UNC Hoops Fans Angered by ESPN
1-liner, College Basketball, ESPN October 28th. 2008, 1:15pmUNC Fans vs ESPN: It’s not even November and the whiny, uptight Chapel Hill set is ticked off at ESPN. According to a reader, ESPN’s Adrian Branch was on “College Basketball Live” this week, and when picking the ACC’s Preseason Player of the Year, he selected Duke’s Kyle Singler. And then, maybe because Branch forgot Tyler Hansbrough didn’t go to the NBA, the former Maryland star left Hansbrough off the All-ACC team. Is Branch mad at Hansbrough for leaping off frat decks? Or chatting with sideline reporters? We have no video to back up the reader’s claims, but you can read the bile and anger here. Oh, and another voice saying Paulus very likely probably lost his starting job. (Scout, FOX)

Did Adrian Branch ask Roy Williams what he and Phog Allen talked about when Roy got the head coaching job?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
October 28th, 2008 at 1:24 PM
Butler?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:24 PM
Cause if not then this post is just taking up a space that could be filled by another Danyelle Sargeant post.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:25 PM
can’t wait for Moleman to show up re: the Paulus link
October 28th, 2008 at 1:25 PM
I dont see a problem with picking Singler as the preseason player of the year. I hate Duke, but i think that kid can ball
October 28th, 2008 at 1:25 PM
Did he shout “What the f&%k was that!!!” when he got the news?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:26 PM
Very likely probably, eh?
Also, UNC fans are becoming just as annoying as Duke fans.
/heads for the hills
October 28th, 2008 at 1:27 PM
NBA starts tonight. Leave these kiddy games alone.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:29 PM
@NickP: We have to watch NCAAB though, since that’s where the kids make the real money. Everybody knows that Shaq didn’t make his money in Orlando, he made it in college.
/name the movie, kids.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Nolan Smith starting makes Duke a much better team. I like it a lot.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:29 PM
god i hate college basketball…worst. sport. ever.
im saying it…id rather watch the WNBA than college basketball.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:29 PM
NBA starts tonight. Leave these kiddy games alone.
amen to that. i can’t wait for the blazers and lakers. that should be a great way to kick the season off.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:30 PM
@ GreatShatnersGhost: I assume you mean Blue Chips?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:31 PM
What does any of this have to do with Danyelle Seargent?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:32 PM
You think you know a guy, then he goes and says something like this
October 28th, 2008 at 1:33 PM
NBA blows compared to the college game. I would rather watch an ACC college game live than a NBA game. They should just hand out the ACC player of the year award to Hansbrough. I cannot stand the kid, but he is a great college player.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:33 PM
@Rockets: Well, that happened in Blue Chips, but the line is from BASEketball
October 28th, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Really Spence?? How does that even make sense? Especially with the team that Thad has put together in Columbus, I’d figure you’d be all about the Buckeyes in hoops. What gives?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:40 PM
Kazaam?
The only reason tOSU will be watchable is because we have lotto picks. On the margin, though, college basketball is gheyer than a dogpile of Strahans.

October 28th, 2008 at 1:43 PM
the world series has been postponed already. will anyone notice?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:43 PM
Doesn’t that usually make a CBB team worth watching?
All Thad Mata can do is recruit 7 footers: Oden, Kofus, Mullens.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:44 PM
what gives? WHAT GIVES?
hyperbole, that’s what.
but seriously, college basketball mgiht be the worst played, worst coached, worst executed sport out there. when a team of 6′ tall white guys can be considered a contender, there’s something wrong…and that thing that’s wrong is the good teams are coached horrendously.
there’s no honor in college basketball like there is in college football. there’s no glory. it’s a bunch of stupid kids with huge egos and no skill trying to be all NBA and failing miserably. i dont like the charade, the veil in front of us hiding the fact that college basketball is nothing mroe than an NBA developmental league.
basically…it’s awful.
actually, the only reason i hate college basketball is because of one man…dickie v. that man is a pox on humanity. this may sound awful, but i wish his throat problems forced him to retire.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:44 PM
anyone think the college game will be any different with the 3pt arch moved back a foot? i don’t know if it will open the lane or not.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:44 PM
@rocket: Yeah, it does, and I will watch tOSU hoops, much like I do tOSU football.
I won’t watch any other games, though.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:46 PM
Thad Mata = God
October 28th, 2008 at 1:47 PM
wow. Basically every reason spencer just listed, I feel the exact opposite about and is why I love NCAA basketball. I must live in some parallel universe where college basketball = the NBA.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
a reputable article that actually says paulus is on the bench, im fine with that. you still jumped to conclusions early before hand.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Thad Matta is a pretty poor coach. Luckily, being a great recruiter is 10x more important.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
make that doesn’t equal the NBA. ass.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
University of Florida Athletics > Ohio State Athletics
October 28th, 2008 at 1:49 PM
kind of like when the short, rat-faced Spaniard or the fat ass white guy can be contenders with the chiseled black guy.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:50 PM
spence, i gotta disagree with you on all points as well.
i love the nba and college. probably love college a bit more. just had my draft last night. geeked.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:50 PM
but when short, rat-faced Spaniard and fat ass white guy are BETTER than the chiseled black guy…it’s acceptable.
/seriously
//ok, not really
October 28th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
feel free to disagree with me on any of the above points…
but NOTHING can change my opinion on dickie V.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:52 PM
I’m with you on Dickie V., 400%.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Are you saying you have a college basketball fantasy draft? I didn’t even know that existed. There’s a kid that goes to the local community college by my house who averaged 40 ppg last year. I hope you got him.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Spence, I can buy into most of what you are saying. The biggest reason I enjoy CBB is the intensity. While guys like Mata (tOSU) and Barnes (UT) aren’t very good with the Xs and Os, they are phenomenal recruiters and can put together amazing talents. I like watching teams that have a quirky style like John Belin had at WVU (and supposedly will at Michigan). There are other great coaches out there: Izzo and Howland have big programs while guys like Sean Miller and Travis Ford have helped shape smaller programs into contenders. Most importantly, there is nothing better than March Madness. No sport has anything to rival it, especially the fraudulent CFB BCS/bowl system.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:56 PM
somewhere, bobby knight reads this with one of his bushy eyebrows raised.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:57 PM
replace the height and race in the second sentence and i’d swear this was about the nba.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Actually, Bobby Knight took a dump, picked it up in some TP, and threw it a Spence.

this is my biggest problem with college basketball…a stupid tourney that basically lets everyone in and everyone gets their BRACKETS going, only they fill out 20 of them so everyone gets to say their right.
i can’t stand the fact that lesser talented teams can thrive if only for the reason that the lanes are clogged and the 3-point line is closer. it’s just ridiculous. why not give unathletic, short players 3 points for every basket then?
and the NBA, when it’s good, is the best sport on the planet…only the shittiness that college basketball has devolved into in the last 20 years has turned the NBA into utter trash and a fuckign family event with mascots and fireworks and bullshit like that.
im getting real close to “cranky, old man rant” levels so i might need a cigarette break even though i don’t smoke.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
I 100% agree college basketball sucks. It is just not polished and all around awful without exception.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:59 PM
I do love March Madness though…
October 28th, 2008 at 1:59 PM
raised in agreement…you know he can’t stand what college basketball has become…a bunch of 18 year old primadonnas who have no intention of graduating and no intention on being coached.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:00 PM
don’t listen to maggs; he hates the nfl too.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:00 PM
Dicky V is the greatest
October 28th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
you would too if you had to root for the lions.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
NCAA football >>>> MLB >>>> NBA >>>> NFL >>>> NCAA basketball
October 28th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
that’s why i like watching the mid-majors.
you’ve got a point spencer but i think it’s a bit too broad of a brush. for example, illinois a couple of years ago was fun as hell to watch. that team was loaded with future nba guys but they played really well.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:03 PM
The last two are probably tied only because of the one year rule in NCAA basketball…
October 28th, 2008 at 2:04 PM
i agree wholeheartedly…when OSU upset them in their last game of the season i was glued to the TV all afternoon.
the problem is, all those NBA guys were the old school variety…seniors and juniors. i highly doubt we’ll ever see a team assembled like that ever again.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:04 PM
march madnessi absolutely awesome (bay-bee).
college football
mlb
nfl
nhl
college basketball
October 28th, 2008 at 2:05 PM
ah, ok. i see what you’re saying. the one-and-dones.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:10 PM
Are you forgetting the last two champs?
October 28th, 2008 at 2:12 PM
that’s a good point.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:15 PM
March Madness is great, which is why I wait for those 10 days a year and skip the other 4-5 months of boring ineptitude.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:15 PM
I love the one and done rule what if Lebron and Kobe went to Duke?
October 28th, 2008 at 2:20 PM
No way LeBronze would’ve been admitted to Dook. Even under Coach K rules.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:29 PM
@clown
But he just wants to be a Global Icon. That is his only goal!
October 28th, 2008 at 3:44 PM
Just another reason to absolutely hate UNC with the intensity of 1,000 suns.
