Top Shelf: Tears, and Then a Goal, and Then a Win
NHL October 20th. 2008, 11:30am
Lee Diekemper on the night in the NHL.
Blackhawks 4, Canucks 2: There’s no crying in hockey! Patrick Kane wiped away his tears just in time to beat the Canucks. His power play goal and two assists did the trick. Pass the Kleenex.
Hurricanes 3, Ducks 1: Solid defense by the Canes. Out shot 22-10 in the final two periods, the Canes defense was strong. Goalie Michael Leighton turned away a total of 32 of 33 shots.

Anyone else expect the Ducks to be this bad?

worth noting after the ‘crosby and malkin arent lighting the lamp’ slump talk. malkin now leads the league in points and both had four points games saturday

I was at the Hawks game last night and I could tell Kane was really affected by Savard being fired. Despite the goals and assists, he didn’t play well last night at all – didn’t skate hard, made half-assed passes, generally stood around in the offensive zone during power plays. I heard him getting interviewed after the game and he made a joke about crying. He’s a 19yr old kid living on his own (no roommate) in a big city and his coach who he looked up to like a father figure just got fired. Let’s cut him a little slack.

@sportsgal:
I don’t think he was crying because Savard was fired. I think he was crying because they hired Quenneville.
October 20th, 2008 at 11:54 AM
sportsgal: I agree. I know the kid’s family in Buffalo. Good people. From what I hear, he’s a great kid. I hope the Hawks have a great year! (and lose to the Sabres in the Cup finals-lol)
October 20th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
seriously though thats a bad play on the management letting the kids live alone. do what shero did, assign the players to live with other players. sid with mario, staal with recchi, malkin with gonchar, letang in a duquesne sorority house.

jibble, that’s why I was crying when they fired Savvy. I hate Quenneville. He’s an epic douche.

@jjimmy:
Yeah i know. The Ducks have been pretty awful so far. I fully expect them to pull out of it though and recover.

@sportsgal:
I don’t think he’s a douche.. you probably have seen a different side of him with those Wings tinted glasses, and he’s coached the Blues and Avs. But One continuing theme I praised him on was how he never let his teams devolve into thuggery in blowout losses and wins. His teams played hard, but any time a game started getting out of control he’d reign in his pests and put out his more passive players. I always respected that.

Mole, Kane lived with Scotty Bowman’s son’s family last year, and he decided to get his own place because his family comes into town to visit and now they can stay with him. Plus Stan Bowman is fighting cancer, so I doubt he’d want to stay there during that… I was assuming Kane didn’t have a roommate based on his interview but I could be wrong.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:06 PM
jibbles, his teams didn’t devolve into thuggery? That avs team last year had plenty of dirty players. Same with his Blues teams. He’s a giant whiner. Plus, he had a goalie controversey last year in Colorado and a similar one is brewing here in Chicago. He made the wrong choice last year and I have the feeling he’s going to do the same this time around.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:19 PM
@sportsgal: That’s too bad aboout Stan. I’ve known Scotty for 20 years (parents were friends). Even got a picture of my son w/ the 1st Cup he won in Detriot in ‘97 when he had it at his house in Buffalo. Mike Illich got him the coolest car I’d ever seen:a 55 (last Wings Cup win) red convertible /w white interior w/ Wings logo on doors. Beautiful car!
October 20th, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Don’t disagree with the goalie controversy.. he’s a poor coach. Yeah the Avs had pests, but the only one that was really any kind of dirty was Cody McLeod. And anytime he actually started playing dirty Q benched him. (I know you’re going to say Laperriere is dirty… but he’s not.)
Our resident goon, Scott Parker, never got any ice time. And he is a bit of a whiner.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:29 PM
See, I think this is proof the Hawks/Wings rivalry is almost nonexistent, no one in Chicago freaked out in a bad way about the Scotty Bowman hiring.
I love Scotty, I was sad to see him leave the Wings organization, but I understood his decision to go to the Hawks, especially in light of all of Stan’s health issues.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Laperriere is a bitch and resorts to taking a dirty penalty when he’s up against someone more skilled than him (which is pretty much everyone in the league). F that guy.
I honestly don’t understand the Quenneville hiring. Sure, he has more experience than Savvy, but he’s a shitty coach. I have no idea what Scotty Bowman sees in him.
October 20th, 2008 at 12:38 PM
Yeah, Scotty would want to be near Stan as much as he could. They also have a disabled adult son who has lived in a group home near Buffalo for 30 years. That’s why they never moved away from Buffalo after he left the Sabres, as he and Suella love the care he gets and don’t want to have to uproot him. Scotty’s a good guy.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:01 PM
not a bad choice of residence.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:02 PM
Maltby is a bitch and resorts to taking a dirty penalty when he’s up against someone more skilled than him (which is pretty much everyone in the league). F that guy.
Fixed!
October 20th, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Bullshit, jibble. How about I remind you of how well your team did against the Wings in the playoffs?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:15 PM
That’s kind of the point. In 2 of those games the Wings beat down the avs badly.. Quenneville could have easily sent out the goons to “send a message” and we could have a bloody cowardly war going on with outr lesser skilled players going after Zetterberg and Datsyuk, as some coaches have done.
Quenneville stayed classy sending out guys like Arnason and Wolski and making sure no one gooned it up, as other coaches would have done.
