Sizing Up the College Football Weekend
College Football September 4th. 2008, 1:45pm
Lee Diekemper, briefly, on this weekend’s slate of games, which feature no ranked-on-ranked action.
No. 8 West Virginia @ East Carolina, ESPN, 4:30 p.m.
How much of a fluke was the East Carolina win over Virginia Tech last week? If ECU pulls off another upset, it goes to the front of the line (that includes Utah, BYU and Fresno State) as top BCS busters. The “winning” coach may receive a hug from a sweaty Holly Rowe.
Oregon State @ No. 19 Penn State, ABC* 3:30 p.m.
Following the weed incident this week, JoePa was heard muttering something about Eliot Ness, the always dangerous “Website Mob” and John Cappelletti. After watching Penn State dismantle Coastal Carolina on The Big Ten Network, it’s almost heresy to suggest that Penn State’s weakest defensive link are the linebackers. Oregon State gave a game away to Stanford last week. Let’s hope JoePa doesn’t take a swipe at Stacey Dales like he did two years ago to Bonnie Bernstein and an ESPN cameraman at halftime.
Mississippi @ No. 20 Wake Forest, ABC* 3:30 p.m.
Some analysts projected Wake – not Clemson – as the top ACC team. A lot of so-called experts are jocking Mississippi this season with Houston Nutt. Could this be the ACC-SEC showdown people expected from Alabama-Clemson? No word if Nutt will miss pregame warmups feverishly texting female news anchors.
Cincinnati @ No. 4 Oklahoma, ABC* 3:30 p.m.
The Big East may not be such a beast. If it is, a convincing win over a middle-of-the-pack Cincinnati team would look good for the Sooners. No matter the outcome, expect Bob Stoops to cry about something … the shade of green on the field perhaps?
Stanford @ No. 14 Arizona State, FSN 10 p.m.
Stanford could become last year’s Arizona State by beating this year’s Arizona State. Already with a win to open the season over Oregon State, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh has a chance to upstage his brother, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh.
* – Games not broadcast locally on ABC affiliates will be available on Gameplan.
(All times Eastern)

September 4th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Big game for my Commies tonight on the mother station…
September 4th, 2008 at 1:53 PM
@Sean Jean- im pumped. Marve is making his first career start. Harris will play as well. this game will feature the last 3 MR Football’s in Florida, all QB’s that took their team to the state titles(Tebow-05, Marve-06, Harris-07)
September 4th, 2008 at 1:53 PM
PSU’s running game will get it done in the rain (Hanna).
/remember to take poncho
September 4th, 2008 at 1:55 PM
@August – what time tonight?
September 4th, 2008 at 1:55 PM
Nice irish. Yeah I think it’ll be interesting. I fully expect UF to win, but who knows. It’s not like the talent won’t be pretty even.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:56 PM
South Cackolacki is the king of Thursday night Football.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:56 PM

September 4th, 2008 at 1:57 PM

September 4th, 2008 at 1:57 PM
For those of you with no rooting interest in either game, would you typically watch the NFL or NCAA game?
I’ll likely flip between with NFL getting preference
September 4th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
South Cackolacki > Commodes > Bammer > Gaytors …
/nicknames from other team’s fans
September 4th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
I think the Ole Miss – Wake game could be one of the better games this week–which says a lot about the slate as a whole. I also would like to see Marve play for the U…that guy was a hell of a recruit by all accounts.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Irish, by the second quarter of that game you won’t be excited anymore.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:59 PM
NCAA if it’s BCS schools
September 4th, 2008 at 1:59 PM
San Diego State @ Notre Dame, 230 ET on NBC
September 4th, 2008 at 2:00 PM
I would watch the college game more than likely. After watching countless horrible NFL games I enter this season filled with trepidation.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
college > NFL
always.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
damnit cbh. dont ruin my hopes and dreams
@parrish- I have been waiting for a year to see Marve play. I cant wait
September 4th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
I only hope for one thing and one thing only from the remainder of the season. A Big Ten Cha… naaaa how about another 5 star recruit…
September 4th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
I don’t know if anyone has noticed but the Big 12 slate of games this week is embarrassing. I think OU playing Cinci is hands down the stiffest competition.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:03 PM
@Roethlishotdog – Personally I prefer the college game unless the (Chicago) Bears are playing.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:04 PM
Upset alert, no Beanie Wells, does that mean the Frank Solich led Ohio Bobcats shock the world?

September 4th, 2008 at 2:04 PM
If I have no rooting interest in any team I am watching the NFL, only due to FF purposes.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:04 PM
NFL over college anytime and twice on Sundays.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:06 PM
no.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:07 PM
I guess I should have put /sincere
September 4th, 2008 at 2:07 PM
Rudy Carpeneter is going to throw for 400 and 3 TD’s. Book it.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Why is Corso dressed like a shuttlecock?
September 4th, 2008 at 2:08 PM
cBH- That is retarded.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Damn I hope Wake is for real and destroys ole piss. The stroking of the textmaster for putting up 41 points on Memphis is pretty tiresome.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Sarcasm get’s past many of you.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:10 PM
well you are a Notre Dame fan.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:10 PM
I thought is was satire, not sarcasm. my bad.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:11 PM
There’s way more innovation in NCAA football than in the NFL, which makes it more fun for me to watch. In the NFL you don’t do as much to compensate for a weaker player with strategy – you just cut him and buy another player.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Not happening on Rudy Carpenter’s watch. 22-28 388 yards in a little over a half last week. And it may hit 110 on Saturday, good luck with that Cardinal.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:13 PM
I guess all of you like watching far less talented people play a game.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:13 PM
Let’s go Chippewas!!! They face Georgia this weekend. *sniff
September 4th, 2008 at 2:14 PM
well you are a Notre Dame fan.
Well you hit a chick with your car.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:14 PM
I feel you xv43 games like Boise vs. Oaklahoma are fucking great, but the NFL filters most of the crap players and there is always the great fantasy factor. I have to go with the NFL.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:16 PM
well you are a Notre Dame fan.
Well you hit a chick with your car.
I cant believe you remember that. What you dont remember was the 2 40s of Ole E that I drank prior to that and she wasnt hot.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:16 PM
I like watching far less talented people win a game with a third string quarterback.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:16 PM
cbh, college football is much more pure. I mean, they are college students playing a game, not businessmen going to work.
/sincere
September 4th, 2008 at 2:17 PM
The U’s D looked good last week. Bill Young, their D-coordinator,is going to do good things with that Miami defense, maybe just not this week.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:17 PM
not me.
/still pissed
September 4th, 2008 at 2:18 PM
I like watching college more than the NFL. Don’t know why, just do. Watching the Kansas-Louisiana Tech game on Saturday might put me to sleep though.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:23 PM
I do prefer NCAA basketball to the NBA. Of course, the NBA has the more talented players, but at least the college guys try every single game.
In the NFL, you have no choice but to try every game, if you don’t want to get killed.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:24 PM
fetch, get drunk, watch the first half, then go to the bars. It’ll be just like you’re seeing it in person.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:25 PM
If I could go to the bar I would triston. Sadly that’s a few months away.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:25 PM
Fetch -
It shouldn’t. KU may let the offense loose and Tech is going to be pretty good, just not Satuday hopefully. Last week’s game was boring. Mangino kept the offense locked up.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:27 PM
@fetch: I don’t know about LA Tech. How good was the Miss. St. team they beat last week? Our line should have dominated last week, and that scares me. We also did not even try to throw the ball downfield and committed two turnovers. I’m stickin’ with 6-6 for the Hawks this year, but I’m open for surprises.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:27 PM
college>>nfl. Any day of the week.
/paying $35 to watch Arkansas v. Lousianna-Monroe on PPV this weekend.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:28 PM
LA Tech didn’t really look very good when I watched them play last Saturday. Granted I saw none of the Kansas game so I don’t know how they played. I think it will be a blowout personally.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:31 PM
All four KU dudes in a row. That’s pretty cool. My family sits on the 1st or 2nd row of the second deck at the 50 yard line on the East side/student section of the stadium. My dad is a walking mini-liquor store if you need refreshments during the game.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:33 PM
Ark, will the Razorbacks need two late TD’s to beat a crappy team again this week?
September 4th, 2008 at 2:34 PM
I enjoy watching both college and NFL, but a couple of years ago I went to the Washington-Ohio State game on Saturday night and the next day went to Browns-Indianapolis game and the contrast was striking.
The NFL game > College Football game
September 4th, 2008 at 2:37 PM
cbh, yeah, that shit was pretty bad. Check that, real bad. I think a lot of it was getting used to the new system and a lot of freshman getting reps, but still unexcusable. This year is going to be rough but I like what I saw out of the new offense, and it was nice to see a team make halftime adjustments.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Nutt > Petrino
September 4th, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Ark, it could be worse, you could be a Texas A & M fan.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:48 PM
clown, you’ll be thinking that a week from Saturday.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:54 PM
unless i have a rooting interest, i’ll watch college.
September 4th, 2008 at 3:12 PM
College
Cocks 38
Vandy 6
September 4th, 2008 at 3:15 PM
NFL > College (Except PSU)
I might check the college game during commercials tonight, but come on, its time for the N Fuckin L.
September 4th, 2008 at 7:06 PM
BCS Conferences > NFL > Smaller Conferences
