Schilling: “The Yankees suck this year … now they got Tom going down, so New York is excited.”
NFL September 9th. 2008, 10:15am
How desperate is Curt Schilling to remain relevant? The ornery blogger hasn’t thrown a pitch this season for the Red Sox, but he went on WEEI radio this morning to opine on Tom Brady’s injury, as if his voice matters:
“People don’t like [New England/Boston] anymore. The euphoria in New York is palpable. The Yankees suck this year, and they’re bitter and mad and they’re making excuses over that. Now they got Tom going down, so New York is excited.”
Anymore? We remain utterly perplexed about why everyone is so crushed emotionally about Tom Brady’s season-ending injury. We’re not heartless – we had a melancholy moment when TBD called us at 1:30 Sunday to scream, “YOU HAVEN’T HEARD? TOM BRADY WENT DOWN!” – but we’re not one of those sports fans who thinks the league needs dynasties to prosper.
Do that many people out there live vicariously through Brady? The thought that he carries the NFL on his back is laughable – the idea that somehow the entire league is crippled or less interesting without him seems patently insane.

He has a point. I dont remember an athlete ever getting the cheers that Brady got for getting hurt. Maybe Michael Irvin, but that was just Philly fans. There are reports of stadiums and bars throughout the country that went into euphoric celebration after hearing about it. I think you’re missing his point, it’s not expected to be crushed emotionally, but the way this injury was celebrated was disgusting.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:19 AM
Of course they are happy, it gives the Jets a chance in the AFC East.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:20 AM
A similar injury to Tony Romo would put those euphoric celebrations to shame.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:22 AM
Im glad Tom went down. Lets make the AFC interesting this year.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Dammit, TBL. you’re stealing my thunder. check here at approximately 1:00, EST.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:23 AM
likewise…im happy brady went down…he’s a twat.
that whole organization has some serious karmic payback coming their way.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:25 AM
that whole organization has some serious karmic payback coming their way.
I like watching Brady play so in that instance I am disappointed but Spencer is completely right.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:25 AM
shouldn’t have laughed about Plax’s prediction, Tom. now NY will laugh at you.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:26 AM
You make it really hard to feel bad for all the Cleveland bashing spence.
I really don’t get fans cheering injuries like that. He makes the games better, the top 5 games last year played in the league all involved the Pats. People should miss seeing the best play great football. Instead they get Browns vs. Bengals…good shit.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Wasn’t the SB karmic payback and the fact they had to deal with baseless accusations from a disgruntled former employee leading up to the biggest game of the season?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:29 AM
Sterlin…the thing about being happy he got hurt, yea, that was facetious.
the part about the pats having some karmic swing going the other way? you gotta admit things have gone perfectly for the team, especially considering the classlessness the organization showed. vrabel, bruschi, brady, and belichick are all douchebags…things have to come back.
to be honest, i’m going to miss seeing brady play, but it’s not the end of the world.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:30 AM
I guarantee you that I hate Curt Schilling more than any other Red Sox fan. However…I can see his point here. Why? Because when any sports fan has a losing team they get bitter. He didn’t put it eloquently, but that’s what he was shooting for.
The league is not crippled, but the numbers don’t lie: Brady makes them win, win big, and win often. The ratings for every Pats game last year were huge. The NFC (FOX) always beats the AFC (CBS) when it comes to ratings, but the Patriots were a boon to CBS last year and the NFL as a whole. Huge numbers. So to that extent, the league is hurt.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:31 AM
That’s what I thought.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:31 AM
I think bigger irony/karma would have occurred if Favre went down with a career ending injury.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:31 AM
The death of Tom Brady makes the league much better
September 9th, 2008 at 10:31 AM
what classlessness (sp?) from vrabel, bruschi, and brady?
things have gone well for them, but thats like saying the colts have had a run of luck (manning not hurt) and thats why freeney/harrison/saturday have gone down
September 9th, 2008 at 10:33 AM
one loss? lets see…getting moss for pennies, welker for pennies, having shitty corners and ALWAYS making it out alive, getting brady in the 6th round, years and years of draft hits, belichick turning out to be an all-timer after blowing it in cleveland, etc…the pats have been blessed, this is what, the 2nd bad thing to happen to them in the last 6 years?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:34 AM

New York is a huge market, Favre in New York will make up for that.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Spence: I hope you have sons. Beautiful, handsome boys. Articulate, educated, and athletic. And I hope they have their legs taken from them, so you can know what this pain is like.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:37 AM
New England fans can suck it up, you have had 3 Super Bowl wins in 8 years, welcome back to Earth.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:38 AM
As a Colts fan, I hated to see Brady go down. Now we could potentially be robbed of the greatest – and most watched – rivalry of this century, which is still in it’s prime.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:38 AM
I’m sure Curt plotted his return to relevance and called up the radio station so he could get on. Maybe next time he should just play flip cup with some undergrads at Boston College.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Hef…that sounds really familiar.
anyways, my kids are playing golf the day they can stand on their own.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:39 AM
+1 Hef…well played well played
September 9th, 2008 at 10:39 AM
So because a team has had a run of good luck, their star deserves to get hurt? I simply don’t follow this logic. Of course I can see rooting against them, and if you’ve noticed, they haven’t won a Superbowl in 4 years, so you should be happy. Rooting and cheering for injuries is bush league.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Better Rivalry on next Monday night
September 9th, 2008 at 10:40 AM
@ Hef
The best part of that movie is Michael Clarke Duncan’s overacting when they have to tell Bobby he’s not paralyzed. That, and when Cal calls Ricky to ask how to work the stereo and TV remotes–”cuz I like to party”
September 9th, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Have I missed the memo that fans of one team have to not only not wish for other team’s injuries, but feel bad when they happen? This is crazy. This isn’t an Irvin thng at all. That was live chearing in the face of a man crumpled in pain. That’s classless. This is simply fans of other teams happy that the ievitable injury to a star player happened to someone else instead of them this time around.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Sterlin…hey, i just don’t like the pats. i don’t like seeing vrabel dive at joe thomas’ knees a full 3 seconds after the play was blown dead and then start jawing. i don’t like bruschi getting a sack when up by 4 scores and then dancing around like he’s the shit. it sickens me to see brady in there throwing TD’s when the score is 42-7 in the 4th. it rubs me the wrong way.
and by no means is this an indictment of the pats themselves, they’re a helluva team, top to bottom, and amazing to watch but i find it hard to root for any player on that team other than randy moss, and even then, it’s just because he’s such an asshole it’s funny.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Yeah, wow they made good trades and played great team defense. A concept far too uncommon for most teams in the league.
Still waiting on why Brady, Bruschi and Vrabel are classless.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:43 AM
TBL he has a great point. Your thoughts on it are a little jaded since you are a big Yankees fan.
but is he still a big bag of wind? yep
September 9th, 2008 at 10:43 AM
North East is a shit Region.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:43 AM
YYSA – Yeah, most great rivalries involve a team who hasn’t won a playoff game in 12 years and one who hasn’t won a Super Bowl in…well, ever.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:45 AM
TBL, in case you weren’t aware, the Yanks magic number is 10.
/Tom Brady is a saint
September 9th, 2008 at 10:45 AM
Why do people always think rivalries only involve good teams or good teams playing recently. The best rivalries transcend on the field performance.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:47 AM
If Vrabel did that, then yeah its a bad play I can accept that point, im not the biggest vrabel fan either. Sorry, but next time I am sure Bruschi will just let the QB get the pass off.
I flipped a bit on the running up the score thing, but to be honest these are grown men and if you re-watch the games the Skins/Bills/Phins, etc. all quit midway through the 2nd/3rd Q. They got what they deserved for not playing the game full out.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:47 AM
rittyrich – Oh I know, I love watching Chiefs-Raiders! They hate each other!
September 9th, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Classless? I’ll give you classless. After seeing Tom Brady walking off the field, a friend of mine said “I hope it’s a ligament, but it’d be even better if their plane has a mid-air collision with the Cowboys’ plane.” He deadpanned it too.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Why do people keep saying that they shouldn’t have to feel bad for the injury? No shit you don’t. No one has said that. There is a difference between rooting against a team and cheering when you see their star player writhing around in pain. You don’t have to hold a fucking vigil for him.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Here’s the thing though, of course the Jets fans would cheer. They cheered their own starting quarterback getting hurt while he was trying to hobble off the field. I was just more surprised about the national reaction. After Matt Walsh, Arlen Specter, the superbowl, and this, aren’t we more than even now?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
I don’t like the Patriots, therefore I have no interest in watching them be successful. Them and their fans have had plenty of success, so if they suck, so be it, stop crying.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Brady’s fine. It’s his fucking knee. It’s not like it’s a broken neck. Fuck the Pats.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Sterlin, no one is saying that you cannot run up the score or that football players are not grown men, its a straw man arguement. The fact is the actions of the Pats underscores why they are viewed as Classless. That and coachs off field shenanigans and Rodney Harrison.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Sterlin…agree to disagree. no hard feelings.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
What did that result in? Besides nothing, of course.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Yeah, I don’t particularly like watching them either, but their rivalry will live on long after Peyton has retired and the Colts stumble and “the greatest rivalry of the century” disappears.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:53 AM
In the great words of the playmaker “You can’t blame them, I’ve been killing them for years”
September 9th, 2008 at 10:53 AM
What’s the old saying: You can take the douche out of tO$U, but you can’t take tO$U out of the douche?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I hate seeing him go down, but I disagree with the whole “he’s the face of the NFL” and “the NFL needs Tom Brady” shit. Until they landed Moss last year and he started chucking jump balls into end zones neither of those things were true. Of course, it’s ESPN propagating that since they’re based in Bristol, but still. If I have to see Berman look like he’s physically ill when talking about the injury one more time…
September 9th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Nick P: How about months of annoyance and distractions? Do you think last year was actually fun for Pats fans? Cause it wasn’t.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:56 AM
@cracker: If you watch ESPN, then I suppose. Otherwise, it shouldn’t have bothered you at all. I’ll take 18-0 heading into the super bowl if I have to put up with some non-story bs.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Why do you care if people cheer? Its not like they have a button they can press which will cause Brady physical pain.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Seriously, your team has been amazing for the past 8 years. NO ONE FEELS SORRY FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!
September 9th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
I can see that SM, but I don’t have to agree with it. I won’t defend Bill though. Love that he coaches them, but can’t really defend him.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:58 AM
If blogs were around in 1990 and I came on here crying about Joe Montana getting hurt and that the Niners wouldn’t get a three peat people would tell me to shut the hell up.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:58 AM
What a crock. You know who it wasn’t fun for…the rest of the damn league and all the other fans. You feel this way now that you were 18-1
September 9th, 2008 at 10:58 AM
Can’t help you there, past the aforementioned Vrabel cheapshots, which Bruschi also excels at.
But here are a few gems:
1. Wilfork going after J.P. Losman’s knee
2. Wilfork poking Brandon Jacobs in the eye
3. Richard Seymour inviting the Giants to the Pats’ 19-0 victory party before the Super Bowl was over
Does that work for ya? I’ve got more.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Seymour taunted the opposing team!! Oh NO, call Ma and Pa! Not like he didn’t pay for it. If Seymour is classless then so is the entire Giants (that basketball shot celebration)/Chargers (Lights out)/every player ever for taunting/Jake Locker, grow up.
The Wilfork eye thing was shit I agree. I think the Losman thing was an accident.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
/Mike Brown’d
September 9th, 2008 at 11:07 AM
Oh CBH, since when is defending your team crying? Aren’t you the guy that does the same thing with the O’s on a daily basis?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
I don’t get all the hate for Brady. Or Romo. It’s a damned if you do/damned if you don’t thing. If you become successful and land yourself a pretty girl, the entire country just sits back and waits to rip you apart for being successful. It’s pathetic.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:10 AM
It is crying when your team has been as successful as yours has, I can’t relate to what you are so upset about, when you have been spoiled with success.
Sterlin, you were a Pats fan when they sucked balls I hope, or did you discover your fandom in 2001?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:13 AM
/context’d
September 9th, 2008 at 11:13 AM
The Romo hatred is because he’s a douche who wears his hat backwards.
/for real
September 9th, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Watch the video again. I find it hard to believe that Wilfork “accidentally” stuck out his elbow toward Losman, and it coincidentally hit in the exact spot where it would shred Losman’s knee. Believe whatever you want to though, maybe that’s an agree to disagree situation.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
I hate Manning. I dont want to see him get a season ending injury. This is not “crying about my team”. I dont expect you to feel sorry for me IN THE LEAST. Has nothing to do with the argument.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
If that’s directed at me cracker, read what I wrote, I never said I wanted to see Brady injured.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:21 AM
No, the “crying” comment was directed towards you. The wanting to see Brady get injured is what this whole effing thing is about.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:22 AM
I took you saying feel sorry for us about SpyGate and all we went through as crying.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:23 AM
I didn’t cheer when Brady got injured. I will cheer when Matt Cassel throws INTs
September 9th, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Sorry CBH – I wish I could still fit into the Bledsoe jersey I had as a kid but sadly i’ve grown about two feet since being a pats fan. (I dont really count when your five, you dont know shit, I start counting when you are about 10 or ‘94)
September 9th, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Well I didnt mean that to say “feel sorry for us”. I meant that in direction to the people saying we are getting what we deserve and this is karma and all that. I’m just wondering at what point the karma thing is evened out.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:27 AM
No one is saying feel sorry for pats fans, its just defending their favorite team when people constantly attack them for their success and “misdeeds”.
When a Pats player taunts someone its classless and they are dicks, when Hines Ward does it or Merriman, its playing the game hard. Ward is right on par with Pats defenders when it comes to dirty play.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Couldn’t agree more everyone of those players is douchebags especially pats defenders
September 9th, 2008 at 11:45 AM
I should clarify, I do agree with you here. Ward is one of the dirtiest players in the league, and he and his charming smile can die in a fire.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:47 AM
I really don’t get cheering for other teams players to be injured. I want my team to beat other teams with their best players available. It is just not as satisfying otherwise.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:49 AM
These guys are happy

my bad. worng post
September 9th, 2008 at 12:05 PM
Haha agreed. If you have to be force fed montages, and sappy human interest pieces, at least let it be about a very good team instead of say…Tampa and Oakland. I don’t think I cared less about any Super Bowl.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:12 PM
It’s going to take a fire hose to wash away the accumulated sand in all the vaginas around here. Geesh.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:13 PM
And – don’t feed the trolls (referring to Schilling).
September 9th, 2008 at 12:47 PM
Why should this Yankee fan, who’s also a Giant fan, give a rat’s ass about Brady going down? My team already pounded his ass in January, and if by some small chance there had been a rematch again this coming January, he would have been in for more of the same.
@slbuckeye: agree wholeheartedly.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:49 PM
“Why should this Yankee fan, who’s also a Giant fan, give a rat’s ass about Brady going down? ”
WHO ASKED YOU TO????
September 9th, 2008 at 1:10 PM
Curt Schilling says I’m euphoric.
