Top Shelf: Boston Wins Its Sixth Straight
NHL November 14th. 2008, 11:15am
Lee Diekemper on the night in the NHL.
Penguins 5, Flyers 4 (SO): Seemingly in control with a 3-0 lead in the second, the Pens did their best to give the game away, allowing back-to-back Simon Gagne shorthanded goals as the Flyers took a 4-3 lead in the second. Pens goalie Dany Sabourin thieved Mike Richards of a goal in the shootout. Alex Goligoski’s shootout goal was the game-winner. In a Steel City ritual, Goligoski was forced to choke down an Iron City.
Bruins 6, Canadians 1: Boston snapped a 12-game losing streak to the hated Canadians and in the process won its fifth straight. Marco Sturm’s pair of goals was enough. Bill Belichick confessed he was distracted in the first half of the Patriots loss last night as he had Dave Goucher piped in to his headset.
Red Wings 4, Lighting 3: Trailing 2-0, the Wings broke loose with four straight. An embarrassed Barry Melrose channeled his inner Lee Corso and wore Thunderbug’s head as he left the Ice Palace.
Wild 4, Coyotes 0: Strong special teams play by the Wild. Minnesota scored all four goals on the power play, including two from Marek Zidlicky. Accidentally walking into a restroom of a private suite, a fan found Al Franken to be a little too excited over the outcome.

Hmmm… the one time I can actually go to a game and Lee ignores it in his recap. I was there to see the Islanders completely outwork the Senators last night. I would be embarrassed to be a Sens fan today, that’s how bad it was. The best part, besides the free tickets in the lower bowl, was hearing Ottawa get booed off the ice at the end of the game.

Alex Goligoski is the man. That’s my insightful analysis of the day.

hartnell’s losing shootout attempt was quite possibly the worst shootout attempt ever
