Tampa Still Just Tepid About the Rays
Baseball September 17th. 2008, 5:45pm
Presented without comment:
“If you’re not going to come out now for the Tampa Bay Rays, when are you going to come out?” [Boston's Sean] Casey said Tuesday. “Especially against the Red Sox, pennant race, middle of September, you’re tied for the lead, you’ve been leading the whole year. The bottom line is, every city wants a major-league baseball team, and if Tampa Bay can’t draw now, when are they going to draw?”
In other baseball news, Seattle’s Erik Bedard, who hasn’t pitched since July, is finally going under the knife for “exploratory” surgery on his bothersome left shoulder. (He already had left elbow surgery in 2003.) He plans to pitch next year. In case you’re wondering how the Seattle-Baltimore deal turned out … sleepy Adam Jones is having a solid season with the O’s, despite missing a month with a broken foot.

George Sherrill was pretty good until his arm fell off.
Tampa fan response: Oh you’re just being negative about the Rays, blah, blah. The Rays aren’t being supported and anyone that isn’t biased can see how pathetic it is, no one is picking on you.
September 17th, 2008 at 5:53 PM
I forget what Intern Bill called the Rays home stadium, but i laughed out loud when he wrote me the email about it. Rest assured, it was funny.
September 17th, 2008 at 5:55 PM
TBL, you inventing this Intern Bill character was cute at first, but you can admit you’re him now. Or give us his commenter name. Either works.
September 17th, 2008 at 5:57 PM
Intern Bill is Snuffiluffigus or lives in the Niagra Falls area.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:02 PM
I don’t know if he has a commenter name. i can check. i don’t know why you think he’s some figment of your imagination – dude’s real. We’ve talked on the phone and everything! I don’t want to give away what he has coming up, but it might be pretty cool.
You know what else would be cool? if the Twins overtook the Rays … ah, nevermind.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:02 PM
I thought drawing 30,000 for the weeknight games against the Sox was pretty good. Attendance is definitely up. I heard yesterday that Tampa was 26th in attendance (up from 29th last year). I can tell you the attendance is definitely better having made the 4-hour haul over to Tampa to see a couple of games and watching the telecasts on TV. But I guess each day brings a new way that TBL tries to denigrate the Rays. Can’t wait to see what BS you’ll trot out next.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:02 PM
It’s always entertaining when the picture has nothing to do with the headline or pre-jump text.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:02 PM
The O’s also got this 19-year old pitcher, Chris Tillman. Who last I checked had more Ks than innings pitched, as tearing up Double A. Jesus we slaughtered the Mariners on that one. Got rid of a solemn Bedard for two stud prospects and a solid reliever / good trade chip.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:05 PM
post-jump text?
also: just crushed a bag of Haribo candy cola bottles. so damn good. saving the gummy bears for tomorrow.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Hahha, that’s a great picture of Pacman.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:06 PM
I don’t have a clue how I was able to comment. The mouse on our work desktop stopped working at like 1pm, and I haven’t been able to go buy a new one since I’m the only one manning the store today. Not having a mouse makes it impossible to do anything on a desktop. Fuck life.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:13 PM
Didn’t Kazmir say something similar. If Tampa can’t sell out or get to 3/4 capacity for a first place team in the middle of the pennant race then move them somewhere that will.
I vote Montreal.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:18 PM
TBL – you taking anyone in the CFB game tonight? I liking the 4.5 with K State
September 17th, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Who is K State playing? It’s not listed on ESPN.com?
September 17th, 2008 at 6:19 PM
took Louisville +5.5
September 17th, 2008 at 6:20 PM
Oh ok, Louisville.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:20 PM
Tampa being 26th in attendance completely confirms exactly what this post/Sean Casey was saying. Who gives a shit if they moved up three spots if it is still in the cellar of all MLB.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:20 PM
Ill – i was wrong the cowboys, so what do i know. but i think too many people are reading a lot into KState’s two huge wins against shit nobody teams, and Louisville’s 27-2 loss to Kentucky.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:23 PM
TBL making a funny about the Twins proves to me he’s not Intern Bill. Intern Bill would never be that clever.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:28 PM
look dont put that fans not flocking to the trop shit up. Its too goddamn far for drunk driving and its not even in Tampa its in St. pete. fans are being smart but they will show up for Playoff action.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:31 PM
TBL – I’m usually against the majority but I like K State tonight. I had Philly and the over Monday night but that was to make up for the dumbass decision to take OSU Saturday.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Fantasy football interlude:
I got offered Gates and Eddie Royal for Greg Jennings. Seems like a no brainer but it is a 3WR league (Jennings is my 3rd behind Wayne & Boldin) and I have Shockey at TE, who has to produce sometime.
I’m thinking about countering with Jennings/Shockey for Gates/Lee Evans. Am I insane?
September 17th, 2008 at 6:33 PM
anyone up for a quick game of madden? i got 45 mins before the wife gets home …
September 17th, 2008 at 6:34 PM
Rays management should just screw it and tell MLB that they want to be a barnstorming team. All their home games would be played in the “away” team’s stadium or whatever town could guarantee 25,000 people a game for a three-game series. Would anyone be against this?
September 17th, 2008 at 6:34 PM
Haha you sound like my brother
September 17th, 2008 at 6:35 PM
took OSU too … but early in the week before Wells was ruled out. serves me for not waiting until just before the game. low $, though. i actually did well on college football saturday with two hits and only the OSU loss.
the NFL 1 pm games f’d me … made up for it with some late hits.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:36 PM
Haha you sound like my brother

I went on my first real date Friday night (I’m only 22 mind you), and from my part, the execution was fine. But as soon as she brought up being in love, I brought the proceedings to a quick end. My god, bitches are crazy. Just reaffirmed my lack of interest in being in a relationship. Love my ass.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:46 PM

September 17th, 2008 at 6:51 PM
Nah, I live in Jersey, about 5 miles outside Philly. But I’m down that way often because of family / sports / academic interests.

September 17th, 2008 at 6:54 PM
TBL how do I find you
September 17th, 2008 at 6:58 PM
TB, do you have a headset?
September 17th, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Yeah. Watch out for Adam Jones and his .313 OBP and 9 home runs. He is a good defender, yes, but his OPS+ is 88, he ranks 211th in the majors in VORP (211th!) and 27th among Center Fielders. Yeah, he’s 23, so he’ll get better (probably) but right now he is having the opposite of a solid season.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:10 PM
NO my head set is broke.
What happened your wife come home?
September 17th, 2008 at 7:12 PM
CRM’s home, and he wants his dinner on the table, b****!
September 17th, 2008 at 7:16 PM
VORP is a counting stat cassino, so of course he’s not going to be very high. And yes he will get better. I’d rather have his next 5 years than Erik Bedards.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:37 PM
Thank you, fetch. And considering how Jones started the season and watching the adjustments he made throughout the season, yes he will be a much better player than Bedard ever was.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:37 PM
I like the under in the KState/Louisville game
55 1/2 seems like a ton.. but every time I go under there are 4 TDs scored in the first quarter.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:38 PM
His OPS+ is 88, his EqA is .255, and is VORP is just 8.8
This does not add up to a “solid” season. If you can find some metric that supports the claim, I’d love to see it, because right now Jones is a below average player who doesn’t get on base or hit for power.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:41 PM
Not the argument. The argument is whether or not he’s having a “solid” season. As in, this season. And he is not, as I have shown.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:41 PM
random tangent..
anyone seen the first 3 episodes of the shield this season? vic mackey is a fucking bad ass. they’ve set up the story line quite nice so far
September 17th, 2008 at 7:42 PM
I’m not saying he’s good, I’m just saying part of the reason his VORP is so low is that it’s a counting stat. He is a very good defensive center fielder though, which shouldn’t be overlooked.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:43 PM
He’s only 23 and was hurt for two months of the season. Like most young players in their first big league season, his plate discipline isn’t good, but power always comes later in a hitter’s career.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:47 PM
Or after they meet Victor Conte
September 17th, 2008 at 7:48 PM
I don’t think Baltimore expected him to have a solid season when they wanted him in the trade. They wanted to see him make progress and he did.
The more relevant argument is about who got the better end of the deal, and judging by Jones and Sherrill’s seasons, I’d say the Orioles did.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:48 PM
just curious – where did you find these stats?
September 17th, 2008 at 7:49 PM
The AL East is going to be a fucking tough division in 3 years. Markakis, Jones and Weiters is one of the best young trios in all of baseball.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:49 PM
Hanley is a beast 2 HRs
September 17th, 2008 at 7:50 PM
TBL.. baseballprospectus.com, and baseballreference.com.. only takes a few seconds
September 17th, 2008 at 7:58 PM
TBL you got scarred and got off the Madden?
September 17th, 2008 at 8:05 PM
Ultimate Fight Night on Spike.. terrible matchups though. I think Evan Tanner is on the card.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:06 PM
Adam Jones is having a solid season.
His bat is not even average, but it’s worth about 9 runs above replacement.
However, he plays an excellent defensive centerfield (top 2 or 3). His glove is worth at least 12-15 runs.
Then bump him up about 5 more runs for position scarcity.
He’s worth conservatively 26-29 runs above replacement.
10 runs = 1 win, so he’s about a 2.5 – 3 WAR player.
1 WAR = $4.5 M on the free agent market. Jones is making dick this season, so he’s having more than a solid season. He’s been an absolute bargain.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:13 PM
too soon, cursed?
September 17th, 2008 at 8:15 PM
How to NOT cover spreads: fumbling the ball in the redzone.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:29 PM
I have Madden on Xbox as well, but I suck at it so no gamertag for u.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:36 PM
Mak it was my first time playing madden I had just got the game an hour ago when I was playing TBL I just converted a 4th down then the quarter ended and it said he lost connection. I don’t know what happened? DO you TBL?
September 17th, 2008 at 8:38 PM
Not that you’re inferring anything, right Tampa?
September 17th, 2008 at 8:47 PM
TB – Your connection was lost. I continued playing the CPU … until my connection was lost in the 3rd. i was up 14-3. I can’t believe Wilie Parker fumbled. Weak.
Mets lead 7-2 … i figure the bullpen panic should set in by 930
September 17th, 2008 at 8:51 PM
Is XBox’s Network Weak or something? Rays lead 8-3
September 17th, 2008 at 8:52 PM
BLAZERS34 is my gamertag. Creative, i know. I suck pretty bad, but Ill play anyone
September 17th, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Tampa Bo, hilarious gamertag name.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:23 PM
That’s a lot of assumptions.
Where do you get 12-15 runs for his glove? Are you just guessing, or is there some metric out there that shows that?
And as for 5 runs for position scarcity, I don’t know where you get that. Again, if there’s a metric out there that shows that, I’d love to see it. A google search of “baseball position scarcity” returned only hits to fantasy baseball related topics. Maybe Adam Jones is a solid fantasy pickup, but in real baseball he’s a poor center fielder.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Yea I got that one because I felt it was appropriate for Halo. I have another one The Big Jbowski. I need to upgrade it to gold.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:25 PM
TBL after 90210 you down for a rematch?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:39 PM
over at MLJ…
scary good prediction.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:46 PM
Adam Jones is #1 in Revised Zone Rating.
If you don’t value defense and scarcity, I don’t know what to tell you.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:47 PM
I though Adam Jones played guitar for Tool.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:49 PM
@tampa: You’re thinking of Kevin Duckworth.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:51 PM
Did I totally miss the boat on the David Foster Wallace suicide?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:52 PM
Lance Staley is dead.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:54 PM
There’s no question the O’s mauled the M’s in that deal. Jones is gonna be a stud. And fetch is right, that trio is sick, with Markakis and Weiters. Thank God for Andy MacPhail. If not for him, we’d be the Pirates.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:54 PM
who is lance staley?
TB – maybe at 10. had a match scheduled with someone, but not sure if it’s happening
September 17th, 2008 at 9:55 PM

September 17th, 2008 at 10:01 PM
mmm. cinnamon toast crunch…we only have Alpha Bits and Little Einsteins cereal in the house for the kid. Sparty’s House: where eating is educational!
September 17th, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Right on, fetch. I was terrified they wouldn’t sign him. As long as we get rid of the black hole that is Daniel Cabrera, it’s a young staff with some potential.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:04 PM
And Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the best cereal ever. No exaggeration. Ever.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:06 PM
this turned into a 200 comment thread here once. I said Golden Grahams. great even without Milk. Best “healthy” cereal is Basic 4.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:07 PM
Is anyone watching RW/RR Challenge?
September 17th, 2008 at 10:08 PM
Just heard on Fox News Sen. McCain has “war injuries” that keep him off of email. Right.

I remember that sparty. And I bet if you did this at 10am, it would happen again. It can with any of that stuff. And Golden Grahams is quality, I’ll give you that. But the Crunch is so good. I’ve been eating it since I was like 4, and it hasn’t gotten old in 18 years.

Mine breakfast usually ends up being a couple granola bars since I try to run before work. Getting up an extra 15minutes early would give me plenty of time to get a run in and a decent meal, but that’s too much sleep to give up.

Lucky Charms, marshmallows for breakfast.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:22 PM
bran flakes are cheap and taste pretty decent with some frozen blueberries thrown in, and since I started working at a endoscopy center and started seeing pictures of colons, more fiber in my diet has been a priority.

That’s an exciting image, tallguy. Thanks for that.

“chorizo and egg breakfast taco” Clown
At work we have monthly potlucks. Some genius came up with the idea of a breakfast potluck (she won the Nobel Peace Prize for this idea). One gal is Mexican and brought in entirely not enough chorizo and eggs. I’d never had it before. Freaking Awesome Food Heaven. It jumped to #2 on all time best breakfasts, surplanting Eggs Benedict and behind the allmighty Biscuits and Gravy.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:26 PM
corn beef hash is #1 as far as breakfasts go in my book. Hot damn.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:27 PM
Western omlette, hash browns, bacon, and some juice, either OJ or apple. Best. Breakfast. Ever…or best drunk meal at 4am.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Corn Beef Hash is gross. It looks like someone shit in a skillet.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:30 PM
eggs on top of cornbeef hash on top of toast is breakfast perfection. Add some yellow grits made with cream and cheese, and you’ve got the perfect last meal…and trust me, it will be your last meal.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:31 PM
2 chorizo and egg tacos with sriracha sauce and 2 cups of coffee = beautiful shitsplosion the likes of which you have never seen
September 17th, 2008 at 10:32 PM
Best Breakfast = crepes. They’re like pancakes, but with less batter and more sugar.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:32 PM

C’mon, Henri – we’re talking American breakfasts here.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:34 PM
Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, although bagel with lox is the best on the go breafast.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:34 PM
I will let you go, Ricky. But first, I want you to say…”I… love… crepes.”

What is sriracha sauce? I’m a mere gringo that digs authentic Mexican food. Easy to do in KC, but when I go into the Mexican stores on Southwest Boulevard I am completely lost.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:42 PM
“hey don’t diss Canada”
As an American that strictly adheres to the Mario Chalmers training program, that was intended as a compliment.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:43 PM
KC just combined the world’s two greatest things in a comment: Mario Chalmers, and Canada.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:44 PM
KC-Get Cholula Sauce its bomb with mexican.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:45 PM
I thought crawfish and beer or Keisha Cole and Ashanti in a three-way were the world’s 2 greatest things?
September 17th, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Why did my last two comments disappear? Is that what happens when they need to be approved?
September 17th, 2008 at 10:48 PM
sriracha. not for pussies.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:48 PM
The Mario Chalmers training program worked for me, enough to get a partial athletic scholarship, for distance running. Further proof that it doesn’t do shit.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:49 PM
While I would take a threesome over being in Canada, it definitely definitely definitely would not involve Keisha Cole and Ashanti. Unless they ran to get me food in between takes.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Sriracha kicks ass. I have a bottle of Dave’s Insanity that I’m afraid to open. I had to sign a waiver when I bought it.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:50 PM
But a certain ex-WAG named Cole? I’d do that.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:50 PM
I had that shit when I worked at Firehouse subs. Its not as good as Cholula
September 17th, 2008 at 10:50 PM
blasphemy
September 17th, 2008 at 10:51 PM
“KC-Get Cholula Sauce its bomb with mexican.” Tampa Bo
Dude, Cholula is always in the house. I almost named my firstborn Cholula, but he ended being a boy. Can’t name a boy Cholulo.
Tabasco always tastes watered down. Dave’s is slightly overrated. Louisanna on the Red is good, but not really with Mexican food (like it on leftover pizza). I’m always on the hunt for flavorful spicy/hot sauces. And not that shit that is just hot for the sake of being hotter than hell. Anyhow, that’s why I was wondering what sriracha sauce was.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:53 PM

Thanks. I think that is the stuff they have at the Vietnamese joing I go to. The bottle looks familiar.

My buddy religiously pours BBQ sauce on slices of pizza. Seems weird.

B & G with the OE on the TOP.
Let me do my breakfast math Bagel and Grits with the Ole English on top.

haha. biscuits and gravy on top with over easy. my brother has this diner in NYC that he goes to where he knows all the funky ordering codes. it’s usually pretty funny when hungover.

grits, bacon, and scrambled eggs always shows me that my wife loves me…. Once a month.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:10 PM
FUCK THIS. All this food talk is making me furious I am going running in 15minutes. Fuck me.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:16 PM
Buckner, look out for cars. what do you think of the Shox? i’ve got a pair for basketball which i play twice a week. but my shins kill me afterwards. it’s probably not the shoes, it’s probably the extra 15 pounds i carry around.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:19 PM
benji – I rock the shox on the treadmill five times a week. I like them, but it’d be better if they weighed just a bit less.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:21 PM
@sanders: i usually rock adidas on the treadmill 4-5 days a week. i only feel soreness in my shins when running on the hardcourt. my shox are pretty light. they’re comfortable, i am just wondering if he can recommend something better.

New Balance is where its at for running. Although they still make my feet hurt, just like every other shoe.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:23 PM
I’ve never tried New Balance but I hear good things. I like the Nike trail series, though. Whenever I can actually make it to the outdoor track they’re great.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Thanks benji, cars aren’t much of a problem in my town. Enough side streets that have near no traffic this time of night.
And I hate to break it to ya guys, but the Shox are one of the worst shoes on the market, expecially for running. They push you onto your toes faster than intented, and give you inconsistend cushioning. And unless you’re perfectly neutral (you’re foot doesn’t roll in or out, otherwise known as over-pronating or supinating), they’re just bad news. You’re better off in the Pegasus in a Nike entry neutral running shoe. Only $85, but if you roll in (pronate) and want Nike, get the Structure Triax, $95.

thanks Al Bundy. do you work at a local shoe store or like Dick’s or something?
September 17th, 2008 at 11:27 PM
One thing is a must. You can only hoop in J’s. Or Pennys. The first Maestro is also acceptable.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:28 PM
I don’t know much as far as basketball shoes, except that often (except with Shox), you get what you pay for. The more they are, often, the more cushioning they have.
And like I said earlier, New Balance 700 series or better. We don’t carry anything less, the higher the number as far as NB goes, the more cushioning the shoe has.
What the best thing to do (of course I would say this since this is the kind of store I work in), is to go to a specialty running store so they can analyze your gait, your foot, and recommend a shoe. i.e. = Saucony is good for a wide foot, and so is NB and Brooks. Nike is narrow, so is Adidas and Mizuno. I know what too much stuff haha.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:28 PM
You can hoop in Converse
September 17th, 2008 at 11:29 PM
Yeah, I work at Haddonfield Running Company, specialty running store. Our job is to fit runners and walkers for shoes. I’ve been doing it during summers and winter breaks for 3 years, so I have accumilated a lotta knowledge.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Asics man, myself. I’ve got fat feet and high arches. I can’t wear Nike or Addidas. Never tried the NB.
We need to reread this thread tomorrow morning. We’ve touched on and discussed heavily, Running Shoes, Breakfast, Hot Sause, Mexican Food, and I think a bunch of other stuff until it got to Baseball.

You can hoop in Starbury’s.
By can I mean have to. One year for intramural ball we decided to go with everyone picking up a pair of Starbury’s. That did not work out so well for the feet.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:33 PM
Buck, I have kind of flat feet. What say you?
September 17th, 2008 at 11:36 PM
anyone see that dudes fat swollen lip on the Challenge tonight? Crazy shit.
September 17th, 2008 at 11:37 PM
Brooks is good, look at the Dyad (neutral), and the Asics Evolution is solid. Maybe the Asics 2130. Both of them are for pronaters. Saucony is wide, but has a lot of arch.
