Another Stinker to Open the NFL Season
NFL September 5th. 2008, 9:00am
Remember the egg the Saints laid last year to open the season in Indy? Eerily similar to the Redskins performance in the Swamp last night. The banged-up ‘Skins couldn’t tackle Brandon Jacobs (LaRon Landry got absolutely trucked, as seen here), cover Plaxico (10-133 yards), or run new coach Jim Zorn’s West Coast offense. If the knock on Zorn this summer was that he’d never before called an offensive play, it sure looked like a legit concern last night.
The 16-7 Giants victory was a snoozer, and if not for much ineptness on the part of Eli Manning after the first quarter, this one would have been a massacre, along the lines of Eleventy Billion to 7. No doom and gloom predictions here about the Skins – there’s plenty of time to work out the offensive kinks before meek defenses like New Orleans and Arizona come to town.
We lost, I’m angry, etc (Hogs Heaven)

As a Cowboys fan, I was very pleased by the performance of both teams.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:06 AM
The Redskins offense looked horrible last night. I thought this was the same system that Jason Campbell used in his undefeated season at Auburn.
I was disappointed Portis didnt score or have 100+ yds for ff reasons
Kenny Phillips(The U) looked good for the Giants

Its early in the season, happens every year. Even with camps/preseason it takes a few weeks for offenses to get into a rhythm. I’ve got tix for Saints/Skins next weekend, so hopefully they look better.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:10 AM
Missed the game because of that lab, but it’s good to hear that I didn’t miss much. Plaxico got me 13 fantasy points, but Jacobs gave my opponent 11.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:12 AM
Portis could have done really well if Campbell could throw the ball more than 4 yards and loosen up the defense.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:14 AM
The Redskins 2 minute offense looked like they were just trying to set up field position for the 5th quarter.
/What’s a time out?

Another nail in the NFL’s coffin.
NBA all the way. Never a dull moment.

NBA all the way. Never a dull moment
40 days until the regular season starts
September 5th, 2008 at 9:17 AM
Shouldn’t they have kicked the field goal in the fourth quarter like old John Madden said? I realize they needed both a FG and a TD, but uhhh… points on the board are points on the board.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:18 AM
If you run a “West Coast Offense”, does that mean you’re incapable of throwing the ball more than 5 yards downfield? Even on a 4th and 13?
September 5th, 2008 at 9:21 AM
I dont know if Campbell sucks or the offense sucks. Either way put in Colt Brennen he can make it happen.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:21 AM
that’s what it seems like these days.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:23 AM
I hate the West Coast offense. They’ve had it in Philly forever (since Ray Rhodes brought in Jon Gruden to run it) and there is always some such excuse about how it takes so long to install and how hard it is to bring young players up to speed on it,etc., etc..
I guess once it’s in, and you’re QB and WR are confident in it, it’s wonderful, but until you get to that point…you get tentative offensive performances like you got last night from the Redskins.
By the way; after the Giants got that early game momentum from Strahan and the Super Bowl trophy being on the field, the Giants looked VERY ordinary.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:25 AM
@Coop – I’ll be at that Saints/Skins game on the 14th as well
September 5th, 2008 at 9:26 AM
You 2 run slants, you run a 7 yard out and you wait in the flat for a dump off pass.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:27 AM
The giants offense looked a little tired as the game wore on, WRs were not in spots and did not seem as fast. Its to be expected in the first game when they were one the fiedl so much in the first half. I thought I saw a bunch of players sucking in oxygen from the sidelines.
Run game was solid and that is a much better sign of long term sucess on the season.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:27 AM
Shouldn’t they have kicked the field goal in the fourth quarter like old John Madden said? I realize they needed both a FG and a TD, but uhhh… points on the board are points on the board.
But the FG doesn’t give the Skins a cover job.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:28 AM
Would it have been a tragedy for Plaxico to get into the end zone? My fantasy numbers would have been ridiculous.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:32 AM
Fucking Skins. All they had to do was go down the field and score with 6 minutes to go to cover the 4.5…Fuckers.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:36 AM
i thought they had NEAR TD catches in the final 90 seconds. so pissed.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:38 AM
@TBL
Ha yea, they had at least two catchable balls dropped in the endzone in the 4th Q. Ha!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:39 AM
the plays aren’t the hard part, the hard part is remembering the name…a simple double slant play will be called “44 right left quick double out tiger woods bite a hooker.”
September 5th, 2008 at 9:39 AM
Ha yea, they had at least two catchable balls dropped in the endzone in the 4th Q. Ha!
The Thrash ball was very catchable, the Moss ball was well defended.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:41 AM
Jason Campbell is not an NFL quality starting quarterback. SImple as that.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:45 AM
It’s questionable whether Thrash would have even come down in bounds, anyway.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:48 AM
To be fair to Jason Campbell’s version of a 2 minute offense, they don’t have set plays that they call in the huddle. They do it pick-up game style where he tells each receiver what to do by pointing to his shirt.
“Alright Santana, you take 5 steps and turn around. Cooley, you block the big guy on the left. Antwaan, go deep. Clinton? I want you to stay back with me and be ready for a pitch. Alright guys, let’s do it.”
I could have sworn I heard someone yell “PUNT NO TELL” late in the 4th quarter too.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:54 AM
fixed it for you. reading that first sentence stuck me the same as if i was told i was being audited by the IRS.
last night was a perfect example why college football has become more fun to watch than the nfl. fans had two choices: a plodding nfl game sans any suspence after the first few minutes, and a college game that had a couple of lead changes and momentum swings with the game in doubt until the final minute.
the nfl game last night made mccain seem exciting by comparison.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Tampa Bo, don’t start with that Brennan junk, he is nowhere near ready to play.
Redskins fans want them to cut their losses with Campbell after one game in a new system. They want to cut their losses on a guy the team gave up 3 or 4 picks for. Campbell has never played a full season, the Giants patience with Eli paid off. Not saying Campbell will win a Super Bowl anytime soon but man Redskins fans are retarded.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:00 AM
What’s Jason Campbell on, his 300th offensive coordinator in the past 6 years including Auburn?
September 5th, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Chad just legally changed his last name to Ocho Cinco. lol.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Yep, it’s going to be on the back of his jersey starting Sunday, I don’t like Chad much but this is hilarious.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Judging the NFL as a whole by that game last night is hardly fair.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Did anyone see that block Portis put on a Giants D Lineman? Knocked him straight on his ass.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Yes, they changed it to Ocho Cinco on Yahoo, tremendous.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Brandon Jacobs looked awesome last night. If he keeps taking on every tackler like he did last night, then I don’t think he is going to make it through the season.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:16 AM
Give Campbell a little more time, please.
/called him the 2nd best QB in the conference
First half was good, second half, not so much. Jacobs is an animal, though.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Judging the NFL as a whole by that game last night is hardly fair.
But that’s just the sort of instant analysis we’ve come to know and love from TBL.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Did anyone see that block Portis put on a Giants D Lineman? Knocked him straight on his ass.
Portis always blocks extremely well. I don’t want to call him underrated, but if he had stayed in Denver he would have had amazing years (and better fantasy value). He’s a flashy running back that can/could take it to the house, catch out of the backfield and throw great blocks (remember the tackle he made in the pre-season when he hurt his shoulder?). I noticed a few stretch plays and cut backs that might allow him to put up big fantasy numbers this year, as opposed to pounding it up the middle with Gibbs, assuming the Skins learn to move the ball in the air a little.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I thought it was the 2nd best QB in the division Mike? Don’t make yourself look worse, haha.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Ha, that’s what I meant. Rough start to the morning over here.
Aren’t you a ‘Skins fan? Gotta give that offense a little time to get its shit together.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:27 AM
I agree Mike, read what I wrote above, fans are already saying cut, trade Campbell, it is ridiculous.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:30 AM
cbh – you should know that’s the nature of most Skins’ fans, overreact to everything good or bad.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Can I ask of the Campbell backers what it is that he has ever done that makes you think he is a good NFL quarterback? I am not a skins fan myself, but I have watched him a number fo times through the years and he doesn’t seem, to the eye, to be vey good at reading defenses or making decisions. In addtiion, his numbers seem to bear that out. It just seems like the default with him is that he is good and there are things that have prevented that from shining through when he hasn’t actually shown any reason to hold that opinion other than inertia.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:45 AM
This is why NFC games just shouldn’t be on television at all. They’re the Big Ten of the NFL.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Maxwell, he has started 19 games in his career. 19 GAMES.
Playing QB in the NFL is not easy, he hasn’t shown greatness but as I said above other QB’s, Steve Young, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, took years before they became good.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:48 AM
I know ill, but it still annoys me to no end.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:06 AM
Except you know…They win the national championship
September 5th, 2008 at 11:07 AM
If Jason Campbell ever gets cut, he’ll stick on as one of those great backups that move around the league forever. He’s had to learn a new offensive system almost every year he’s played QB since he was in high school. If he doesn’t make it as a starter, he’ll definitely be able to be one of those veteran guys who can step in.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:07 AM
Just like Ohio State… win something once and all the sudden you think you’re actually worth something!
September 5th, 2008 at 11:15 AM
The NFC dominated for 2 decades and then the AFC has dominated the last decade but it looks like it is trending back to the NFC now.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:15 AM
OSU won a national title in the last 6 years? I thought only the SEC and USC won titles.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I should have watched this instead of my shitcocks last night. At least the Giants kno whow to hold on to a lead.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
The SEC, USC (and Texas) won their titles. OSU was given one.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
The game didn’t end on that pentalty. Miami had four cracks from inside the five, and couldn’t get in. People forget this.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:26 AM
OSU stole that title.

September 5th, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I am not allowed to criticize the performance of Your Super Bowl Champion New York Giants this year but if I could I would agree that there are some troublesome things to take out of last nights game. But take the win, regular season dominance only gets you the chance to win it all, not the right. Giants should be 3-0 into the bye with the Rams and Bengals coming up.
September 5th, 2008 at 12:25 PM
I don’t want to be in bad taste or anything but was I the only one who thought the Gene Upshaw memorial patches were way too big and gaudy?
September 5th, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Should have gone with Upshaw over GU, or just Gene.
September 5th, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Or a 63 sticker on the backs of all helmets, like Sean Taylor’s 21 last year.
September 5th, 2008 at 12:58 PM
no place like first place…
