For all his faults as an injury-prone player, J.D. Drew has had some big hits in his day. Last night, Drew corked a two-run homer off Francisco Rodriguez in the 9th to give the Red Sox a 7-5 win and a 2-0 lead in the ALDS. It wasn’t the first time Drew hit a big-time home run off a big-time pitcher. In the 2001 NLDS, Drew hit an 8th inning homer off Curt Schilling to snap Schilling’s shutout and force a 1-1 tie. The Diamondbacks went on to win with two outs in the 9th to take the series, but Drew’s homer gave the Cardinals a real chance to take the series.

During Game 6 of the ‘07 ALCS, Drew hit a grand slam off Fausto Carmona in the first inning to set the tone for the rest of the series. And just three months ago, Drew hit a two-run homer off Edinson Volquez in the 7th inning of the All Star game. The AL would eventually win 4-3, which could actually prove to be important for the Sox going forward.

And in the event you haven’t watched TV or picked up a newspaper, the Rays took a 2-0 lead in their series with a 6-2 victory
