Daunte’s Big Day
NFL November 9th. 2008, 12:50pm
This would be a truly promising headline for Lions fans if their team had already played today, but no, this is about the beginning of the Daunte Culpepper era in Detroit.
He’s got today’s game against Jacksonville and seven more to try and revive his career. Actually, scratch that dramatic thought, this is the NFL and he’s a quarterback. Regardless of what happens today he’ll have opportunities well into his late 30s if he desires so.
For the long suffering fans of this franchise, I’m guessing they await and expect sure disaster this afternoon. And with the Jaguars coming to town after losing last week to a previously winless Bengals team, you’d be hard pressed to think they won’t be leaving Detroit with a win. But the Jags bring some issues of their own, so don’t put on your favorite gameday garbage bag just yet.
After a 34-7 blowout loss to the Bears, Detroit has very much been in each of their last four games, losing close ones to the Vikings, Texans, Redskins and the Bears again.
That was with Orlovsky at quarterback. It’s Daunte today.
So will it be easier for him to step in on a team whose season is already over? Will he be able to relax and find some magic with big target Calvin Johnson like he once did with Moss? (Johnson does have a TD in each of his last four games.)
Remember when Culpepper did stuff like this, this and this? And we got so used to him doing this?
Who knows what happened to him, but maybe playing in a dome will bring back some of that Minnesota magic. Gotta hang on to something.

November 9th, 2008 at 1:10 PM
wow, cassell TD run just as Thomas jones gets in
bills foolishly didn’t throw a challenge flag on a welker catch
November 9th, 2008 at 1:15 PM
Bears have fourth and one at the Titans 15 early.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:15 PM
Orlovsky was really playing pretty well. Hope he gets a shot with a franchise who deserves him …
November 9th, 2008 at 1:16 PM
Forte gets it! Takes it inside the 10. First and goal.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:17 PM
god i hope mendenhall ends up being good because parker is the most fragile back in the league. the exact opposite kind of running back the steelers need.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:20 PM
Matt Ryan is everything the NFL wishes Brady Quinn was.
/maybe one day greatness won’t be preordained because the guy’s pretty and went to the right school
November 9th, 2008 at 1:23 PM
jets 10-0. looks too easy. even without jackson, rams will rally
November 9th, 2008 at 1:24 PM
It’s WAY too early, but I’m sensing a sort of “the Metrodome is a house of horrors for Aaron Rodgers” thing, like Favre in the 90s.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:26 PM
God, I love having Megatron on my fantasy team.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:29 PM
bulger drilled, fumbles, pace picks it up and rumbles 50 for the TD
17-0 with 4:45 left in the first
November 9th, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Boy, those Jets are just havin’ fun out here.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:30 PM
man, bulger got jacked. his back has to be all fucked up after that hit.
woo-hoo, 17-0
i think the rams are challenging whether it was a pass or not
November 9th, 2008 at 1:31 PM
i’m fucking sick of STL saying Jackson is probable and then not playing him. this is two, maybe three, weeks in a row i started that fucker.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:34 PM
This Saints/Falcons game is my first experience with Tony Boselli. Man, he sucks. No wonder he got this game. I mean, I know the networks have a certain “ex-USC player” quota to fill, but they really need to find someone else. He has the presence and delivery of that guy who does your high school’s football games on AM radio.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:35 PM
what happened to Culpepper? Stanton had a TD pass?
November 9th, 2008 at 1:35 PM
I think the Vikings should just forfeit all of their 2nd round picks, cause they all suck.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Boselli is a poor man’s poor man’s Tim Green.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:36 PM
shit i forgot to set my lineup this week. oh well my team sucks ass anyways.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Uhh Benji he was ruled out on Friday
November 9th, 2008 at 1:37 PM
fetch – Sidney Rice and EJ Henderson don’t suck.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:38 PM
FUMBLE!!!!
November 9th, 2008 at 1:42 PM
That’s true weeze. I was more referring to Tarvaris and Ryan Cook.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:42 PM
Holy crap, Moose Johnston – take a BREATH!!
November 9th, 2008 at 1:43 PM
diesel, sportsline had him as probably last night when i set my lineup.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:43 PM
diesel, sportsline had him as probably last night when i set my lineup.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:43 PM
fuck
November 9th, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Culpepper 2/4 for 78 yards and a pick.
Stanton 1/1 for 1 yard and a TD.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:44 PM
I hate having McGahee, and some other dude in my league had a higher waiver claim for Ray Rice. What a waste of a second-round fantasy pick.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:46 PM
Ryan Longwell just absolutely crushed one from 54.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:46 PM
Again NFL, I’m in Texas. If the fucking Cowboys have a bye week, you can at least give me the Saints as the NFC game. GB-Min can suck my…
fuck, TD Turner for the Falcs. 14-3. Never mind….
November 9th, 2008 at 1:46 PM
The Saints are phoning it in again today. This looks like another Carolina game like 3 weeks ago.
No way it’s that the Falcons are this good, right?
Right?
November 9th, 2008 at 1:47 PM
diesel, sportsline had him as probably last night when i set my lineup.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:47 PM
Note to NFL teams, on third and long Kerry Collins is GOING to throw to Brandon Jones over the middle. Every time. Please begin to defense this.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
+JS, Nick
November 9th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Benji I generally only check Rotoworld or ESPN, he was out on Friday in both places. As was Willie Parker, since I have both on my work league team.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Why does Detroit hate Stanton so much? He couldn’t be bad enough not to beat Orlovsky for the backup job, or a washed up QB only signed a week ago could he?
November 9th, 2008 at 1:49 PM
benji-SJax will most likely miss at least the next two games. You need another source if Sportsline had him as Probable. You’d be better off listening to Matthew Berry.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:49 PM
The Falcons are that good at home. The Saints are that bad on the road.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:49 PM
Is there anyway I can watch the bears game online?
November 9th, 2008 at 1:50 PM
brad smith … good stuff, kid
jets about to go up 24-0 …
November 9th, 2008 at 1:50 PM

November 9th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
jeez cabbage, burning the candle at both ends i see.
wow, I just noticed Jared Allen is playing this week. That guy has earned his money this year.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Siragusa sounds like he’s got cheeseburgers hidden under his tongue.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
I’m about to abandon the Saints. Can’t watch the games(I work most Sunday, doesn’t make sense to get NFL package). I’ve lived away from New Orleans for 9 years now. And they ALWAYS….
Good play Henderson!!!!
November 9th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
NickP, on fire today.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Nick fuck you I clicked with the quickness.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:52 PM
Great player headline on Rotoworld right now: “Steelers dump Dookie Davenport again”
November 9th, 2008 at 1:52 PM
TJ another TD run
24-0
1205 left in the second
blowout city baby …
November 9th, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Tony Richardson is an unstoppable beast.

@Bo: Peace offering. Legit link, but sound isn’t the best.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:55 PM
Who else here requires a play-by-play update of the Jets-Rams?
November 9th, 2008 at 1:55 PM
damn you pennington! pick 6 gets seattle right back in the mix
November 9th, 2008 at 1:55 PM
14-6 Falcons. Abraham gets his first sack of the day. Jammal Brown has gone from Pro Bowl to just plain bad in less than a year and a half.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Nick thanks good lookin.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
a rodgers safety! i’ll take it!
minny 12-7
November 9th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Kerry Collins ties it up against Da Bears.
November 9th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Brad Childress is the worst playcaller I’ve ever seen.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:00 PM
Are they rotating Culpepper and Stanton in and out?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:00 PM
will blackmon is a dumb fuck.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
So is Mars Blackmon.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Brad Childress is making Vikings fans pine for the days of Bob Schnelker.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:05 PM
Vikes need to bring back Bud Grant and move back outside.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:05 PM
Childress looks just like my step dad, who also lives in MN. It’s kind of scary actually.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:07 PM
Brad Childress is the worst playcaller I’ve ever seen.
You didn’t watch the Vikings/Saints game very closely, did you?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:08 PM
You haven’t watched any Vikings games since 2006 very closely, have you?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:09 PM
Seriously, is it too much to ask for to get the Saints to force a turnover more often than once every two or three games?
I know it has a lot to do with cycles, but we’re talking three years now–coincidentally, Gary Gibbs’ tenure as defensive coordinator.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Anyone watching the Packers/Vikings game think they could hear Charles Gordon’s ankle break during the play? Fox proceeded to show the play close up including a pause with his foot pointing the wrong way. nasty.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:12 PM
When Brad Childress runs a (fumbled) reverse to get a first down and ice the game with 2 minutes left to go against the Bucs and playoff contention on the line, then we’ll talk.
Or running Aaron Stecker up the middle on 4th and 3 with Drew Brees, Deuce McAllister, Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, Lance Moore, and Devery Henderson at your disposal.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:18 PM
Yea that Charles Gordon thing was nasty.
The only coach I’ve seen rival the shittiness of Brad Childress is Mike Tice.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:20 PM
This Bears-Titans game to quote Jim Ross “is a real slobberknocker.”
November 9th, 2008 at 2:23 PM
FUCK JOE BUCK
November 9th, 2008 at 2:23 PM
favre not actually having a great half – he had 2 terrible throws that should have been picks, but were dropped – and if they go up 37-0 here in the first half … does he even come out for the 2nd half?
They’re inside the 10 yard line with the 2-minute warning upon us.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:23 PM
Ed “guns” hochuli, very polite.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:24 PM
stanton got in on the goal line I guess because he knows the plays better for the lions and they dont wanna mess it up on the goal line, culpepper has been in every other play besides when they were inside the 10
November 9th, 2008 at 2:27 PM
37-0 jets on the favre TD pass.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:28 PM
Another safety for the Vikings.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:29 PM
thanks, saints, for NOT going for it on 4th down when you were in FG range there at the end of the half.
falcons 17, saints 6
this is a surprise, to me at least.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:30 PM
rams fumble. wow. 11 seconds left in the half, and they commit a 4th TO.
jets have it at the Rams 40 … give it a shot in the end zone?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:31 PM
Where the fuck is Bernard Berrien?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:32 PM
jets attempting a 55-yarder … got it!
40-0 at the half!!!!
November 9th, 2008 at 2:33 PM
Shit, Pack intercept a pass intended for the snitch.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:33 PM
What a terrible fucking throw. Next year’s starter Graham Harrell will make that throw everytime.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:34 PM
i have minnys defense but safeties are only worth two points in my league, thats retarded
November 9th, 2008 at 2:37 PM
the guy im playing has the redskins kicker on a bye, so he happened to pick up the jets kicker, who has 20 points at halftime
November 9th, 2008 at 2:37 PM
did jared allen ring up that 2nd safety? thought he was hurt?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:37 PM
Shouldn’t be
November 9th, 2008 at 2:38 PM
painful!
November 9th, 2008 at 2:39 PM
why is it retarded? Do you want more than 6 points for a touchdown? Also, don’t you get two points for the sack as well?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Eating peanuts for a week is retarded. Safties are worth two points.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:43 PM
only one point for sacks
November 9th, 2008 at 2:44 PM
dierdorf just said “unmolested”
November 9th, 2008 at 2:44 PM
in the context of my league its retarded especially considering three of the five field goal categories are worth four points or more.
im crushing the guy anyways
November 9th, 2008 at 2:44 PM
I started Chris Johnson (-4 yds rushing at the half) over MJD (3 TD).
I can use Oldtimers Disease for an excuse, anyone dumber than me?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:53 PM
Dierdorf with the “one pump, two pump, three pump”
Sounds like Fetch’s Saturday nights
November 9th, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Shouldn’t be a surprise that the Saints are laying an egg. Every time you think they’re turning the corner, they have a loss that sets them back 4 weeks.
That being said, it surprises me.
Offensive stats are extremely even. It’s just that the Falcons are executing better on the other side of the field.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:54 PM
whos this jerry porter guy that just scored for the jags?
November 9th, 2008 at 2:55 PM
im this fucking close to cutting lynch and taking my chances with lj getting on the field at some point this season. you suck buffalo
November 9th, 2008 at 2:55 PM
Man, the Titans take me back to Ohio State in 2002. They start every possession near midfield or better, and every punt gets downed inside the 10.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Moleman, I can see KC running the dogshit out of LJ the last two or three weeks of the season, showcasing him before trying to unload him.
And Rex Grossman SUCKS bigtime.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
I wish I could last that long Diesel.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:19 PM
Thanks to some trickeration Atlanta now up 27-6.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
The Titans are for real folks. They don’t do anything spectacular, but make their opponents look bad in all aspects of the game. Oldtime smashmouth football.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
Grossman > Jarrett Lee
27 – 6 Falcs? Where is this “offensive genius” Payton at? 6 points against the Falcons is bullshit.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:28 PM
BREES FOR MVP!
November 9th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
I guess it’s time for Brees to pad his stats… TD McAllister
November 9th, 2008 at 3:34 PM
how does detroit have only 15 pass attempts as a team down 38-7?
November 9th, 2008 at 3:34 PM
benji will blackmon called and hopes he’s back on your good side.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:36 PM
I freakin’ love the Lions.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:42 PM
So does Amobi Okoye suck or what? I see he’s out today but I also see he has 11 tackles and zero sacks for the year.
I thought that guy could lift small towns.
November 9th, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I can’t believe Rodgers keeps getting up after these hits. He is getting drilled and he already has a bad shoulder. Tougher than he is smart, I guess.
