The Solution: Virginia Tech Must Hire Chris Beatty
College Football September 4th. 2008, 12:15pm
Talked with a friend last night, lamenting the Hokies’ somewhat embarrassing 27-22 season-opening loss to East Carolina. The team’s issues are mainly with its prehistoric offense, which is what has held back Beamer’s bunch (one bowl win in the last five seasons) from the lofty perch the incredible Mike Vick raised the school to nearly a decade (!) ago.
The solution, sayeth the friend, who happens to be a longtime VT observer: Hire West Virginia running backs coach Chris Beatty. The argument for Beatty: [Ed. We mean to run the offense, not in place of Beamer, in case that wasn't clear.]
- Success offensively coaching high school in Florida (coached UF star Percy Harvin) and Virginia
- He’s already challenging VT and UVA for the top recruits in the State of Virginia (including the top-ranked QB in the state, a star who attended a high school that notoriously sends its best players to Blacksburg)
- Schools from the ACC and Big 10 reportedly have already shown interest in Beattie
- He’s only making $125k a year, and VT could easily double that salary

I’m guessing that should read “one bowl win in five seasons”

(one bowl in the last five seasons)
I am guessing you left out the word win?
Your friend is crazy if he thinks Beamer is getting fired, he made that program nationally recognized. Yes Mike Vick played a huge part but Beamer got him to go there. Beamer has that job for as long as he wants it.

Oh and the Huskers are stomping Tech when they come to Lincoln.

He’s only making 125K. Poor bastard.

Haven’t heard from Matt in a while, he must be at the RNC, or maybe his house got foreclosed and he is homeless.

One loss and fire the coach that built the program? Tech was good and on it’s way up before Vick. Tom Osborne had a horrible bowl record prior to ripping off one of the greatest multi-year runs in college football history.

obviously to coach the offense, man
September 4th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Multiple people didn’t find it obvious.

With Pterodactyls and Brontosaurus’?
September 4th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
frank beamer…sounds familiar…he doesn’t like special teams a lot does he?
September 4th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I don’t know, he looks pretty ‘giddy’ in that pick in west virginia

“Multiple people didn’t find it obvious.” cbh
I didn’t! Of course, I’m an idiot. A thousand apologies.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
As am I KC Resident, but I apologize to no one!

Not a threadjack, just worth noting– Daunte Culpepper announced his retirement, along with a pretty eloquent parting shot at the NFL.
You may now return to your sniping.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
That isn’t a solution. It’s a shot in the dark.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Broseph, link? I would like to see his parting shot.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
or maybe his house got foreclosed and he is homeless.
+1 cbh. Not that I’m wishing that on anyone not named Donald Trump, it’s just a hilarious thought…

From ESPN. He doesn’t kill the NFL or anything, but just says that he’s getting screwed for deciding to represent himself.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Me as well.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
As a VT Grad I would welcome an good offense that does not require a dual threat dog fighting QB.
Or his little brother that stomps on people.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Not bad Daunte. Pretty eloquent and interesting indeed.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Culpepper to Moss was a thing of beauty for a few years.
I don’t think he should expect anything more than to be a backup at this stage of his career, but can’t hate on the guy for deciding to get out.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
I call bullshit on Culpepper feeling that he’s blacklisted because he represents himself. The Steelers offered him one year deal as a backup, but he turned it down because he wanted to compete for the starting job. Uhh, FAIL.

I was going to say what Dirty said.

I am all for new blood being injected into the offensive brain trust. However, this will never happen, but I hope I am wrong. Beamer has far too much loyalty to his assistant coaches and coordinators. The only position I can see Beatty accepting is offensive coordinator and Beamer isn’t going to fire Bryan Stinespring. Beamer is of the mentality that he can win a MNC with his coaches and players from Virginia.
For as much bitching that I have done on collegegameballs about Sean Glennon the root of our offensive problems is Bryan Stinespring. He calls the plays. Except for the 2004 ACC Championship team watching our offense has been torturous. I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Bud Foster have a 10 foot buffer zone between each other during meetings. Every year we just piss away Foster’s tremendous defenses. I can now only hope that Tyrod can do what Randall did and make up for our lack of offensive genius and carry the team on his back.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Sweet merciful crap, I hate the Hokies.
September 4th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Yes, as a matter of fact, he does. Frankie actually invented special teams. Before he came along, there was no kicking or punting in the game, just turnovers on downs, coin flips, and seven point TDs.
All hail, Lord Beamer!
September 4th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Better idea: UVa hire Beatty
fuck VaTek
September 4th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
As a longtime UVA fan, I can tell you that challenging the Hoos for recruits is like taking candy from a baby. Chris Long will be the last big recruit that Al Groh will ever get; take that to the bank.
September 4th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Oh, and as long as Beamer keeps that Tidewater/Hampton Roads pipeline open, his offensive scheme will continue to slog through the mud.
