Yahoo: Tom Brady Out For the Season
NFL September 7th. 2008, 7:33pm
[UPDATE:] This just in from Mike Silver at Yahoo: Tom Brady’s got an ACL tear and he’s done for the season. New England’s Monday morning acquisition: Daunte Culpepper, just so he can throw bombs to Randy Moss again. And no, the hit on Brady wasn’t dirty.
[UPDATE II:] It’s Imig here. I say Belichick goes after Vinny Testaverde, but Culpepper would have more intrigue.
[UPDATE III:] NBC Sports hears from the Jets players that Brady’s injury is ACL-related, too.
[UPDATE IV:] Al Michaels just said that “we” hear Chris Simms is going to New England tonight for a physical. Think “we” is Peter King?
Well that was a hell of a way to end Sunday’s action. With :02 seconds remaining, Jake Delohmme found Dante Rosario towards the back of the end zone to stun San Diego with a 26-24 victory. Normally Delhomme runs around like he has firey ants in his pants after completing a six yard swing pass, but today’s celebration was necessary.
As for the Patriots, “everyone” is saying Tom Brady’s injury is serious, likely out for the season. The Jets seem to think so anyway. The boys from ESPN are reporting a ’serious’ injury as well.
It’s like a funeral on NFL Primetime. — Or whatever the hell that show is now called.

If Brady = funeral on Primetime, what would a favre injury be? the apocalypse?
September 7th, 2008 at 7:44 PM
Funny thing about Favre, this open the door for the Jets to take the division. Who would’ve thought? Though Buffalo looked real good today.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:51 PM
Fuck.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:52 PM
peter king couches it: “Threatens the risk of his season.”
September 7th, 2008 at 7:53 PM
Say hello to Chris Simms, everybody. Yippee.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Cassell will be fine. Moss will make him a pro-bowler.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Christ. I didn’t even draft another QB… That’s what I get for dealing with the devil for 2 years in a row. The Pats and Belichick deserve this. I guess I do too since I won with him last year…
September 7th, 2008 at 7:56 PM
They have pro-bowlers in the NBA?
September 7th, 2008 at 7:56 PM
Is it wrong as a colts fan to smirk at this?
September 7th, 2008 at 7:56 PM
They have pro-bowlers in the NBA?
September 7th, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Peter King said that the NFL needs Tom Brady. This might be my homerism talking, but in no way do I see this as one of his patented overstatements.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:57 PM
However the fuck you spell his name.
I’m enjoying this, though. Can’t wait to read Simmons’ next piece.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:59 PM
/Fixed
September 7th, 2008 at 7:59 PM
i’m throwing a “down goes brady party” if anyone’s interested.
butlerboy, did you ever get that league up and running?
September 7th, 2008 at 8:00 PM
How in the hell Mike Silver get this information? Right, the most secretive team in the league when it comes to injuries lets this out 4 hours after the game. Has he even had an MRI yet?
September 7th, 2008 at 8:01 PM
Actually, what I really can’t wait for is Easterbrook’s TMQ column. Can’t imagine what the Football Gods would say about this…
September 7th, 2008 at 8:02 PM
People read Easterbrooks?
September 7th, 2008 at 8:02 PM
King is usually on point about stuff like this.
MRI or not, the injury looks bad just from watching it.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:03 PM
Haha and yeah Easterbrook is going to have a field day with this one.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:04 PM
I read it last year because I loved how he pretty much railed on the Pats any time he could, and it was highly entertaining (and simultaneously very delusional as well).
September 7th, 2008 at 8:07 PM
When does Mortenson claim this as his own scoop?
September 7th, 2008 at 8:07 PM
What the fuck is this Hole in the Wall show? And why am I even watching it right now?
September 7th, 2008 at 8:08 PM
why does the NFL need Tom Brady? Who else does the league “need”
September 7th, 2008 at 8:08 PM
No way is he that ballsy. It would behoove ESPN to once in a while give credit where credit is due.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:10 PM
oconnodv: ESPN is now claiming this as Trent Dilfer’s scoop.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:11 PM
I seem to recall the NFL being in business far before Tom Brady being born, actually.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Mort and Clayton are probably fighting over it right now. Yesterday Adam Schefter (NFL Network) reported on DJ Williams’s new contract, and all I saw on the bottom line was “ESPN The Bloated Global Brand of Suck Writer John Clayton reports that the Broncos DJ Williams signs new contract”
September 7th, 2008 at 8:13 PM
Well, there goes my team’s chances.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:15 PM
more Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, he is great in those Double Stuff commercials.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:15 PM
TBL – I agreed under the guise of my homerism. King claimed “league sources” he spoke to believed the league needed him to be playing. He was the MVP last year. It would be like Kobe having a season ending injury in the first half of the Laker’s home opener. The league needs stars like him, Manning, Tomlinson, etc so they can have a mass appeal outside of sports fans. The NFL won’t be hurt as a league by this, but it won’t show up in US Weekly as often.
SM2325 – Giving credit where credit is due hasn’t stopped ESPN before.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:17 PM
I read easterbrook…he’s clearly smarter than every other writer at ESPN combined, even if he does tend to let hyperbole get the best of him. Columns are the perfect size for me to read at breakfast on wednesdays.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:18 PM
Wow, thats freakin huge. I usually like to see the best guys on the field, but I can’t help but be very happy about this. Fuck him, fuck them, this is what you get for running up the score last year. Karma is a bitch.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:19 PM
ESPN can claim that Mort or Clayton are reporting the scoops because they are. but they’re not reporting it first. they still run commercials on ESPN Radio that Mort is reporting that Favre is retiring while we all know it was Jay Glazer.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:19 PM
@oconnodv –
Just once, I would love to see something (anything) from ESPN actually acknowledging that someone else broke the story first. How much do you want to bet that we hear something from SVP on radio tomorrow actually giving props to the people that broke the story? Sometimes he seems like one of the only guys there that checks out other sources for info.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:22 PM
I wonder what happens if Peyton gets hurt? Does the NFL just call it a season then?
September 7th, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Tony Homo.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:23 PM
i got disagree on the league ‘needing tom brady.’ Not sure i buy the comparison to Kobe – an NFL roster has 80 players, and 11 are on the field at once. NBA has like 14 and 5.
Obviously this is a huge blow, but the ‘needing Brady’ seems excessive. Are people not going to show up at a game on Sunday because Brady is gone? are less people going to watch a pats game because of no brady?
last year’s unbeaten shit was an aberration.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:24 PM
Please don’t ever utter those words.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:25 PM
SM2535 – I totally agree. What harm does acknowledging a scoop do the the four letter other than hurt the ego of its reporters? Being first to a story seems to only be important to those trying to report the story. I feel like reporters should be ethically obligated to recognize the source.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Shouldn’t the headline read, Yahoo!
September 7th, 2008 at 8:29 PM
Damn…all the Brady hatin…I guess I know what it feels like to be a Yankees fan now.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:30 PM
man, it’s nice to have Devin Hester back. no way they kick to him again after that scare
September 7th, 2008 at 8:32 PM
kyle orton fumbled the first snap!
bwwwwwwaaaaahhhhhhhhhh
September 7th, 2008 at 8:32 PM
TBL – Obviously the league doesn’t ‘need’ Brady. But it is big blow to their marketing campaign. A league MVP is a league MVP. People not normally attracted to the sport are going to pay attention when Brady is involved. Losing Brady loses the continued attention of those people.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:32 PM
Try being a Cowboys fan sm2535.
/Fan since childhood
September 7th, 2008 at 8:34 PM
Biggest sign that the Bears WR’s suck: Brandon Lloyd is on the team.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
If Moss wants to call out Pollard for a cheap shot, perhaps he should take a look at the replay of what Harrison did to Trent Green back in ‘99 to end his season. Of course, the Rams had God’s grocery clerk as a backup. The Pats have Matt Cassel.
Suck on it, Patriots.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
The NFL does not need Brady. The NFL is marketed as a team game whereas a league like the NBA is a superstar league. The Patriots are still going to sell out every game.
I really see the positives out weighing the negatives. Pats fans are going to be watching more snaps of Patriots football because they know they aren’t a lock for the playoffs. If they miss the playoffs a fresh team, fanbase and market gets the big time exposure which is only a good thing.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:42 PM
Hey, Sportsgal — tell me how great Tom Brady and Matt Schaub are again. Remember that? Those were awesome times.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:44 PM
@obit rice
The other sign is that Brandon Lloyd is the most “accomplished” of their receivers.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:45 PM
What Moss said was fucking stupid. No (sane) Pats fan agrees with that.
/(Sane) Pats fan
September 7th, 2008 at 8:47 PM
As for the Panthers, it looks like the “Reverse Curse of Steve Smith Getting Suspended” is back in full effect.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:49 PM
Moss was just emotional after seeing his boy go down.. I’d give him a pass.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:52 PM
A guy like Smith will probably take it as a personal affront that the Panthers actually deigned to win without him and go to light up the first secondary he sees when he returns.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:53 PM
I wonder how many games of Cassel sucking it up will it take for Malcontent Moss to appear…?
September 7th, 2008 at 8:53 PM
BTW: Anthony Gonzalez. Two drops. Let’s not retire MarHar just yet.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:54 PM
Don’t think the NFL “needs Brady.” There are plenty of other story lines, compelling players, and *gasp* teams to keep the season interesting. As for those that took him in the first round of pretend football, this has to hurt (looks to TBL). Oh, and for those of us living in NE, I think we’ll be seeing some half mast flags tomorrow.
/Eagles fan in Pats territory
September 7th, 2008 at 8:57 PM
Fffooortayyy to the house!
September 7th, 2008 at 8:57 PM
forte has another gear….just blew past sanders.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:59 PM
oh and RIP Don Haskins.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/basketball/ncaa/09/07/haskins.obit.ap/index.html
September 7th, 2008 at 9:01 PM
Belichick needs to start cheating again. I think this will prove that Brady was the key to the winnings and not so much the coach. Karma is a bitch New England. ALthough my fantasy team just dropped the kids off at the pool, it is almost worth not having to spend the year with ESPN on the patriot wagon.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:05 PM
That was a bullshit call, should have never been ruled down by contact
September 7th, 2008 at 9:06 PM
colts got major lucky on that kickoff. come on Hester … darn. colts dont want to have fun.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:07 PM
/off topic
I’m about to buy a bed, does anyone have a temper pedic style mattress? I would like to know if it’s worth the extra dough.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:07 PM
Didnt the Pats already get “karma” in the Superbowl? Come on, how much more karma are we supposed to take to make up for our “transgressions”? Brady didn’t deserve this.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:08 PM
@SM2535- Van Pelt is the only guy that openly gives props to non-WWL reporters. He’s doesn’t drink the Mouse’s Kool-Aid like everyone else.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:09 PM
Van Pelt also the only one to acknowledge the existence of blogs.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:10 PM
tallguy – no doubt it is worth the extra money. a superior quality product.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:12 PM
chris simms on his way to NE.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:14 PM
Lozo, you’re a cock sucker. Like I have any fucking control over a guy rolling over Tom Brady’s knee. He was the best QB in the league until he got hurt. You can go fuck yourself.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:16 PM
SG-enjoying the beat down?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Take a look at natural latex foam mattresses before doing the memory foam. Expensive, but my wife and I are happy we made the investment. One of the big pluses is that it doesn’t retain heat and bounces back instantly instead of leaving “craters” that take some time to come up. A quick search pulled up this site that matches my experience …
ah, from Brady to bed recommendations. What a site…
September 7th, 2008 at 9:19 PM
sparty- How gay is it that up until about 5 pm my QB had outscored your entire team and now you’re gonna beat me?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:19 PM
Sorry , this link re: beds
September 7th, 2008 at 9:21 PM
Best money you’ll ever spend Tallguy.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:21 PM
Fetch-i’m not even playing you.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:22 PM
The rules for both of these leagues are retarded. It should be TDs and yards and that’s it. And I love that you’re such a royal douche Sparty, you’re gloating over the fact that you’re beating a team with a QB who went out in the first quarter. Great win for you, it was TOTALLY competitive. You’re as much as a cock sucker as Lozo.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Speaking of sucking, Knight Rider looks stupid.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:24 PM
SG-Donovan McNabb and Reggie Bush are the reasons why I am kicking your ass. Reggie Wayne is playing right now. It is a mauling SG.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:25 PM
Sparty- Sparty and Spencer are the same person, Ok?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:26 PM
@fetch-the scoring in that league is retarded.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:27 PM
WOW, he just got lit the fuck up.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:29 PM
damn, looks like I’m in the wrong TBL league.
Thanks guys for the advice, I’m getting one now.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:33 PM
TBL-i haven’t looked, how is your team doing tonight?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:37 PM
I wonder if Orton worries about the pint of whiskey he has in his game pants breaking when he scrambles around like that?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:40 PM
sparty – im on the cusp of 4-0.
also, may try to set a record for posts tomorrow
safety!!!!!! Addai drilled!!!!!!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 9:40 PM
What has Brady done but win and bang hot chicks to inspire all the hate?
/Looking for beer 12…it’s gonna be okay.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:41 PM
what was that baseball stadium in the background from the aerial view?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:42 PM
probably the home of the AAA Indianapolis Indians
September 7th, 2008 at 9:43 PM
my closest is against Intern Bill. i lead 129-127 (we were, by far, the highest scorers in the league) and I have Peterson going against his Cutler.
I’m losing by 8 in another (104-96), but I have vikings, selvin young and driver left. He currently has Addai and Hester. That’s my team with Brady. I was carried by Plax, Willie Parker and Brandon Jacobs
September 7th, 2008 at 9:44 PM
Obviously Intern Bill knows a lot more about football than baseball.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:45 PM
I actually don’t hate Brady, he’s never said or done anything to piss me off. However, living in CT has exposed me to the Masshole and Boston Sports fan. I’ve never met a more self absorbed fan base. Fuck them all and their impending 7-9 season.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:46 PM
will the colts cover -9.5? for the sake of TBD, i hope so.
for the sake of my prediction that the Colts would struggle this year … no comment
September 7th, 2008 at 9:46 PM
it isn’t mort, it isn’t clayton, but it is Trent Dilfer reporting for ESPN that Brady is out for the season.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:49 PM
like i said…his QB’s would be his downfall. if it wasn’t for Turner being all world against the horrendous Lions, you would have murdered him.
@fetch-Intern Bills two QBs are Cutler and Anderson. it is going to kill him.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:52 PM
Horrible noncall on the play right before the safety. Obviously the refs bias’ moved too.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:54 PM
Note regarding Easterbrook… people who are TRULY smart don’t try so hard to prove it. The guy is well read, not necessarily that intelligent.
September 7th, 2008 at 9:57 PM
Closing in on a 4-0 fantasy week, it’s good to be the king
September 7th, 2008 at 9:58 PM
where the hell is Trent Dilfer reporting this? TV or online?
Someone has to be the sacrificial lamb, i suppose. entourage in two mins …
September 7th, 2008 at 9:59 PM
good call on this, man
September 7th, 2008 at 10:00 PM
I wish being good at fantasy football made me the king.
I think Easterbrook is in reality that smart, but I think he tries a bit too hard to prove it.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:11 PM
I used to read Easterbrook pretty closely, but now just skim it–he’s gone over the edge. Anyone notice that his recent columns have had fewer cheesecake shots than previous years?
That said, more Colts cheerleader shots, please.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:21 PM
it was ESPNEWS. time to watch the rest from bed. night ladies.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:23 PM
one more thing. Mort is now reporting that Tim Rattay is also being brought in for a workout.
Yeah, Brady is done.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:24 PM
Is there anything more adorable than an angry, foul-mouthed Sportsgal? If she gets this worked up over a fantasy league with nothing at stake, imagine when things don’t go her way when it matters. It’s just a Jerry League, dude. When I go undefeated, I’m not going to care one bit.
BTW, what is up with transactions in that league? How is she able to pick up Cassel tonight? Don’t we have some sort of waiver period now that the season has started? Is it first-come, first-served all the time?
September 7th, 2008 at 10:35 PM
TBL, did you see Leighton Meester is going to be on Entourage?
September 7th, 2008 at 10:37 PM
MarHars gonna put a cap in Tillman’s ass now.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Looks like I might be getting knocked out of my suicide pool with this game, but I’ll take it
September 7th, 2008 at 10:41 PM
So if the Pats keep winning with trash at QB, is it possible to stfu about Brady being the best ever? Please?
September 7th, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Is it me, or did it sound like a whole lot of cheering when the TD was upheld? Must be a lot of Bear fans crashing the opening night at the new Indy stadium…
September 7th, 2008 at 10:42 PM
bears with a bit of a shocker, huh? 22-13 and the Colts look slow and old.
Entourage was pretty solid. the Ari of old returned!
September 7th, 2008 at 10:42 PM
hermit – i just thought the same thing
September 7th, 2008 at 10:43 PM
Diesel, dont worry, I picked Cincy in my eliminator. For I am Lord of the Idiots
September 7th, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Looks like there is a decent amount from the crowd shots. Indy fans are notorious front runners and tend to go silent when things don’t go their way, making it easier to hear the Bears fans.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:44 PM
serena is just overpowering jankovic. doesn’t even look close
September 7th, 2008 at 10:45 PM
I decided to gamble a bit and take the Falcons. I’m assuming that’s the only opportunity I’d ever have to take them.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Well done Fetch, I’m guessing a good number of people took San Diego
September 7th, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Thought about San Diego, but thought Id save them for later…of course now there is no later
September 7th, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Damn I missed entourage.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Lozo, I don’t give a shit about the league, I give a shit that you’re acting like a cocky asshole. If you don’t care, then why do you feel the need to point out the fact that my starting QB is out for the season? And why did you whine about me picking up a replacement tonight?
September 7th, 2008 at 10:48 PM
I got lucky with NE. I am going Gmen next week against the Arena League Rams.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:51 PM
I had San Diego locked in as my pick until like 2 hours before the deadline and decided to switch it. If I win my pool this year I’m gonna donate half of it to Arthur Blank I think. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the check for under $100
September 7th, 2008 at 10:53 PM
Dont have HBO so have never gotten into Entourage (hear its great), will be tuning in to the Ice Road Truckers finale here out west. Nobody spoil for me if anyone dies
September 7th, 2008 at 10:55 PM
nice Seinfeld link hermit.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Jessica Simpson is singing with ZZ top on ABC right now. She’s dancing around like a fucking idiot. And her outfit is awful.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:56 PM
i cant believe the colts went for it.
and i can’t believe they didnt get it.
this kid Forte is off to a tremendous start
reminds me a bit of neal anderson.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:57 PM
@ benji
Leighton Meester played the Britney-like virgin pop star back in Season 1 or 2.
On a related note, has anyone caught any of the VMAs tonight? It’s a freaking mess.
September 7th, 2008 at 10:57 PM
I just realized that between my college team (Oregon St), NFL (Seahawks) and Fantasy (1 team, I know, lightweight), I will likely be a combined 0-4 to start the year. Fantastic….
September 7th, 2008 at 11:01 PM
since my comment about Serena, she has gone completely in the tank. jankovic won 3 games in a row and is a point away from forcing a third set.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Jason McKie for the TD!!!!!!! Love Jason, super nice guy.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:03 PM
colts down 16!!
856 left
September 7th, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Fantastic weekend for the 3 AFC teams who have had their stick ridden by the media (Colts, Pats, Chargers)…
September 7th, 2008 at 11:05 PM
I just realized that I used the word “fantastic” in 2 consecutive posts. Im sure theres some kind of penalty for that, so lay it on me…
September 7th, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Piece of advice for all you single guys out there: if your ex-girlfriend calls, don’t answer.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:13 PM
@ hermit
You have to moderate comments for the next Kobe>LeBron, LeBron>Kobe post.
Britney’s cleaning up at the VMAs–and some creepy British guy is interviewing people. Kanye’s closing the show, so maybe he can salvage this.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:15 PM
Are the VMAs still on… I havent watched that (or MTV) since like 1996
September 7th, 2008 at 11:16 PM
fetch, now you have to elaborate.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:17 PM
broseph, that’s a pretty harsh punishment. The poor guy didn’t know any better.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:17 PM
triston, no I do not haha. Did you watch the KU game last night?
September 7th, 2008 at 11:18 PM
colts are cooked
Forte 23-123, TD
September 7th, 2008 at 11:18 PM
yeah. Had tickets but spent most of the day in the office so when I left I just went to the bar.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:18 PM
So, in terms of fantasy, with this season thing being unofficial I got a guy saying he might deal me Julius Jones or Eli Manning for Brady. Trying to talk him into Ronnie Brown. Is it worth it to deal Brady for something like that, or just hold him and hope he pulls a Merriman and plays on it?
September 7th, 2008 at 11:19 PM
Just read a Yahoo! story on it. Now I remember why I don’t watch MTV.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:19 PM

September 7th, 2008 at 11:21 PM
@ Triston
OK, then he has to 10 push-ups every time Madden says someone got “outphysicaled”
September 7th, 2008 at 11:23 PM
hahaha. Kobe Bryant on the MTV Awards. Lebron would never pull that weakness.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:24 PM
broseph, That sounds fair. He’ll be in pique condition in no time.
Joboo, TAKE IT!!! are you kidding me?
September 7th, 2008 at 11:26 PM
@ benji
Evidence suggests otherwise. But at least he got to hold on to Ashanti
September 7th, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Serena won the US Open and did a racket toss that would have made Jake Locker proud.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:28 PM
@broseph: nice photoshopping.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:28 PM
