worth pointing out is
its not like its getting outdrawn
and one of the two games below it? a redsox weekend game from last season. BUT I THOUGHT WE NEEDED BOSTON TO MAKE PEOPLE CARE?
*jerking off motion*

and still nobody cares. See if you like Philly or Tampa, you will probably watch the WS. If you like Penn St. or o$u, you will probably watch the college football game. Why is that even worth pointing out?
October 24th, 2008 at 8:59 AM
It just doesn’t matter.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:03 AM
you don’t care what sports fans are interested in? well, i do.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:04 AM
I guess I don’t care all that much about ratings. About the only thing that ratings are good for right now are whether the product you’re putting on the field is good or not. I hate watching baseball, but I made it a point to watch last night, and I was very surprised at the game. These two teams actually do shit…the pitchers aren’t taking 20 minutes between pitches, bases are being stole teams are making shifts in defense.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:05 AM
it is shocking that so many players are physically incapable of hitting a ball towards the thirdbasemen. i dont think i have seen so many shifts that leave second to third completely open before. lay down a fucking bunt for gods sake.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:07 AM
I always thought ratings were used to determine how many people were watching. If you had good ratings the price of ads went up….I thought it was all about ads and money, not so much about what people were interested in. Sure, in concept, finding out what people are interested in is probably what ratings should be used for, but over the years you can see that the fucking people in charge don’t give a shit what we are interested in. If that were the case some shows would be getting yanked faster, more often and sports would be dominating the over the air networks. Instead we get Dancing with the fucking stars.

When I saw some of the shifts that the Rays were making I was shocked. Seriously, how bad are these guys at hitting the ball that they can’t get a ball down the third base line. I remember when guys could place the ball anywhere in the field they wanted.

maggs woke up…he is pissy…
October 24th, 2008 at 9:10 AM
with power hitters i can understand it i guess but theyre doing it against utley and sure enough, ground out to the right side if he makes contact. its baffling.

sports tv ratings = movie box office receipts.
bean counters care, sports/movie fans don’t.
quick: think of your favorite five movies. they were all the most-watched movies the weekend they debuted, right? no! well, then they shouldn’t have even been produced.
shut the theatres down!
as molemaninthemorning pointed out, game 1 pulled in more eyeballs than anything else wednesday night. exactly how is that bad for fox (or for baseball)?
October 24th, 2008 at 9:12 AM
Sports fans are interested in the sports they like. If the number of teams is cut down to two then there won’t be as many people watching, obviously. If there are still 10 teams in the hunt for the NC in college football, more people are going to be watching that, obviously. So what exactly is your point?
October 24th, 2008 at 9:14 AM
imagine!
but if you just went by the way the suits are crying you wouldn’t have turned the game on. glad you can think for yourself. mad props!
yes, teams other than the yankees/red sox can actually place baseball. the secret is out.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:15 AM
I seriously hate watching baseball, just usually to boring and to long. Pitchers and batters draggin ass, doing all this bullshit ritual stuff. You could see a little of it last night with the batters going in and out of the box, but it wasn’t terrible. Anyways, i was totally sucked into the game last night.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:17 AM
Yeah the good ol’ days when we could just make shit up and say it happened.
Game theory says you should bunt occasionally when they happens. Papi tried it twice last series. Pena does it, too.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:22 AM
Before guys started juicing and everyone turned into a power hitter that could barely walk, guys actually had base hits, ran the bases and played a tactical game. What I was saying was that guys were better at placing the ball in the field, hitting away from the defense instead of just relying on power to get the ball out of the park.

I know of my PSU cronies from Philly will likely watch PSU/OSU as a priority and then flip to the Phils game during commercials (or full-time once PSU turns it into a rout)
/delusional
October 24th, 2008 at 9:23 AM
Actually, if you are going to Game 3 of the WS (like I am) and also happen to be a PSU alum (alot of us in the Philly area), you are deeply conflicted on Saturday night, when both events occur at the same time.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:24 AM
I thought it was a fair observation. At one point, more people cared to watch playoff baseball even over the NFL in primetime. I think the WCNYFG/Skins game in 1986 is still the lowest rated game ever for MNF. That was a battle for first place in the NFC East, and for best record in the league. It was up against the Mets and Sox. granted the teams playing in the series were more attractive in the Northeast, but hey, MNF always pulls numbers.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:25 AM
All this coming from a guy who “seriously hates watching baseball”??? Do you have old games on tape that you watch?
October 24th, 2008 at 9:26 AM
I’m going to drag out another TV to watch both the PSU/OSU and WS. Never fails, when I try and flip on nights like this I miss something.

Man, the past was so great. Can’t wait for my time machine to show up in the mail. It was more innocent back then. People were friendlier and the schools were segregated. I’m so sad I was born so late.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:28 AM
It doesn’t matter if you are conflicted. You make the choice you make and that is that. The point is the fans will watch what they want and the non-fans will as well. Basically this is a post bitching about what the non-fans are watching. And to that I say; who gives a shit?
October 24th, 2008 at 9:29 AM
interesting analogy. some of my favorite movies probably did nothing in the box office. most award-winning movies do nothing in the box office.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:31 AM
Most of TBL’s favorite movies won tons of awards. Like best special effects, best sound, best sound editing, best special effects in an unrealistic war scene, best special effects in an unrealistic disaster film, best sound in a fake gang war. You know, all the prestigious ones.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:38 AM
you know what my favorite movies are? how? we’ve never met or spoken on the phone.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:40 AM
invincible is sitting at numbers one through five on the list if i recall correctly
but in all seriousness, its not like your movie taste hasnt been widely lambasted on here
October 24th, 2008 at 9:44 AM
@hef – wow, where’d that come from? I don’t remember mentioning society in that comment. Thought I was clearly talking about power hitters in baseball.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:50 AM
ding… ding… ding!
October 24th, 2008 at 9:53 AM
moleman – invincible? very good sports movie. i enjoyed it.
jimmy – at the same time, since you’re willing to talk about movies, let’s talk about TV shows. the shows that get high ratings are brought back. no matter how good a show might be, if the ratings stink, it is gone.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:58 AM
The game won its slot. That’s all it can do, right? Can’t go higher than 1st?
With more channels comes more dilution.
October 24th, 2008 at 10:09 AM
at least Goodell isnt letting Sunday Night Football happen this week. Should make the ratings a little higher for GAME 4 of the World Series
October 24th, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Vanilla Sky.
October 24th, 2008 at 10:28 AM
correct. so you are suggesting the cardinals and tigers should have been contracted after the 2006 world series?
of if the yankees/red sox/cubs aren’t in the world series, the fall classic should only be televised on hbo or showtime like boxing matches? or on pay-per-view like WWE events?
October 24th, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Doesn’t sound like Mother Nature is playing nice for Game 3 in Philly.
If that happens, there will be no off day. They will play Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in Philly and Wednesday and Thursday in Tampa. Interesting. Looks like Fox really wants game 7 on Thursday night, which is a complete switch from wanting games during the weekend…
