College Football Top 10
College Football October 17th. 2008, 5:45pm
All eyes on the Big 12 again Saturday. You know what’s going to be funny? The best football this season – and it’s not even close – has been played in the Big 12 and the SEC. How angry will everyone be if Penn State plays USC for the National title? Hopefully, very.
1. Alabama 6-0. Hosts Mississippi. Dangerous.
2. Texas 6-0. Gameday’s there!
3. Penn State 7-0. Don’t think about OSU next week.
4. Oklahoma 5-1. Need to locate defense, running game.
5. Florida 5-1. Long way to go to reach that title game.
6. USC 4-1. Boooooooooo.
7. Georgia 5-1. Don’t think ahead to LSU.
8. Oklahoma State 6-0. Texas looms.
9. Texas Tech 6-0. Not that enamored, yet. Especially with the porous defense.
10. Missouri 5-1. At stake: BCS and the Heisman for Chase. That’s all.

I will never get tired of that picture.
October 17th, 2008 at 5:48 PM
Ditto BBS’s thoughts about the titto.
October 17th, 2008 at 5:48 PM
usc and penn st. might be the two best teams in the country even if their conferences are having down years. i don’t see why one would be upset over that.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:00 PM
agree on the pic – that won’t get old for a while
October 17th, 2008 at 6:03 PM
If USC and PSU met in the championship game after an 8 team playoff, that would be acceptable. But in this system, it’s hard to think that stronger conferences and conference championship games are going to eliminate stronger teams.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:14 PM
I should clarify that I don’t think there is a chance a one loss Big 12 or SEC team would lose out on the BCS title game to a one loss Big 10 or Pac 10 team. That would be wrong. But if USC ends up with one loss and Penn State ends up with zero or one and all SEC and Big 12 teams end up with at least two, I wouldn’t think that a USC-PSU title game would be a tragedy.

For starters, USC lost to a team that was completely humiliated by Penn State.
But that’s okay, the media says USC’s the best. I guess that’s enough for me.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Isn’t close to to the top of the polls in the evil media’s polls which don’t count towards the BCS anyway. USC would most likely be favored over any team in the country by Vegas and that probably means something.
Oregon State is a notoriously slow starting team (19 wins the past two years) that admittedly got leveled AT PSU who, it turns out, could be the best team in the country. Ole Miss is a notoriously…well, bad team that beat Florida at home. Wow, that SEC is deep.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:25 PM
I meant USC isn’t close to the top of the polls (AP). As in, they are behind Florida for some unknown reason.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:27 PM
what’s sad is that USC plays in a joke of a league and so does Penn State. the SEC and Big 12 not only have league championships, but many, many good teams.
so essentially, you are being penalized for playing tough teams.
that would be like the student who got a B average in all honors courses getting denied from Harvard … while the school accepted a student with an A average in regular classes.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:27 PM
Oops I missed that the big, bad media had USC at number four in the USA Today Poll. Wait…not wait…that’s the COACHES’ poll who has USC as the highest ranked one loss team which is probably correct.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:32 PM
TBL – I agree to a point. The SEC and Big 12 have a very good top of the league but the SEC is only four teams deep this year (UF, Georgia, Tide, LSU) and has a lot of horrid teams. The Big 12 is much better and only has a couple real bad teams. The Pac 10 and Big 10 are both worse than those conferences but if you lose to teams like Ole Miss IN THE SWAMP, that is just embarrassing and isn’t showing any conference depth.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:40 PM
I’d be quite ecstatic – then again, my opinion may be a little biased. I’m off to State College for the weekend!
October 17th, 2008 at 6:41 PM
TBL – the Pac-10 is a joke of a league? I would say they are a solid league in a down season. Aside from the Washington schools (which are in the dumps and appear to be there for the foreseeable future), it is a pretty deep league. The SEC is much stronger at the top, but the middle to lower level programs are awful.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:50 PM
This is the only poll worth paying attention to.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:50 PM
For the 8 millionth time, I miss college
October 17th, 2008 at 6:51 PM
wait the pac 10 sucks? It has not been a good year.
/not a happy asu grad
October 17th, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Line of the day goes to bsanders.
Ditto on the titto.
October 17th, 2008 at 7:38 PM
The problem with not having a playoff system is that the media assumes that a team that goes 12-0 from a league that everyone knows is weaker deserves to go to the title game over a team that goes 11-1 in a very tough league. Because everyone plays different teams, trying to tell which team is better than the rest without a playoff is futile.
October 17th, 2008 at 8:27 PM
such an awful night for sports TV. ugh.
October 17th, 2008 at 8:30 PM
TBL -
How dare you? It’s football on the blue field!
October 17th, 2008 at 8:35 PM
Yes! Boo that team!! Boo them to hell!!
/still pissed that LSU got cheated in the game against Florida. Those 51 pts. shouldn’t count.
October 17th, 2008 at 8:36 PM
You know what funny KC when I turned my tv on, I thought the color was going out.
October 17th, 2008 at 8:43 PM
Midnight Madness show on ESPNU at 9.
October 17th, 2008 at 8:46 PM
I dont understand why this would be posted so late on a friday. could have gotten good conversation during the late morning
October 17th, 2008 at 9:05 PM
TBL- There is college hockey on. How dare you.
October 17th, 2008 at 9:14 PM
Forest Gump is on!
October 17th, 2008 at 9:23 PM
Bo Ryan was just doing the mashed potato on the BTN.
October 17th, 2008 at 9:30 PM
Fucking Forest Gump is awesome. Im watching Sarah Marshall right now though
October 17th, 2008 at 9:31 PM
I mean, I always knew Mila Kunis was hot, but this movie gives me a whole new perspective on her
October 17th, 2008 at 9:36 PM
Blazer -
I always thought she was cute on That 70s show and then didn’t know anything of her for years. She came back into action recently and I had to google her to figure out who the hell she was. She has grown into a lovely young woman.
October 17th, 2008 at 9:37 PM
Also, whoever mentioned it earlier, the college football poll should be posted after lunch on Friday or on Thursday. This is much too late in the day. I agree, good conversation (and smack talking) would occur.
October 17th, 2008 at 9:44 PM
That would be me KC. this could have gotten 200 comments easy
October 17th, 2008 at 9:46 PM
Minnesota is up 2-1 over SCSU. That’s good enough sports for me!
October 17th, 2008 at 9:49 PM
HawkEye- How good are Schroeder and Ness? Holy shit. Did you see the feature on them in the Trib today?
October 17th, 2008 at 9:53 PM
I will be the happiest Gopher fan on earth if Ness stays all 4 years. That kid is freaky good. And I did not see the Strib today. I’ll have to take a look at that online
October 17th, 2008 at 9:58 PM
Ness isn’t even fucking 18 yet. He enrolled a year early. He’s small as shit but whoever took him in the 2nd round is pretty validated.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:05 PM
nope, he hurried up his classes up at Warroad to get in at 17. And big doesn’t always mean that much. Like Zach Parise or Vanek.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:08 PM
Roseau. And I meant NHL-wise, not necessarily college wise. Obviously Nate Gerbe proved that one wrong.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:10 PM
knew it was one of those two little places. And I was talking NHL wise too. Vanek’s not all that big, but a scoring machine.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:14 PM
Crash the TV show. What a horrible fucking idea.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:16 PM
Fetch/Hawk -
I grew up in Kansas. Obviously, a hockey hotbed. What channel is this on? One of my roommates for a few years in college was from Chicago and a huge hockey fan. We’d be watching football and he’d be in his room watching hockey making way more noise than us. Boise is cruising. I’ll try something new tonight. Let me know what network this is on.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:19 PM
Fox Sports North has the Minnesota/SCSU game. Altitude or the Fox Sports Denver station might have a CC or Denver game.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:22 PM
I doubt anything in the KC area will have anything. The Nebraska-Omaha tournament is this weekend so that maybe, but go here and check
October 17th, 2008 at 10:24 PM
Shroeder > Ness?
October 17th, 2008 at 10:25 PM
As Hef would say, Small Sample Size
October 17th, 2008 at 10:27 PM
On that team it’s Kangas > everyone else but for now I’m saying Schroeder is the better Frosh. Subject to change.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Get back to be mid January, when they both get back from the Worlds. Then we’ll see who is better.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Any luck, KC?
October 17th, 2008 at 10:35 PM
Checking now. Had to put the boy to bed.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:36 PM
/too easy
October 17th, 2008 at 10:39 PM
Nope. But I do get Denver v Wisconsin on FCSC. No clue what that channel is. 1-1. The place has a lot of folks watching. Denver is usually pretty good, right? Just jogging my memory.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:39 PM
Fetch -
A threw that softball extra slow just for you.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Holy shit what a save by Kangas. God he’s sick. Denver v. Wisconsin should be a good game. Great offense v. Great defense.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:41 PM
How many times you gonna post this photo?
October 17th, 2008 at 10:42 PM
A = I tonight. I remember I could watch hockey with my roommate when I was taking my medicine for the glaucoma and when it was generally quiet. Something about the sound of skates on the ice and the sound of someone hitting the puck.
Another easy one for you, Fetch.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:46 PM
Denver/Wisky should be pretty good. Denver is always top 5 in the WCHA. Wisconsin is on one of their down cycles.
And hockey as relaxing, that’s a new one.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:51 PM
“And hockey as relaxing, that’s a new one.”
Haha. I’m from Kansas, if I haven’t mentioned that before.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Wow. They even have female sideline reporters for college hockey.
Also, I have no clue the crew who is calling this game, but they don’t annoy me. Just giving the facts and some insight on the game.
“Score! The lazer off the stick on the power play.”
McBain scored. All I can think of is Wolfcastle from the Simpsons.
October 17th, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Gotta bring the guys in somehow, KC. One of the sideline guys (who is also a pre and post game host) was busted for meth possession up here a couple of days back. That’s story’s been interesting
October 17th, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Jamie McBain huh, great player. The Wooger and Mazzocco are the best announcing team, probably in any sport.
October 17th, 2008 at 11:09 PM
I’m going to go back a bit on the best college hockey broadcast team. Frank and Ton Reid. That was a good combo.
October 18th, 2008 at 1:38 AM
Why again are we supposed to be enamored with the SEC this season? B/c Alabama beatup Clemson? Because LSU beat..umm.. Because Florida beat..umm? Because Georgia beat..umm?
I think the SEC is one of the top two conferences..but not not nearly what it was last season.
October 18th, 2008 at 10:30 AM
I think the SEC is one of the top two conferences..but not not nearly what it was last season.
I agree with that. Any self-respecting LSU fan knew we were screwed the second Ryan Perrilloux was off the team. I said here like 6 months ago that LSU was an 8-4 team.
Here’s my question: should an undefeated Utah team get into the title game before USC? I mean, they defeated Oregon State and all.
USC moved halfway up the top ten this week because they beat a team that lost to UNLV. Oh wait, Utah, beat UNLV too.
October 18th, 2008 at 10:51 AM
“Oklahoma 5-1. Need to locate defense, running game.”
And feet. Haven’t seen them in ages…
