So (Snooze), About Those Pennant (Snooze) Races …
Baseball September 23rd. 2008, 6:15pm
Just can’t get excited about the Mets meltdown – it’s more of a global warming thaw, completely devoid of excitement; they’ll be in the postseason, anyway – or the struggle between the Twins and White Sox in the AL East. No offense to either of those two teams, but there’s nothing sexy at all about them. Other than Gavin Floyd’s 16-8 mark, which essentially is the only thing we’ve been right about dating back to the preseason, their series that begins tonight lacks the drop-what-you’re-doing-and-track-the-game-on-yahoo feel of a crucial, late-season showdown.
(Aside: As for our second half predictions, don’t dwell on the negative – Hamilton cooled, the Indians rallied – hey, two-and-half out of eight isn’t bad!)
We’re over the end of Yankee Stadium, and as amusing as the Nationals’ front office struggles are, that’s a dull franchise. Due to massive injuries, we’ve barely checked our fantasy roster for the last six weeks.
We thought the D-Backs were World Series bound, but barring a late rally this week, that ain’t happening. If the season ended today, there would, however, be two sweet first-round matchups: Red Sox-Angels and Cubs-Mets. Assuming we understand the playoff breakdown. (This is the part where you scream – you don’t! – and we make adjustments.)
While we’re rambling about baseball, does anyone know why video of this David Justice homer isn’t on the web? We had just moved to NY and vividly remember this round-tripper (almost certain he hit it to the black seats in dead center) because the city was buzzing all night and it was a great time to be young, a Yankees fan, and partying in NYC. Sorry to get all nostalgic, but take our word for it – it was cool.

I just got a call about going to the Phillies’ playoff game Wednesday. No idea how I’m gonna swing it with work since I’m taking off early Friday for another Phillies game / drinking excessively.

Way to hype up the post.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:22 PM
@ Billy: Easy. Quit your job.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:23 PM
Sadly, not an option, since my job is easy, cushy, I’m overpaid for what I do, and it’s 100 yards from my house. But, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Somebody has to be able to switch shifts.

All this post proves is you’re not a fan of baseball, you’re a fan of a few ’sexy’ teams. Congratulations.
For those of us who actually like baseball (as well as have a favorite team), the fact that there are five races that are still alive with a week to go is exciting. Technically it’s six, but I’m discounting the AL wildcard because the Red Sox magic number for that spot is one.
AL Central, AL East, NL East, NL West, NL Wildcard

I wish I could take that little kids hat off his head and take a dump in it. As a native Buffalonian (the GOOD part of New York state) who now lives in South Florida, where all the obnoxious asswipes from the NY/NJ cesspool have moved to (you know, Johnny Bagadonuts Rockaway Beach, Vinnie from Bayonne), I am VERY sick of ALL things NYC.
/Game on

Are you in a Union or something?
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:33 PM
Weak excuse, there are lots of guys who get PT during this part of the season, and play well, who sit on the waiver wire, mostly because they are not big names. Why even hold onto an injured guy unless its a keeper league? You would not be missing Crawford if you had hopped on the Soo Choo train.

Nah, I work at a specialty running store. But I’m supposed to work 10am-7pm that day. I have off the next day, so I should be able to find somebody to switch with me.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:36 PM
And the end of this season is fantastic. No Yankees, couple of good races, and potential of another Mets collapse?!? Not to mention the last month of the Twins and ChiSox! I’m legit excited. Granted I’d be twice as excited if the O’s were in the mix, but I can’t have it all.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:38 PM
What is the definition of a specialty running store?
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:40 PM
The AL East is only a technicality as well, since both teams are in the playoffs.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:42 PM
We sell all things running related (and technically, walking as well, but we gear towards runners). Say a person comes in with foot problems, I watch them walk barefoot, watch how their feet and ankles move and land, and the shape of their feet and arches, and recommend shoes based on that info. And I’m full of mostly useless info on running injury remedies and such. It’s a sweet job as a collegiate athlete looking for beer money.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:46 PM
Damn I could use a store like that. I can never tell if I have the right kind of running shoes.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:48 PM
You make up half the people that come in here daily. Too bad you’re in lovely Flint and not in Haddonfield, NJ. I could hook you up.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:49 PM
I don’t care if this makes me a bad person but I thought that picture was hysterical
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:52 PM
I don’t care if this makes me a bad person but I’d love to beat George Steinbrenner’s ass.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:54 PM
Miniya is getting a 4 year extension must have been for the way he handled firing willie randoplph
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:02 PM
How is this a mets collapse anyway? They’re 10 and 10 in September and the Phillies have just played better than them. People love to throw around the word collapse
Last year the mets collapsed, this year their bullpen has done them in.

I’ve always used Shox but I feel like this last pair isn’t doing the job.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:18 PM
Shox are way too heavy for me to run in.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:23 PM
How do I say this without being unfair and hypercritical?
This post is new york centric and openly retarded. Nice job though.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:29 PM
Shox are awful. Stay away from Shox. If you like Nike and wanna stay relatively inexpensive, go with the Pegasus ($85) if you’re neutral and the Structure Triax ($95) if you over-pronate.
This mimics a post I hate last week, weird.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:34 PM
Haha yeah Buck I remember that one. I’ll do anything to take my mind off the Twins/Sox series right now. If I could put myself in a 3 day coma I’d do it no questions asked.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:52 PM
No way, Shox are great for running. Well, I did have one pair where the left shock broke off mid-stride on a treadmill.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Buckner – Are there any shoes that can guard against shin splints? I was a 400/800 runner in college and have had them ever since when I try and run on treadmills. I try and get to the outdoor track when I can, but living in IL that won’t be for much longer. I know there are other forms of indoor cardio, but I really like running but can’t do more than two miles at a time on the treadmill without pain shooting up my tibias. Sorry for the TMI, but you seem to be the expert.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:25 PM
ben, what is your favorite team?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:32 PM
TBL you down for some madden?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:35 PM
goddamn TBL, you had to pick up mendenhall, huh. my team is fucking horrible, wierd b/c 3-0 in other 2 leagues. horseshit.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:37 PM
I have the same shin splint problems, doesn’t happen every time I run though. Generally only if I do medium distance 3 or 4 days in a row.
I feel like my form is off in these Shox.
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:46 PM
Javy Vasquez….coming up small in big spots since……well, forever.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:04 PM
michael clayton just started on one of the HBO channels. anyone seen it?
no can do on the Madden, Tampa. played my cousin earlier today, and i can’t be playing too much.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:06 PM
It’s pretty good, TBL. I normally don’t care for Clooney in a “serious” role….but it’s pretty good. Shouldn’t have been nominated, however.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:13 PM
SS – Clooney’s pretty bad-ass already.
Loser: “Is that the police?”
Clooney: “No. They don’t call.”
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:17 PM
When did the Twins and White Sox move to the AL East? Or am I reading impaired?
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:49 PM
Michael Clayton was a good movie. Tom Wilkinson is a riot.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:30 PM
I’ve been meaning to watch it but have yet to get around to it. I’ve heard good things.
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:32 PM
You know this post is full of shit because it has The Post as it’s image. Why don’t you just make the headline “Don’t Read”
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:45 PM
this movie’s much better than ‘good’
awesome, actually
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:50 PM
“don’t you know who I am?”
LOL
CLooney went there

September 23rd, 2008 at 10:50 PM
Go Twins!
September 23rd, 2008 at 11:08 PM
Ozzie Guillen was right…Javy Vasquez sucks
September 24th, 2008 at 1:06 AM
Oh oh…TBL is going to lead off the Round-Up tomorrow with “I am Shiva, the God of Death!”
September 24th, 2008 at 7:59 AM
You sure about that?
