Top Shelf: Buffalo, Habs and Wild Remain Unbeaten
NHL October 24th. 2008, 11:45am
Lee Diekemper on the night in the NHL.
Penguins 4, Hurricanes 1: Less than 12 minutes from a loss, the Pens exploded with four goals in the final period. Sid the Kid snapped out of his goal-scoring slump to tie the game. 2004 Stanley Cup hero Ruslan Fedotenko, apparently removed from the Federal Witness Protection Program, scored the game-winner 32 seconds later.
Stars 5, Islanders 3: Hoping to spark some offense, the Stars grouped Mike Ribeiro, Brendan Morrow and Lou Eriksson to its front line. Money. Eriksson two goals in the first period, and Ribeiro had a goal and four assists. Agitator Sean Avery enjoyed a warm welcome from Isles fans.
Coyotes 2, Capitals 1: Backup goalie Mikael Tellqvist stopped 31 shots in his first start of the season. Beltway insiders claim Alex Ovechkin has been spotted in Dick Cheney’s bunker.
Sabres 4, Wild 3 (OT): Break up the Sabres. After Buffalo got a pair of late goals to send the game into overtime, Derek Roy’s goal gave the Sabres the win in a game between the NHL’s two hottest teams.

Lee – I must commend you, the choices of puck bunnies the last few days has been tremendous. We may actually get more than 4 people commenting on the hockey posts if this keeps up.

Dallas was trying to spark their offense? They just put up a 5 spot on the rangers the night before.
October 24th, 2008 at 12:07 PM
Roeth was close to saying it, but didn’t get it done. So, I will.
YES!
Nice night to watch the Blue Jackets play the Rangers. Zherdev returns to town with a bounty likely square on his helment for whoever can hit him hardest. He was an incredible talent, but an even bigger lazy bum for the Jackets. Should be fun to watch the fireworks at Nationwide tonight.

She’s even hotter than the girl yesterday. Well done. Avs won their 4th in a row last night, by the way.

Budaj had his best game of the season… and just to piss sportsgal off: Lapperiere had a Gordie Howe hat trick and was 1st star of the night.

And since Lee didn’t… there should be a H/t to Lozo for the puck bunny on that one.

if the Wild lost 4-3 in OT to the Sabres, how do they remain unbeaten? Or is there some weird “an OT loss doesn’t count as a real loss” rule in the NHL I’m not aware of?
October 24th, 2008 at 12:22 PM
The Sabres and Thomas Vanek are on “FY-AH”!
GO SABRES!!
October 24th, 2008 at 12:29 PM
giggy, you still get a point for an OT loss, so no, it doesn’t really count as a loss.
Get to see my Red Wings tomorrow!! Can’t wait!!
Lappiere could score a million Gordie Howe hat tricks, but he still sucks at hockey. In fact, scoring a Howe Hat Trick will be the only time you’ll ever hear that douche’s name in the same sentence with the Greatest Hockey Player of All Time.

That is the girl from yesterday. Both of those pictures came from the same nhl.com blog. Didn’t you follow Lozo’s link?

This is why I hate hockey. A loss should be a loss. Even if it nets you a point (no pun intended but certainly applicable) it should still chalk up a loss.

And I still have bigger boobs than her.

Yet another reason to hate the NHL. Oh, they didn’t lose, they just didn’t win. Now let’s all sit around center ice and talk about our feelings.
October 24th, 2008 at 12:51 PM
i sure hope so sportsgal. that girl had mosquito bites
October 24th, 2008 at 12:52 PM
sportsgal, +2

I DEMAND PROOF!
October 24th, 2008 at 1:01 PM
Haha! Thanks for the +2 GYD.

an OT Loss is still a loss, the proper phrase would be “the Wild remain unbeaten in regulation”
but yeah its still stupid.
The Bluejackets have some hate for someone? Welcome to the NHL! It’s only taken 8 years.
October 24th, 2008 at 1:26 PM
The Bluejackets and Hawks apparently have some big hate for each other because there were too many fights to count the last time they played. It was crazy!
October 24th, 2008 at 1:43 PM
Also, Ruslan Fedotenko was NOT in the Witness Relocation Program last year… he played 67 games for the New York Islanders.
October 24th, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Actually he’s got 4 career GHHT’s… and a 20-goal season
