Top Shelf: The Mighty Ducks
NHL November 6th. 2008, 11:15am
Lee Diekemper on the night in the NHL.
Ducks 5, Blues 2: The Ducks have won eight out of 10. Teemu Selanne’s power play goal to start the second extended his point streak to eight games. At this rate, Linda Cohn’s agent is going to demand hazardous duty pay from Disney.
Devils 4, Lightning 3 (SO): Kevin Weekes, hailed by some as the Obama of NHL goaltenders, improved to 2-1 since Marty Brodeur went down with a bum elbow. Weekes can thank Patrik Elias and Jamie Langenbrunner for their shootout goals.
Blue Jackets 5, Oilers 4: Depending on one’s point of view, it was either a monumental collapse or a thrilling rally. The Jackets scored three unanswered goals in the third, capped by Manny Malhotra’s game-winner late. It was almost enough for the locals to forget Pat Devlin.

Kevin Weekes, hailed by some as the Obama of NHL goaltenders
Then I guess we call Grant Fuhr the Martin Luther King of NHL goaltenders???
November 6th, 2008 at 11:21 AM
Good work on using the Islander ice girl. They didn’t even play last night, yet their girls get some love.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:22 AM
LOL!!!
i remember when played for tampa bay. he is no obama nor brodeur.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:26 AM
@jimmy: I used to play golf w/ a TON of Sabres in Buffalo (belonged to the same CC as half the team). Fuhr, Hawerchuk, Mogilny, etc. Fuhr & Hawerchuk were like 3 handicaps and great guys.
BTW, when he played in Edmonton, he was better than Obama or Brodeur-lol
November 6th, 2008 at 11:27 AM
I can’t even think of who Ray Emery would equate to. Nor would I really care to.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:30 AM
CBJ gets a needed win last night. Talk about a roller coaster. Up 2-0, outshooting the Oil 2 to 1 through 35 minutes. Oil scores 4 in about 10 minutes on 6 shots. Crowd pissed. CBJ score 2 in 3 minutes to tie and another with a minute left to win.
They have a GREAT young nucleus. Probably still 1 year away, but Brassard and Voracek are 2 of the best players in the league that can’t legally drink in the US. Add that to Nash, Huselius, and Umberger and they have some talent, finally.

nobody was up for a revolt when the bailouts started. i wish there had been one.
perhaps you guys will start to grumble more when you stop getting a tax benefit from 401k contributions? if that happens, i think we could really see a revolt. spread the word that this is fucked up
November 6th, 2008 at 11:36 AM
@BBS: That’s why I didn’t mention him. I wouldn’t have said anything nice, and wasn’t worth the hassle.
btw: Lindy Ruff still hates Billy Smith

perhaps you guys will start to grumble more when you stop getting a tax benefit from 401k contributions?
TBL: My tax benefits ended at around 11 PM Tuesday night, but thanks for piling on-lol
November 6th, 2008 at 11:39 AM
TBL — That is an incredible, reactionary, ridiculous proposal from a inconsequential Congressman. There’s no way it happens.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:40 AM
@jpq1999 — You make more than 250k? Nice work.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:41 AM
sportsdork – you sure about that? bookmark that comment of mine and get back to me in 6 months. would you really put anything past these crooks/politicians?
why can’t we just cut Michigan out of the US and give it to canada? GM Is fucked, and they’re going to beg pelosi for more $$$ today

Does anyone like the Ducks or enjoy watching them play? Chris Pronger alone is enough to make me hate them.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:43 AM
@Wally. What is the story with the Blue Jackets crowds? I see they are getting 11 to 13,000 a game. Is the town over them? When I lived there and had season tickets, it was packed almost every night.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Sportsdork: In Obama’s last campaign ad he lowered it to $200K.
BTW, I would guess that the $200K amount will continue to go like the stock market has done since yesterday (down almost 800 points as of right now). Remember, Biden when said $150K? Probably was discussed internally, and the number stuck in his head and he said it by mistake.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Can’t stand the Ducks. There is nothing redeeming about that team.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:47 AM
TBL — The House of Representatives is filled with all sorts of jackasses from both parties. That are constantly making proposals for legislation that is laughable.
What will be interesting to watch over the next two years is how Obama/Pelosi handle guys like Charlie Rangel. With the Republicans essentially neutered, Rangel is empowered. He’s the far-left side of the Dem Party, not Obama. Rangel has all sorts of ideas as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee… and he doesn’t care about increasing the deficit to enact them.
Expect Obama to be fighting with him more than the Republicans.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:48 AM
The Ducks are a tough team to watch, Corry Perry, Pronger and their entire 3/4th lines are all punks with little respect for opponents. The only nice thing is this season in San Jose we are getting most of the back to backs with teams playing in LA flying to Oakland and getting into their hotels around 2am in San Jose
November 6th, 2008 at 11:49 AM
GM is not going to get money. in this environment, gov’t money equals gov’t control (to a certain extent). if the gov’t has say so, they would have to take a VERY hard line with the UAW, and that’s not going to happen right now.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:49 AM
I believe the proposal is and always has been, in the simplest terms, tax cuts for everyone under 200k, no change from 200k-250k, back to Clinton years for 250k+… 0 capital gains for small businesses.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:50 AM
TBL — If anyone complains, I’m blaming you for hijacking this thread with politics.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:51 AM
sharpton?

How can you not LOVE this??? so cute!

You’re right, Billy, there really is nothing redeeming about that team. Their team has a few veterans, but they’re all douchey ones.
And before all you fiscally conservative whiners get your panties in a bunch about Obama’s tax plan, keep in mind he’s in close contact with economists from the University of Chicago (some of the most intelligent people in the financial community) and will absolutely get their input on any financial proposal he decides to put on the table.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:53 AM
jpq:
if weekes = obama, i’m guessing devils fans aren’t fond of change?
November 6th, 2008 at 11:55 AM

Yeah, I heard Obama’s calling on pROFESSOR Bill Ayers to blow this whole system up & start over
/ZING!!
November 6th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
i corrected that for you. you’re welcome.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:55 AM
sportsgal, UC economists are also famously conservative. saying that to support your point, not to throw stones.
November 6th, 2008 at 11:56 AM
it helps if i typed “disguised” correctly. my bad.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:00 PM
professors who teach ecomomics are little more than philosophers with calculators.
i’d rather consult with the trumps, ichans and pickens of the world who know how to make millions rather than some arrogant, argyle-sweater wearing talking head who (if lucky) makes low six figures in a cushy tenured university gig.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:02 PM
@jimmy +1 for above
Also, Weekes is OK, but not for 3 or 4 months. More of a “spot starter”, imo. He caught lightning in a bottle for the Hurricanes
in their Cup year (w/ Ray Emery, of all people).
November 6th, 2008 at 12:02 PM
Since Obama has Buffett’s ear, you know, the guy who’s made BILLIONS, I guess he’ll be okay.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:09 PM
hopefully. i always though buffett to be a two-faced windbag (though a genius with a dollar bill). he used to whine about how he could be paying more taxes. hey warren, who’s stopping you from cutting a check to the treasury department, eh?
if your conscience is bothering you so much maybe if you wouldn’t write off all those “gifts” to nebraska football the feds would have a few more bucks to help sick kids, doncha think?
whenever someone of significant wealth claims they could pay more in taxes, ask them if they file an 1040-EZ form on april 15.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:15 PM
jimmy, jpq1999 — I understand your point of view, but government is not business. Irresponsible legislation that repeatedly gave in to the business community is one of the major reasons we are in this mess. What’s good for Trump, Ichans, and Pickens isn’t always good for the country. There’s a healthy middle.
And the insults towards college professors… it’s that kind of anti-intellectual attitude that has given the Republicans George Bush and Sarah Palin. Not exactly bright spots in the history of the party. Stick with guys like Eisenhower (President of Columbia), Friedman, and George HW… they serve your party (and the country) A LOT better.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:22 PM
but government is not business
Then why is our government now getting into the banking, mortgage and health care supervision businesses when they can’t handle what they do now?
jimmy’s point (well written, mine was a joke about Ayers), is that to listen to people who “theoretically” know how to do it but never have, when you have well respected businssmen/women who ARE DOING IT RIGHT NOW I think is foolish. There needs to be a bi-partisan/mixed group of advisors so that all points can be given and all agendas be exposed.
I want Obama to be the best president in history, believe me.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:25 PM
that’s the key phrase there. when people are making cash (ethically) that means people are working, people are spending money… et al.
two quick quibbles: eisenhower as president of columbia was an honorary position. if marshall/fdr picked, say, patton or macarthur to lead the allies in europe, you think columbia would have chosen ike as president?
also, one could make an argument old man bush did more to wreck the economy than his son.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:28 PM
no, i didn’t vote for the messiah, but i thought seriously about it. i like some of his issues.
but to suggest i don’t want obama to succeed is outrageous. like jpq, i hope he’s the best president i’ve ever seen. if any president does well — no matter who he is; no matter the party affiliation) all of us as americans are winners.
only your hardcore, narrow-minded jackasses want obama to fail.
November 6th, 2008 at 12:35 PM
your typing to pelosi’s ears. we have no business bailing out failed businesses. none. let’s hope you’re right.
and please don’t underestimate the idiocy of our government these days. they want to artificially help the stock market, wall street, failed businesses, homeowners, people in credit card debt … these is all too messy to begin talking about.
state pension funds are drying up, we can’t fund social security … guys, this is all going to be a nasty unwinding. hold onto your job and more importantly, stay in cash.
(don’t bother trying to buy gold coins – 1/10 of an ounce – because nobody’s selling them.)
November 6th, 2008 at 12:35 PM
only your hardcore, narrow-minded jackasses want obama to fail.
Like hanity & Limbaugh. They would take 4 years of shit, just so they can say “I told you so” in 2012.
Truth be told, Olbermann & the MSNBC crew did the same thing this year, imo
November 6th, 2008 at 12:43 PM
TBL — Are you stocking up on duct tape and canned goods yet?
The government bailing out failed businesses is terrible for everyone, no doubt.
It’s throwing away money. I would like to see the new administration stop this bullshit, and fulfill their promises for investment in renewable energy and mass transit. That’s energy security, long-term jobs, and infrastructure improvements.
I’m not saying the government should do the work, so don’t accuse me of that. Just make the investment, and let the private sector do the work. Do something useful with our tax dollars.
November 6th, 2008 at 2:03 PM
fwiw obama won 52% of the national vote of those who make over 200k a year
November 6th, 2008 at 2:47 PM
i’d like to punch that guy. better yet, choke him. he may be worse than olbermann which is saying quite a bit.
