Which Media Members Turned into Fans and Scooped Up Dirt at Yankee Stadium?
Media Gossip/Musings September 24th. 2008, 3:00pm
Surely somebody knows the answer. Somebody had to have seen something. If Lupica showed up wearing a tool belt, we’d like to hear about it. We’re fairly confident in assuming that if Suzyn Waldman flips out over the return of Roger Clemens, or cries after Joe Torre’s final game (35 seconds in), she definitely left the House Ruth built with at least one garbagebag full of artifacts.
[And seriously ... DIRT? Scooping up DIRT from Yankee Stadium? We're embarrassed for the fans. That's weak on an epic scale.]

No, what’s weak is buying dirt from Steiner Sports.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:04 PM
Even weaker…selling the dirt to Steiner Sports.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:05 PM
Fuck the Yankees and Jeffrey Maier. Fucking douche.

Amen brother.

Even weaker…..writing a column about media members collecting dirt. There is no bigger waste of space in this universe than the part of the paper or the world wide web used to print Sports Media Watcher Columns. Thank you Phil Mushnick.

I wish I could have taken a dump in that dirt first. God, I HATE the Yankees and all their self-important fans and media slurpers!
September 24th, 2008 at 3:07 PM
I’d rather have dirt than paint chips.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:07 PM
i remember the last game at Cleveland Municipal stadium…people were crowbaring entire rows of seats and taking them home..fans were showing up with screwdrivers and wrenches
September 24th, 2008 at 3:09 PM
I would have stolen Jeffrey Maier…in the face.

The Baltimore Orioles: One Washington Nationals 80 win season away from being totally irrelevant in the Washington/Baltimore Region.

The Baltimore Orioles: A helluva lot closer to being competitive than the Nats, so that doesn’t concern me.

Two innacuracies. First, Baltimore area fans give a crap about the Nationls. Second, the Nationals aren’t ever winning 80 games.

Best comment of the day. No more defensive fan base that I have had personal experience with than the O’s.

You’re a Terps basketball fan, look in the mirror.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
We’re an angry and frustrated people. Look what Peter Angelos has done to us.

1. You (and O’s fan?) are the first to make a comment on the nats almost daily.
2. Enjoy the AL East, a couple good drafts and the eventual firing of Bowden = 80 wins.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Dammit, cbh. Not cool haha.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Terp hoops fans are defensive? I think after the last four years we understand our place in the basketball universe. Unlink other D.C. area fan bases who luck into a final four and now have a sense of entitlement.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:17 PM
I still have dirt from the last field I ever played competitive ball on. Its in the makers mark bottle that I drank that night
September 24th, 2008 at 3:18 PM
Sterlin read that Washington Times article on the Nats from yesterday then talk to me.
Lucked into, yes beating 3 major programs, one of whom had 4 NBA players on it was complete luck.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:19 PM
I so badly want the Terps and Gary Williams to grow some balls and come play Mason at the Patriot Center.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:20 PM
My family has all 16 of their seats from old Cleveland Municipal. What a site that day was. And somewhere, a couple of houses ago, I’m sure my piece of turf from Ohio Stadium still grows from when Cooper finally ended his drought in 1994.

Back in 97 or so, ND redid something with their stadium and one of my buddies who is a big fan and went to the final game. After the game he went onfield and took a giant chunk of sod. Brought back home and started growing it out of a pot. Irish fans are weird.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:21 PM
I actually wish the Terps would work on local rivalries more. Fridge is trying to do that for football, why not basketbal? Although, I heard from my dad that Terps-Georgetown used to get wicked ugly.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:23 PM
I actually was give dirt from the movie set of field of dreams as a gift. No clue what happened to it.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:24 PM
I would want Gary to do that as well. I have been to three CAA stadiums for conference games and the CAA tourney (Jammin on the James!!) They are like a funeral.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:25 PM
/would be a whole lot cooler if he did
September 24th, 2008 at 3:26 PM
I have Fenway dirt from when I saw Springsteen there… it’s very special dirt dammit!!
September 24th, 2008 at 3:26 PM
The Terps/Gtown thing stems from Gary and Papa Thompson being bitter enemies from what I had read. Not sure if there is truth to it, but it could be lucrative, although we would have to play at the Verizon Center and I think the only team we ever beat there was George Mason
September 24th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
That may be true immediately in Baltimore proper and Baltimore County, but when you’re talking Northern Virginia, DC, Montgomery County, PG County and Southern Maryland, you’re in trouble.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Hey where’s the roundup? Apparantly the Pres. debate for this friday is gonna be cancelled?
September 24th, 2008 at 3:29 PM
I have Joe Dirt.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:30 PM
although we would have to play at the Verizon Center and I think the only team we ever beat there was George Mason
I don’t think we played Maryland there. We had to go to you guys a few years ago, that is the only time I remember playing you. Also, in Boise in the NCAA’s.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
i did the same thing the yr osu beat ND at the shoe in 95
September 24th, 2008 at 3:35 PM
We played you guys in the BB&T like 5 years ago and beat ya. I think we have won something like 3 out of 15 games in the building this decade.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:37 PM
Joe Smith had his coming out party for Maryland when he outplayed Othella Harrington and the Terps beat G’town back in the 90’s, if I remember correctly.
September 24th, 2008 at 3:43 PM
You are correct Sterlin, BB&T has been a house of horrors from Mason, aside from the year we got to destroy American.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:18 PM
Ah Sterlin, what good drafts have the Nats had? I count one, featuring Ryan Zimmerman. Other than that, nada. The Nats are on the short list of worst run franchises in baseball. The Orioles, on the other hand, have the best prospect in the game.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Never said they had good drafts, but was thinking going forward. True, they suck as currently constructed, both on and off the field.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Fetch, will Weiter be the O’s starting catcher on Opening Day in 2009?
September 24th, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Ah I see, a couple good drafts was in future tense. My mistake. I get a little wound up about the draft.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:42 PM
Couple that with the fact my major point is that there are fewer roadblocks in the nats way (NL < AL)
September 24th, 2008 at 4:44 PM
That’s true Sterlin. Although as the Rays proved if you assemble enough young talent you can make the playoffs, even in the AL East.
cbh- There’s talk of it. I personally don’t think he will be, but it wouldn’t surprise me either. I think it will be in June or thereabouts to save them a year of arbitration/free agency.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:45 PM
really? i find the sports media columns 90% more interesting than game stories and notebook items. but hey, that’s just me.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:52 PM
Thanks for the knowledge fetch, really ready to see the team get rid of Hernandez.
September 24th, 2008 at 4:55 PM
TBL – That’s because members and former members of the media care about our peers. I agree that the sports pages should be left for things relating to the teams, especially with room on the pages shrinking so badly. Now, Sports Media Watcher Columns are totally great for the internet, since you’re not actually wasting any space.

I stayed away from buying an authentic Markakis jersey solely cuz I’m gonna buy a Weiters one when he gets here. The future is bright, gentlemen. Wouldn’t have said that 18months ago, MacPhail is a genius. My dad went to college with him, really wish he worked on being friends with that guy.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:16 PM
I almost bought a Tejada jersey a few years ago, then a few months later he started bitching so I went with the old standby of getting a jersey without a name on the back.
Wish I had thought twice before I bought that Alex Smith jersey after he had a half decent season in 06.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Ouch. I have a Roberts jersey (and roughly 12 Ripken jerseys) that I got on eBay for like $30. That’s where I buy jerseys now, cuz one always slips by for peanuts.
I just scored my dad a Mitchell & Ness Brooks Robinson jersey (his childhood hero) for $150 on eBay. I’ll never top that birthday gift for him.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Yeah it hurt, eBay is definitely a great place to get jerseys. Got a Frank Gore authentic off of there for 50 bucks.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:28 PM
See, that’s how ya gotta do it. I’m gonna buy a Flacco jersey in the near future, that’s my next major purpose. That or an Ed Reed jersey, but Flacco is from about a mile away from where I’m from…and 23.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:29 PM
I meant purchase.
September 24th, 2008 at 6:12 PM
@Billy Buck: I got a #21 McGahee jersey in red/white and blue you can have. Just has a few holes where the knife “slipped” into it
GO BILLS!
September 24th, 2008 at 6:29 PM
I think I might pass hahahahaha.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:38 PM
I have a fucking Ricky Williams Saints jersey that I paid my own fucking money for! I also have a Jim Everett throwback jersey that I “won” by winning my fantasy football league in 2004. Concidently, that was the last year I played fantasy football.
