Sizing Up the College Football Weekend
College Football October 30th. 2008, 5:52pm
Saturday, almost back-to-back, there will be colossal college football games with National Championship ramifications. Start with Verne Lundquist (we hope), cocktails, Gators and Bulldogs at 3:30. Go grab dinner with your girl and then get back in front the TV by 8 for the laser show in Lubbock. Don’t act like you’ll be up for going out Saturday night after the Friday mess that is Halloween. Lee Diekemper previews it all.
Northwestern at No. 17 Minnesota
No, this isn’t hockey. The Gophers are remarkably in the Top 25 in football! With a little help, the Gophers — the GOPHERS! – could play in the Rose Bowl. Despite playing in the Metrodome Saturday, Gophers fans are packing ponchos upon word Michele Tafoya will attend. Pick Gophers.
No. 15 Florida State at Georgia Tech
Well, well, well. It’s been a while Bobby. Glad to see you back in the Top 25. Hope you enjoy your brief stay. The Noles historically struggle with gimmicky offenses (see: Wake Forest) and the Ramblin’ Wreck’s triple option will give FSU fits. After the loss, Bowden will regale reporters with the time he coached against Amos Alonzo Stagg. Pick: Yellow Jackets.
Pittsburgh at Notre Dame
Two of the most overblown coaches in the sport match wits. As usual, Dave Wannstedt just can’t get out of his own way. The Panthers will beg for Touchdown Jesus’ mercy. Free beer at Jimmy Clausen’s house! Pick: Irish
No. 8 Florida vs. No. 6 Georgia at Jacksonville
Ever since Urban Meyer wet his pants over Georgia’s Gator Stomp last year, the Florida coach has been on a crusade for revenge. Saturday he gets it. In a desperate attempt to turn a critical swing state, John McCain’s camp leaked rumors that Sarah Palin is involved in a passionate tryst with Tim Tebow. Pick: Gators
No. 1 Texas at No. 7 Texas Tech
College football’s version of arena football will have just enough defense from the Longhorns to stop Graham Harrell. In a ploy to throw off Colt McCoy, Texas Tech offensive lineman “Mankind” plans to steal Rachel Glandorf’s media credentials. Pick: Longhorns.

A college hockey reference from Lee in a football post? You win. And yes I will be going out Saturday.

Not up for going out Saturday night? The party I’m going to Saturday night will be bigger than tomorrow night. Yes, I am dressing up as the same a thing both nights.
What is this, amateur hour??

I’m glad that Minnesota is doing well, because Ted Roof is one of the nicest people around, and a damn good defensive coordinator.
He still sucks ass as a head coach though.

some of my friends are claiming Notre Dame is gonna get a BCS bid. That cant be possible.
October 30th, 2008 at 6:13 PM
No worries, cool_rick. Ain’t happenin’.

If by gimmicky you mean bad then yes Wake Forest’s offense is gimmicky

My cousin is going to BBQ for the Texas/Tech game, and I’m bringing over a bottle of Jack after I spend the day here on campus writing a paper.
Maybe I could find out what time that girl from my lab gets off work on Saturday, and ask her out to lunch or dinner.

If Virginia can handle GT’s triple option(and they pretty much did after the first two possessions), FSU can, too. And wow, did that hurt; giving the Criminoles a compliment.

@cool_rick
I have no idea why people like you will cry to high heavens if Notre Dame gets a BCS bid (and make FOX millions), yet don’t mind at all when an ACC or Big East team will make it. Oh, they play in a “conference”.
Read the re-cap from this BCS bowl, and tell me if FSU “deserved” to be there.

I guess I can just respond by saying you suck, havent beaten anyone, slurp yourselves, and fuck Fox. That pretty much somes it up.

Why the hell wouldn’t you post this during the day when people are “at work”?

@Bobby
Because an 8-3 ND team takes away an at large spot from a much more deserving team this year…and no one wants to see ND get their ass handed to them yet again. Just think if USC and Oregon State won out…OSU would get the Rose Bowl berth due to owning the tiebreaker, ND and one of the non BCS teams get the 2 at large spots, and USC is looking at a Holiday bowl berth at 11-1 and a top 5 BCS ranking. Think that’d go over well?
Just for funsies, ND’s schedule so far:
1-7 San Diego St win
2-6 Michigan win
7-2 Michigan St loss
2-6 Purdue win
4-4 Stanford win
6-2 UNC loss
winless Washington win
Notice a pattern here?

@tallguy… I get it! They beat terrible teams and lose to mediocre/good ones. Through no fault of their own, ND’s schedule is just God-awful this year. There might not be a worse schedule anywhere than that…
October 30th, 2008 at 7:55 PM
For anyone that is listening… Minnesota is absolutely the WORST team to ever be ranked #17 in the country.
Actually, THEIR schedule is WORSE than ND’s… That would be a great bowl match-up. ND could actually win their first bowl game in 15 years against the Gophers.

daniel gibson has 20 points in 16 mins and the Cavs are drilling the Bobcats by 20 in the first half
October 30th, 2008 at 8:36 PM
and ND barely got by SD as i recall. most of their wins have only been by 7′ish, save for UW.
October 30th, 2008 at 9:43 PM
When you say Daniel, you really mean BOOBIE! What a great nickname. I yelled BOOBIE about 10 times tonight as he ended up with 25…
