World Series Ratings: Good News/Bad News
1-liner, Baseball, Television October 31st. 2008, 11:15amWorld Series Ratings: First, the good news – Wednesday’s completion of Game 5 was the highest-rated MLB game this season, registering a 13.4 (16.7 million viewers). Bud Selig probably should thank Obama for the strong lead-in. Now, the bad news: This year’s World Series was the lowest-rated ever. In addition, there was a significant drop-off from last year’s series-clincher (14.3 to 13.4).

So it’s settled.. three innings of baseball is plenty. Diminishing returns on anything longer.

By the way, the NBA Finals averaged a higher rating than the World Series..

Still think it got better ratings because people knew that they could see the end of the game. I believe that a lot of people in the East don’t bother to watch when they know it won’t end until they go to bed.
Start games at 7 Eastern (not 7:37) or 4 Eastern to pick up people from the left coast as the game continues. It really isn’t rocket science, but the powers that be still think that an 8:45 Eastern start time is the best for everyone, never mind the fact the 65% of the country is asleep by the 7th inning. Dumb.

Wally — Is there a East Coast baseball fan that disagrees with that? Is there any common sense idea that refutes it?
Every year there is some event that is an acute reminder of how dopey Selig is. Look, if your sport is going to make up its rules as it goes along the person making these decisions on the fly shouldn’t be prone to stupid decisions. Selig is, and he actually looks like a dope on top of it.

on top of the start time, maybe MLB shouldn’t wait until the post season to start hyping up teams and start during the regular season.
