Top Shelf: Red Wings Raise the Banner, Then Lose.
NHL October 10th. 2008, 10:00am
Lee Diekemper on the night in hockey.
Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2: The Wings celebrated the raising of their 11th Stanley Cup banner by losing. To the lowly Leafs, no less. Two unassisted Leafs goals and a Paul Kubina power play goal, doomed Detroit.
Bruins 5, Avalanche 4: David Krejci’s game-winner came with just over two minutes left in regulation. Missing almost a year with a concussion, Patrice Bergeron had an assist. Losing to the Bruins feels like a concussion.
Sharks 4, Ducks 1: It appears the offseason moves have paid off for the Sharks. Newly-acquired defensemen Rob Blake and Dan Boyle combined for three assists. Has Jonathan Cheechoo returned to his 2006 form? He had two goals.
Canucks 6, Flames 0: Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo turned away 25 shots for the shutout while teammate Alex Burrows had a pair of goals. Somebody wake up Miikka Kiprusoff and kindly inform him the regular season has begun.

October 10th, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Never heard of it.

The Red Wings are a fucking disappointment…the season is doomed..it’s over..no reason to follow the rest of the season..OVERRATED clap clap clapclap clap…

A year later, I still think this should have been called “The Five Hole”

I love that Lee is using the term “doomed” for the first game of the season. The Wings were out on the ice for 45 minutes for the banner ceremony, I doubt their heads were in the game.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:11 AM
no excuses SG. they lost. but things will be a-ok.

And the excuses start.
Stock a fork in them. They’re DOA.

Stick*

The NHL season opens just in time to save ESPN from boring baseball coverage.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:12 AM
The banner ceremony should be no excuse for losing to the Leafs.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Oh, and by the way, the Leafs were out there for the banner ceremony as well… Ron Wilson made the team watch it from the bench. It clearly had more of an effect on the Leafs.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Stock up on forks for sticking in them.

Thanks clown. Makes more sense.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:19 AM
@irish: Nice. Let’s get this thread off of hoc-key? and onto more important issues, like someone being stuck a toilet.
+1
October 10th, 2008 at 10:20 AM
Irish that is gross.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:20 AM
being stuck on a toilet > watching hockey, eh?
October 10th, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I tried Nick

Second time this year! What the fuck! This asshole must spend a hundred bucks a week on scratchers easy.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:26 AM
and he wears a mohawk CRM
October 10th, 2008 at 10:26 AM
i hope the penguins dont have a ceremony tomorrow for the division and conference banners, just put them up and mention them
October 10th, 2008 at 10:28 AM
This is hockey. Like Basketball or Baseball, 1 loss doesn’t mean much.
Unlike college football…where 1 loss means your season is done…unless everyone else loses.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:28 AM
and he wears a mohawk CRM
Rays fan?
October 10th, 2008 at 10:29 AM
i was just messin w/ CRM
October 10th, 2008 at 10:31 AM
I know that teams do, but you shouldn’t put up banners for anything less than the Stanley Cup.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Seriously though, I guarantee winning the lotto is this guy’s plan for earning income. However, I can’t believe someone that lucky is dating a toilet person.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:33 AM
he probably kicked her to the curb after she got off the toilet

Toilet people are gross

So the Avs decided to trade their defense for an offense in the offseason. I like Granato’s new style (up tempo) it fits the team well, but they still have to be able to shore up their own zone.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:38 AM
.
exactly.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:38 AM
I hope they do.. because I could mock Pens fans relentlessly…
October 10th, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Agreed, no one cares about who won the division or came in 2nd place. At least it’s not as pathetic as the Verizon Center in D.C., whose rafters are full of “WNBA Attendance Champions” banners.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:44 AM
I disagree. you can raise banners for division, and conference championships, but they should be smaller and less flashy. Just an acknowledgment of a good season.
I like what the Avs do. They have small grey ones for the division championships, and big burgundy ones for the cup wins. It makes it obvious that the real goal is the cup, but there’s some recognition of good-non cup years.
October 10th, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Not trying to make excuses, just stating a hypothesis. I didn’t get to watch most of the game, I was busy watching Mark Cuban’s every move at the Bulls game last night.
October 10th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I should have put a lot more on the Maple Queefs.
October 10th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
We get one hockey post a day and people come in to get it off topic. thanks guys. I don’t see the hockey fans doing that to the NBA posts.
That Avs/Bruins games was one of the most exciting games I’ve seen in awhile. If the Avs are going to play that way all season I don’t think Budaj is going to help much. The Bruins were skating pretty well last night..
October 10th, 2008 at 1:55 PM
the non-basketball association is that boring. its fans have to troll other threads for some excitement. i can understand.
