Chaos in Corvallis: Oregon State 27, No. 1 USC 21
College Football September 26th. 2008, 9:00am
We all should have seen this coming: Since Ohio State traveled west two weeks ago and got dismembered by the Trojans, do you know what the biggest USC story being force-fed to the public has been? How USC could finish undefeated and not play for the National title because the Pac-10 is rotten enough to make the computers hold their nose. (That link is just one example; but we heard or read about this scenario dozens of places.)
Which is part of the beauty of college football. After taking in an above-average Office season opener, we familiarized ourselves with this Jacquizz Rodgers fellow. He’s a diminutive freshman who was probably at his senior prom four months ago. Last night, he carved up a defense that will probably send five players into the NFL. It was the kind of electrifying performance (36 carries, 187 yards; depending on where you do your research, he’s either 5-foot-6 or 5-7, and between 185-200 lbs) to send you googling his name: He’s the all-time touchdown leader in Texas football history, USC didn’t recruit him, he had a tough family life (father in prison?), and Erin Andrews’ horse-collared him last night to secure an interview before bedlam engulfed the field. Rodgers’ brother, sophomore WR James, caught two TD passes as well.
Wondering where the USC bashing is? Decided to let Oregon State fans wallow in the win for a few hours before we took a few shots at the choking Trojan frauds.
National title big picture? Georgia’s still got at least four ranked opponents on the schedule, ditto for Oklahoma. Florida has three more against Top 25 teams, and if Penn State gets by Illinois in Happy Valley this weekend, the Nittany Lions’ name will surely surface as a contender (even though they travel to Wisconsin and Ohio State). But the door certainly isn’t shut on the Trojans, who play no more ranked opponents. It’s only September, but if Ohio State and USC run the table, and the SEC teams beat up on each other and Oklahoma chokes once or twice and BYU loses … ugh, we don’t even want to think about it.

Jacquizz Rodgers was amazing last night. What a performance by that freshman. He ran all over that defense
September 26th, 2008 at 9:08 AM
FRAUDS!
September 26th, 2008 at 9:09 AM
Can we NOW stop hearing about who will be playing in the national title game until mid-November, please?
It would best serve ESPN/ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC (never mind, they don’t have any teams that would come close) to refrain from discussing who will be playing in the title game. Instead, they should be focusing their time on the great (and even good) games played each week.
/Tired of hearing National Title talk in September
//GREAT game by Oregon State… no just the RB with the great name!
September 26th, 2008 at 9:09 AM
yea, im wondering…seeing as it was halftime when the OSU (the real one) bashing started.
just kidding…that was an awesome game. it looked as if jacquizz was just too small for USC to see and did a great job hiding behind blockers and sliding out of tackles. it was fuckin’ great.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:10 AM
Florida will be the new #1 after this weekend.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:11 AM
@spencer- did you notice the zone blocking that tOSU was using last night on them? It worked so well
September 26th, 2008 at 9:11 AM
Penn State has to be happy about this
September 26th, 2008 at 9:12 AM
PSU didn’t just beat Oregon State they dismantled them. If memory servers correct it was 35-3 with 10 min left in the 2nd quarter.
OSU had bad tackling, horrible D-Line play, bad Oline, and that Jiz (great name mom) Rogers played out of his mind.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:12 AM
where is the fun in that? LSU vs Oklahoma
September 26th, 2008 at 9:14 AM
Yessiree
September 26th, 2008 at 9:14 AM
If only Penn State played a good team OOC…
September 26th, 2008 at 9:16 AM
Carson Palmer thinks this is all Chad Johnson’s fault.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:16 AM
irish…yea, it was the perfect system to let jacquizz cut back and get lost amongst the OL, fantastic. and the WR blocking schemes on motion was fantastic as well, even if the WR just got in the way, it was enough to seal off griffen and matthews and let jacquizz do his thing.
USC’s DT’s and rey rey were useless for most of the game…
September 26th, 2008 at 9:17 AM
If Oregon State can do it, so can Arkansas.
GO HOGS.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:17 AM
eh, they’ll still lose in columbus and to michigan (like always).
/just kidding, don’t jump down my throat…wanted to get a jab in
September 26th, 2008 at 9:18 AM
Don’t do us like that, irish.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:18 AM
@spencer- i know you are a fan of line play, thats why i asked. the tOSU was just breaking your balls
September 26th, 2008 at 9:20 AM
irish, Ohio State did too much sideways shit, that dumb bubble screen, tosses, USC is too fast for that. Oregon St just ran it right down their throat and it worked.
And Spence, this is the year we finally beat those uppity Mich bastards, its now or never. TP will have some growing pains when he sees a real defense.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:20 AM
irish…i figured. not much you can say back when your team decides to start todd boeckman against the “best” team in the country.
i dont know if i love the upset or hate it (rose bowl rematch…ugh…USC’ll be ready for that one…yay)…ok, i love it.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:21 AM
coop…USC wasn’t a real defense?
and yes, PSU is going to DESTROY michigan. i can’t wait till this weekend to see Wisky take it to them.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:23 AM
Seems to me TP played and you only had 3 points, I’ll take that.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:24 AM
strange feeling this has Michigan with the upset all over it.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:26 AM
This isn’t about tOSU, it’s about OSU.
Amazing upset two years in a row against USC. The Stanford one was probably more improbable, but this one came out of nowhere as well. It really is amazing how the Trojans play down to their Pac-10 competition so often. That’s why they play the games. It’s football. No team is invincible.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:26 AM
coop…that was boeckman’s fault. that asshole, boeckman.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:27 AM

September 26th, 2008 at 9:30 AM
Sean Jean…i dunno if it’s playing down to their competition, it’s just that all the conference teams know each other so well, that games are always going to be closer. sure the talent gap is abyss-like, but all the pac-10 teams know what USC is going to throw out there and they know how to attack it.
whether or not they execute is a different story.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:30 AM
you’re not kidding nick. you love that old man. Countdown down to 32 days
Jesse Palmer is TBL’s hero
September 26th, 2008 at 9:31 AM
Pete Carrol is a great cheerleader.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:31 AM
when did i miss this?

September 26th, 2008 at 9:32 AM
When is the last time that PSU beat Michigan, hasn’t been over ten years? Or is that just in Ann Arbor
September 26th, 2008 at 9:33 AM
when he was The Bachelor. you know TBL watches that shit too.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:35 AM
spence: True, there is some element to that as well, but if you saw the game last night, USC really made tons of mistakes. I consider that playing down to the competition.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:35 AM
I read one day that TBL admired Jesse Palmers fauxhawk(sp?)look
September 26th, 2008 at 9:35 AM
Hakeem – Last won in Michigan in 94. We won at home a year or 2 later (game highlighted by a fake field goal to clinch it) in a snow/ice game, and that’s it.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:37 AM
Those short ass ties that Jesse Palmer wears are pretty obnoxious.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:38 AM
Sean Jean…yep, i agree, but shouldn’t we expect a game like this per year from them by now? all the big, OOC games they play, there isn’t a school in the country that can hang (sans VY), but they lose to the shitty pac-10 schools (well, are there any other pac-10 schools taht aren’t shitty?) at least once per year…focus USC!
September 26th, 2008 at 9:38 AM
when he was The Bachelor. you know TBL watches that shit too.
HA! TBLs Television taste amazes me but if you catch him on here while hes watching it he gets you into it. He showed me that tranny model fighting is fun to watch.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:40 AM
Roeth, I was like 15 and went to that snow/ice game, it was awesome.
Anyone know anything about Malaluga’s knee, that didn’t look good. Could end up costing him a couple million.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:46 AM
Someone explain all of the Peen State love going on out there. They’ve played no one out of conference, and the Big 1(1)0 is just meh this year.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:48 AM
they always have a good D, and now their offense is looking great. they have an awesome OL, and a versatile stable of QB’s and are just rolling.
that said…they still have to beat OSU, Wisky and Michigan (just because they have a losing streak), but PSU is TOUGH this year.
im just glad OSU gets to face them in columbus.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:49 AM
USC doesn’t consider Oregon State “no one.”
September 26th, 2008 at 9:50 AM
I love all the hypos where people wonder what USC would do if they played in the SEC…when the truth of the matter is that it doesn’t matter because shitty teams in the Pac 10 already have their number.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:50 AM
The game was awesome last night, USC didn’t look like the same team that beat the Buckeyes. Lots of dumb ass penalties and poor tackling coat them that game.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:51 AM
Hawkeye…apparently Oregon State is SOMEONE out of conference. And they destroyed them. That’s the entire point, if you had bothered to read.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:52 AM
To be honest I think USC would be a good fit in the SEC. They have the speed size and the depth to compete.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:52 AM
LSU Tigers >>>> Auburn Tigers
September 26th, 2008 at 9:53 AM
They did the best they could with out-of-conference. When we signed the home and home with Syracuse about 5/6 years ago, SU was coming off 3-straight 10 win seasons. Can’t help it they suck now. After seeing they sucked, I gived Curley/PSU some credit for kicking Arkansas St. off the schedule and replacing them with OSU, coming off 2 bowl seasons with 9 and 10 wins.
Spence has it right. Our OL has been phenomenal, and our DL has been dominating despite its lack of depth and suspensions. Our weakest link is our young LB corp and unproven QBs, but they’ve been steady so far.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:53 AM
+1 Jay V
September 26th, 2008 at 9:55 AM
they’d be a terrible fit in the SEC. USC is in california.
/hypotheticals be damned
September 26th, 2008 at 9:56 AM
Oregon St played out of their minds last night, USC was on cruise control. It is that simple. The worst thing about this is Penn St gets credibility. I am really pulling for the Zookers now.
@jb49ers – Except they are on the west coast.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:56 AM
They’d be a terrible fit in the SEC, USC fans have all their teeth and can read.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:57 AM
I resent that comment; I can read.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:58 AM
plus 2 spence and cgb
September 26th, 2008 at 9:58 AM
mizerle…stop fooling yourself, you can’t read.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:59 AM
dammit! I thought I was foolin’ everybody else too.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Is this bad simply because you don’t like PSU, or is it more of a Big Ten sucks kind of thing?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Jacquizz Rodgers is a miniature Barry Sanders.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Someone needs to tell Jizz Rodgers to take his helmet off during interviews.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:01 AM
I will jump on the PSU love bandwagon. They are putting up huge numbers every week. I don’t care who you are playing, in today’s game, that doesn’t happen as often as it used to. They look very consistent thus far, and completely dominated this same OSU team that just beat the #1 most invincible team in the country (or so says ESPN).
September 26th, 2008 at 10:02 AM
I like dem purrty pikturs on that web thang.

Jacquizz Rodgers is a miniature Barry Sanders
I dont know about all that. Maybe Maurice Jones Drew, imo
September 26th, 2008 at 10:08 AM
@Roethlishotdog
I don’t like the Big Ten or Penn St (they screw me out of watching VT in CT). But that is not why I think it is bad. The ESPN hype machine is going to use the transitive rule of college football Ws to say Penn St is legit. PSU > Oregon St > USC does not imply PSU > USC. This may be there year but I’de rather hear about all Paterno old stories after the actually beat someone of merit.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:14 AM
why hate a team because you don’t have espn gameplan?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Also, on another note, I think Corvalis is a cool sounding name for a city. Especially one where you are traveling to play a football game. Sounds very ominous.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:18 AM
i wouldnt be surprised to hear some “which OSU is better: Oregon or Ohio State?” bullshit.
and if anyone says it’s the State University of the Oregon persuausion, im coming to your house with an axe and going all American Psycho.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:27 AM
@jimmy
I actually bought GamePlan for the VT GT game and it was still grayed out. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with the cable company only for them to tell me it was “technical reasons” why it wouldn’t come through. As for Saturday night’s game it is on ABC which ESPN is claiming is not a gameplan game.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:29 AM
I cannot believe USC lost last night…still trying to figure out how that happened. I think this makes the penn state-wisconsin game (I assume they play one another) massive for the Big 10. The only problem is if OSU knocks off each of them it will leave the Big 10 out of the BCS title game because if USC wins out (still highly likely) OSU zero chance going to the big game over USC.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Greenie was trying to make a case of why Ohio State should go over USC if they each lost just one game, retarded.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:31 AM
So both UGA and OU are going to lose at home?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:36 AM
Gods…true story about OSU and USC. i think they’re both out of the NC picture, but at the same time, is a rose bowl rematch that outlandish?
even if there is a rematch, it’ll be with Terrelle Pryor and a healthy beanie…should be a USC ass-whooping.
USC shouldn’t sniff the NC game, even if a SEC team has the same record and OU loses to Leach Tech or Texas. i’m sorry, but regardless of how worldly-great they were against my buckeyes, a loss to a 3rd week, 2 loss team is indefensible.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:38 AM
I don’t think USC is out of the NC picture. They lost early and I don’t think two teams go undefeated this year.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:44 AM
oh, and just so i make it clear…im saying USC will roll.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:46 AM
If you think USC (or OSU for that matter) is out of the NC picture, I don’t know where you have been the past 10 years.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:46 AM
cgb…i agree, but Oklahoma will most likely only have one or two losses, and there’s going to be an SEC team in the picture, even if they have two losses, they’ll be of a higher quality than Oregon state. hell, even Mizzou might jump up there if they can beat Okla in the b12 champ game. PSU looks incredibly strong in the b10 and wisky could run the table, just saying.
it’s going to be an uphill climb for USC.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Not sure about that…the problem with Carroll (and it is a problem) is that he does not get his teams motivated to play bad teams. Aside from Texas in the title game USC does not lose the “big games” but they seem to fall short in at least one game a year that they have no business losing to. I think if they played OSU again in Pasadena I’d take them by 7.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Sean Jean…OSU is out of the picture. they could shut out every single team and score 49 pts per game and they’d still be in the rose bowl come january. that USC loss was the death knoll.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Gods…it was probably good i made myself clear after the fact. i agree that USC would probably beat OSU by at least a TD.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
OSU is done due to what has happened the last 3 big games they’ve played. Normally I would agree with you but the current history of OSU will dictate otherwise. As for USC: I think they are still in it (sadly) because the SEC teams will beat each other which will propell USC closer to #1 or #2.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Got it. After I re-read your post I thought I got it mized up.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Unfortunately, that ain’t gonna happen. Besides, what would Todd McShay and Trevor Matich have to talk about for three months?
I feel the same way about the phrase “if the playoffs started today…”, btw.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Spence: You have no idea how much I want to believe you (I do), and I don’t know if you are doing some reverse psychology voodoo, but have you not watched football the past decade? An early loss means nothing if all the teams ahead of you lose and you run the table. Just ask OSU last year when they didn’t even lose early in the season.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
are you saying mizerle can’t read because he’s and SEC fan? i think you are…and i agree…ESSSSSSS EEEEEEEEEEE SEEEEE SPEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!
September 26th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
I actually meant to hit “x” and in haste mis-typed.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:58 AM
Sean Jean…no, it’s not voodoo, it’s just looking at things objectively. i look at 2008 OSU as 2007 VT, a relatively strong team in a relatively weak conference that gets shellacked by a national power on the road in an extremely hostile environment. you can overcome an early loss, just not an early beat down.
even after LSU lost to weaker teams like Arkansas and Kentucky, they still got the benefit of having a much harder schedule, and i dont think that, even if OSU beats Wisky and PSU, that it’ll be enought.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:59 AM
gods…it wouldve been funnier if you were making fun of mizerle. we all wouldve had a wonderful laugh at his expense.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:59 AM
I agree with your logic, but that’s just it: The BCS lacks logic.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:13 AM
that’s what she said.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:14 AM
The only title TOSU might earn this year is the coveted “Is anyone playing better football than this team” honor, bestowed annually to a hot team at the end of the season. (Like USC in 2002).
September 26th, 2008 at 11:16 AM
we don’t already do that every day? I sure do…
September 26th, 2008 at 11:18 AM
what? No jokes about Erin Andrews and Beavers?
September 26th, 2008 at 11:22 AM
mizerle…you weren’t too quick to pick up on that one.
/you have no SEC speed
September 26th, 2008 at 11:26 AM
yeah, got stuck in a short meeting. meetings definitely interrupt my commenting something fierce.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:27 AM
OSU 27, USC 21 / USC 35, tOSU 3 / PSUS 45, OSU 14
So it looks like the Buckeyes should lose to PSU somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-17? Suhweet…

September 26th, 2008 at 11:45 AM
If VT didnt choke against BC the first time around they would have been in the NC game and would have been embarrassed.
September 26th, 2008 at 12:29 PM
The thing that I can’t believe that no one has mentioned yet is that in the ORST/USC, USC/tOSU, PSU/ORST troika of games that the home team won each game. If you those games were played at the other team’s house would the results have been the same? Doesn’t ORST beat USC? Probably not. Does PSU beat ORST? Likely, but it wouldn’t have been by 30+ points either.
