Pam Ward and Wisconsin’s Bret Bielema Attended the Herman Edwards School of Clock Managment
College Football, ESPN, Video November 3rd. 2008, 12:45pmESPN’s Pam Ward was bailed out of an announcing gaffe Saturday at the end of Michigan State-Wisconsin by Badgers’ coach Bret Bielema, who inexplicably called timeout, giving the Spartans plenty of time to set up the game-winning field goal … instead of rushing it. Result: MSU 25, Wisky 24.

there is no worse football announcer in the free world than pam ward. none.
i mean, she doesn’t even know the difference between a punt and a kickoff. i’m serious. she is an absolute disgrace.

Hmm – sounds familiar

i also think the big ten decided to start its own network so it wouldn’t be stuck with her every weekend on espn2. she has to be providing conjugal visits to some sorry espn executive. there’s no other logical excuse for her being behind a mic for any football game.

Don’t forget Bret’s ingenius decision to get his own 15 yard penalty earlier in the game.

Lions fan here.
I remember one time back in the day when Scott Mitchell spiked the ball on 4th down and the Lions lost.
God that guy was terrible.

Sparty – make sure you send Bielema a postcard. He will be largely responsible for getting you there.

Not entire their fault. After taking the 1st timeout, Bielema decided to use another one to “ice” the kicker.

huge Spartans fan and alumni here. I watched that whole game and Wisconsin’s idea to call not one, but two timeouts at the end of the game was one of the stupidest calls i’ve ever seen a coach make. The MSU field goal unit is running from the opposite end of the field to set things up with time melting away, everyone’s nervous and jittery, and Wisconsin calls timeout to let them get their thoughts together. unbelievable. Obviously not complaining because we won, but that whole time, I was thinking we’re going to miss this field goal because its rushed, and then we get the free TO. PSU fans HAVE to be a bit upset about that, giving MSU still a chance to at least share the Big Ten title is we can get past Purdue and somehow, somehow beat Penn State.

Alright, I’m not a huge fan of Pam Ward, but there are worse announcers, and many who have made similar mistakes like that. As someone who has called a game for live broadcast television (is it still considered a broadcast if nobody watches?), it’s very easy to make those kinds of mistakes.. You often are looking one thing that has nothing to do with the next play.. and then you have a director/producer in your ear telling you another.
But yeah Pan Ward sucks. But there are many worse.

Not at all – I was rooting for MSU. I want you guys ranked as high as possible when we play to help SOS.

The Badgers had 12 guys on the field, that’s why he called TO. He had to call TO, there was no other option at the time. I can’t believe people are dumb enough to rag on the coach for that.

Wrong – they only had 10 on the field. That isn’t a penalty and they still would have better off letting him kick it with the clock running.

Just a little ridiculous to isolate one mistake (which she immediately owns) from a 3 hour broadcast.
I wouldn’t want you as my boss, TBL …

From my perspective it was a lose-lose situation for Bielema… I was at the game. MSU had their Field Goal unit on the field AND set with about 15 seconds left… they had a good ten seconds to relax and let the clock run down until like 3 seconds. Blame the idiot who had the holding call on third and 1 right after Clay scampered for like 20 yards. That’s what killed that game
