21st. 2008, 9:00am
White Sox 15, Mariners 3: The Sox hit four homers in a game (again) with Ken Griffey Jr. getting in on the action for the first time with the Whities. Pierzynski, Ramirez and Swisher also homered, with Swisher’s being the third in as many games. The Sox have hit four or more homers in a game six times this month and 10 times this season. Christ.
Angels 5, Rays 4: Garret Anderson knocked in the game-winning run in the 9th to extend his hit-streak to 23 games and F. Rodriguez notched his 48th save to move the Angels 30 games over .500. Jose Arredondo earned a blown save and the win after giving up a game-tying RBI double to Carlos Pena in the 8th. Jon Miller has wet dreams just thinking about the chance to pronounce the name “Jose Arredondo”.
Twins 3, A’s 1: The A’s made history with their 11th straight series loss, an Oakland record (YAY for Oakland!). On the flipside, the Twins won their 11th consecutive home series, improving to 30-9 since June 1st. Francisco Liriano gave up five hits and three walks in five innings to improve to 4-3. Interestingly, a “scout” in Jayson Stark’s Rumblings column claims Liriano is a No. 3 or No. 4 starter and not as “wow-good” as he was prior to the surgery. I can’t speak to Liriano’s performances other than box-scores, but since being recalled, he’s yielded four runs in 23 2/3 innings. Stark’s column also included 10 snappy puns, including but not limited to: “Rays-ing the stakes” (Rays), “Fresh Eyre” (Scott Eyre), “Dunn Deal” (Adam Dunn) and “Danks a Million” (John Danks). Awesome.
Brewers 5, Astros 2: Manny Parra won his first game in a month after losing four of five starts with a 5.70 ERA in that span. Houston loaded the bases with no outs in the 8th but E. Gagne got Hunter Pence to ground into a double play and David Newhan followed suit with a groundout. Salomon Torres earned save 24 in his 29th opportunity. Dude has been in the league since ‘93 and didn’t even pitch this well in Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball.
Mets 6, Braves 3: Mike Pelfrey pitched the first complete game of his career, giving up three hits, three runs and three walks while striking out three. His jersey number? You guessed it: 34.

This is really shaping up to be an exciting finish for the AL playoffs. If the Sawx and Yanks miss the playoffs, I will be a very happy man.

Garrett Anderson knocked in the game-winning run in the 9th to extend his hit-streak to 23 games
good thing the Angels asked the official scorer to review that. It was initially ruled an error on Aki

NICE! I was totally going for that too and I am glad you called me on it.

The Twins are an exciting team to watch; oldest person in their starting rotation is 26. Hopefully their upcoming series against the Angels will get some national broadcast attention.
I’m glad the Red Sox don’t have to play the Twins again in the regular season.

That HR was Griffey’s first extra base hit with the White Sox.
Ditto on the Sawx and Yanks, btw.

come on, doesn’t anyone have at least an inkling of hope of a Dodgers/Red Sox series. Manny going up against his former team?

Griffey’s been pretty brutal to watch in the outfield. He has little to no pop in his bat. I still think it was a good trade because the Sox got more back in the trade, but you’re still trading nothing for slightly above average.

Dodgers/Red Sox World Series would be awesome… It’d be the 2004 Red Sox vs. the 2008 Red Sox.

The Angels are the best team in baseball and I expect them to make it to the Series. Who makes it from the NL? I would like to see the Brewers, but I don’t think that’ll happen.
Breaking News – Gene Upshaw is dead.
August 21st, 2008 at 9:30 AM
Does anyone here have faith in the Cubs, or are we all expecting another postseason meltdown for them?
August 21st, 2008 at 9:31 AM
It’s only breaking to you, Chris. We’ve knows about it for about 90 minutes

The Twins are an exciting team to watch;
You must watch the Twins when you are on break from Matlock.

Impending disaster from yesterday. MLB and umpires agree on instant replay for this year.

This has the potential of seriously screwing up the 2008 post season.

@Lance: 100 years thinks the choke is envitable, but shit they have win one at some point…
/starts snickering

The Angels are the best team in the AL right now, but I mean how many times have we seen the “best team” get into the playoffs and just choke? The Twins start a four game series with them tonight, and I would be happy if they just split the series.
My WS predictions are Cubs/Angels.
August 21st, 2008 at 9:44 AM
The Cubs will choke, everyone will laugh.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Griffey hasn’t been slightly above average since 2005.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:40 AM
I still don’t get the Griffey trade. Maybe the Pale Hose were just trying to break Konerko out of his funk.
I hate to say it, but a White Sox/Cubs WS would be fun to watch. I’m not a fan of either team, but Chicago would be going nuts.
