Let’s Get Those Final Four Picks In
College Basketball, Video November 10th. 2008, 12:30pmIt has been seven months since Mario Chalmers swished this improbable triple to send the National Championship into overtime, where Kansas prevailed over Memphis. The season begins tonight – most teams open this weekend, though – and we want your picks.
Here was our preseason Top 5 last year, and three of them ended up in the Final Four (we had Kansas sixth), but that means nothing because all four No. 1 seeds advanced to San Antonio.
We’ll put together a haphazard Top 20 (projecting where everyone will end up at season’s end) later in the day. And now, onto the picks …
Final Four:
North Carolina – Too obvious. Lost nobody, no discernible weaknesses.
Connecticut – We’ve got the Huskies winning the title. Feeling a bit jinxed seeing Thabeet on the cover of ESPN the Mag, but we made this call back in April and we’re sticking with it.
Gonzaga – Hate this pick because Austin Daye isn’t 100 percent healthy … but it’s no fun following the crowd and taking Louisville and UCLA.
Michigan State - Tempted to take a longshot here (Arizona State, Villanova, Oklahoma or even Wake Forest) but we’ll go with the Spartans because they’re not nearly as one-dimensional on offense as they were last year, and they’re just as good defensively.

Pitt tricks people every year into thinking they are better than they are. They are a Sweet 16 team at best.

davidson isnt going to make the tournament. either UTC or CoC upset them in the socon finals and they don’t get an at large bid.

I like the bold statement moleman. It’s all going to depend on how well Curry adapts to playing PG; can he be a distributor? I think it will be fun to find out.

theres a good chance their only ‘good’ win is going to be against nc state, and thats going to be a close game. they play west virginia on the road and should win but i dont think wvu is going to be anywhere near good this year.
they arent beating duke and purdue.

By the way, for anybody picking Tennessee, Frosh PG Daniel West is out for the season due to academic ineligibility.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:11 PM
North Carolina, Texas, Wake Forest and Florida.
I’ve been picking UNC over Texas for several years now, so I’ll just stick with that for this year. Go Heels!

@sparty/miz- both previews were good. If i had to vote, i would vote for Sparty. No song lyrics = better post. Let me know if you guys write about Miami
November 10th, 2008 at 1:27 PM
irish- email me. we could arrange that.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:27 PM
@irish – we’re covering conferences soon so Miami will be in there, likely not as in-depth though since none of us are as familiar with the program. we’ve got a Florida preview by gatortrey this week and I’m finishing up the individual teams’ previews with a Memphis one next week.

November 10th, 2008 at 1:34 PM
@maggs – unfortunately, the more I think about it, the less convinced I am that Tennessee can make such a deep run this year. I hope so, but there’s a lot of new pieces.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:35 PM
sums him up pretty well. might be faster than lawson.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:40 PM

FWIW I don’t know shit about NCAA Basketball (outside of Michigan).
November 10th, 2008 at 1:40 PM
yeah, James Lawson
November 10th, 2008 at 1:41 PM
@maggs – then your picks will probably be as accurate as anybody else’s in these comments.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:42 PM
Maggs – pick your favorite unis. those people always win the pools.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:43 PM
UCLA (Jrue Holliday is this year’s Derrick Rose)
UNC (way way way too much talent)
Louisville
Marquette
Notre Dame is my darkhorse
Other random predictions: UConn will shit the bed, Tubby Smith will have Minnesota contending for a Big Ten title, Kansas will be no better than a 5 seed, and Duke is BACK*
*Back as in getting a 1 or 2 seed and losing in the sweet 16

November 10th, 2008 at 1:45 PM
Well I know SOME thing about it, me being a dude and all, but I don’t know shit about who is coming back and what not. Although Michigan does has two potential NBA level talent guys… so I figure they are due to be invited to the tourney this year. Book it.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:47 PM
Michigan should be better this year. We are still gonna kill them.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:50 PM
Take great pride in that Sparty.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:50 PM
I just want to win at Wisconsin. Bo Ryan owns Izzo.
November 10th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Other random crap I’ll throw in just so I have the time earmarked so I’ll look like a GENIUS when this happens:
Gonzaga will do what they always do – get shafted in the seedings and lose in the 2nd round anyway
Tennessee will disappoint and be a bubble team
Purdue will win both the Big Ten conference title and the Big Ten tournament
Spastic-T will win his 2nd straight National Player of the Year award, right after which Jay Bilas will be caught fellating him in a random bathroom stall in Durham
November 10th, 2008 at 1:54 PM
One more for the road: AJ Price will have a complete shit game that’s nationally televised, causing TBL to flip out and dedicate a post to him being the “worst player in college basketball”.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:03 PM
UNC, Louisville, Notre Dame, Oklahoma
This year’s Cinderella: Va Commonwealth
Most underrated player in the country: Devin Downey, SCarolina (the 2nd coming of Iverson, IMO)
November 10th, 2008 at 2:13 PM
College basketball is not even on my radar until mid-January.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:15 PM
I don’t see that happening this year. I think that they’ll be in the top 10 for just about the entire year and be something like a 3 or 4 seed. This is the best Gonzaga team ever; if Heytvelt plays like he did 2 years ago (pre-shrooms) and not like he did last year with the injuries, there isn’t a roster in the nation that is as strong as them (North Carolina notwithstanding).
November 10th, 2008 at 2:22 PM
Raivio being gone is addition by subtraction, and Pargo is the real deal, but all this bluster about Heytfelt is wishful thinking. There comes a point when you just know what you’re getting from somebody. I think we saw that last year.
November 10th, 2008 at 2:48 PM

November 10th, 2008 at 2:52 PM
Raivio’s been gone for a while now, so no anything by anything there.
Heytvelt averaged 10 and 5 per last year, missed the first 11 games, and played most of the season injured and limited minutes. He’s a seven footer who shoots over 50% from the field and can hit the three. If he stays healthy he’ll be around 18/8 this season.
