Donovan McNabb is a Big Picture Guy
NFL November 17th. 2008, 2:30pm
Yesterday, the Eagles and Bengals battled to the first tie in the NFL since 2002. In the post-game press conference, Donovan McNabb confessed that he didn’t know there were ties in the NFL. (Video after the jump)
Today a lot of people are going to be asking questions about why he wouldn’t know a rule that seemingly the most casual fan would be aware of. This is a fair question, but I think we need to delve a little deeper. Stop for a moment and consider the fact that McNabb has been in the league since 1999. In that time he’s quarterbacked a team to the Super Bowl and been to the playoffs numerous times. Just last season the Eagles finished with an 8-8 record and just missed the playoffs.
With that in mind, I have to believe that at some point in his
10-year career he’s glanced at the standings. Perhaps he wanted to see if his team had a shot at a first round bye or figure out how many teams were vying for the wild card. So if we are to believe he’s looked at official NFL standings, he would have seen that column filled with zeros with the T on top. That T column is in every major newspaper. It’s on the official NFL website. If you’ve seen real standings, you’ve seen that T.
Didn’t he ever wonder what the T stood for?
Does he not understand the game Win, Lose, or Draw?
Is he curious what that long piece of fabric is that’s hanging from Tom Brady’s neck?
Is he confused when Andy Reid talks about his kids?
Does he know what his mom is serving him?

T is for … time to leave?
even the nhl got rid of ties for fucks sake. THE NHL

I’m just happy I convinced stupid Eagles fans to make a bet with me about the Eagle at Ravens game in a couple weeks. We’re going to kill Kevin Kolb.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:37 PM
He must have been really confused when Andy Reid dialed up that Hail Mary from their own 37 with seven seconds left to play.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:37 PM
What a moron.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:37 PM
The best part about the video was the part when the reporter asked ‘Seriously?’. They must have played that clip about 20 times on the Dan Patrick show today.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Oh Man I think he should be shot!
November 17th, 2008 at 2:41 PM
I didn’t know there were ties in NFL games either.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Bernard Hopkins knew there were ties.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Well, now that he knows he can tie, that just explains why he melts down at the end of close games and screws up the clock management part of the game, with the assist from his coach.
Maybe Andy Reid didn’t know either.

Donovan’s Wednesday press conference should be fun.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:45 PM
I think this was originally said by Lincoln and it is easily the dumbest thing he ever said.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:49 PM
I can’t believe an entire post was generated on the fact that Donovan McNabb said he didn’t know there were ties in the NFL. This is really a reach today. I’m all for calling out stupid people, but it’s not like the guy said he thought the world is flat.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:50 PM
Maggs, that’s because you don’t listen to the announcers.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:52 PM
i think it IS a big deal. if McNabb knew there were ties then he would have played with a sense of urgency that he lacked in the over time period. this game could end up haunting the eagles in race for a play off spot. not knowing the situation you’re in, especially a situation that most people watching knew, is unacceptable…
November 17th, 2008 at 2:55 PM
if mcnabb knew he was running out of time, he probably would’ve started dry-heaving in the huddle again. then again, he probably woulda thrown a pick-six and the game wouldve ended sans tie.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:55 PM
not sure why people are acting like the eagles were the ones in position to win the game as time was about to expire, i really dont think this had any impact on the game. mcnabb looks better if that fieldgoal is good, that makes no sense

November 17th, 2008 at 2:56 PM
In the context of the NFL, of course it’s a huge deal. He’s a starting QB who’s been in the league for 10 years and doesn’t know a rule that most casual fans are aware of. Did you see him laughing it up on the field? Poor guy thought he still had more time left to get a win.
November 17th, 2008 at 2:57 PM
if McNabb knew there were ties then he would have played with a sense of urgency that he lacked in the over time period.
Can you prove he lacked urgency?
November 17th, 2008 at 3:03 PM
donovan mcnabb:not being aware of ties::crm:not being aware of a jets game on at his house
btw crm, 13 teams scored less than 20 yesterday.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:04 PM
OK, so now Donovan is the offensive coordinator and head coach? You’re telling me Donovan played less intense even though he knew THE FIRST TEAM TO SCORE IN OT WINS THE GAME?
November 17th, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Shit man if he would have hurried up he would have thrown another pick and they would have lost instead of tied.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:08 PM
in donovan’s defense, andy reid was busy locking up his propecia and viagra so his son doesn’t get it and marty morningweg (know it’s spelled wrong) is…well, he is who we thought he was.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:09 PM
I think he was channeling Ralph Wiggum more than he was channeling Uncle Leo.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:10 PM
That’s not really fair. After the play is called, it’s then on the QB to find his reads and make the play, whether it be a check-down, a throw-away, going for it all, etc. I don’t think the fact that Donovan didn’t know the OT rules affected this game at all, but it certainly could have.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:10 PM
Yes, similar to if it was the end of the 1st quarter versus the end of the half, or similarly 3rd/4th quarter.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
CRM,
Are those standings a desktop photo you took? If so, how does one do that from his or her own desktop? Is it software already on the PC? I have Vista if that helps. Also, I’m being serious.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:14 PM
whether it directly effected him in that situation or not is debatable.. the point is an NFL quarterback needs to know the rules of the game he plays and has been playing for many years, the leader of the team needs to know the situation..
November 17th, 2008 at 3:16 PM
NDub you update your blog just as much as CRM, maybe even less.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:19 PM
I call BS. Any ref would tell you that most of the players don’t know all of the rules.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:20 PM
whether it directly effected him in that situation or not is debatable
I’m not even going to argue with someone who doesn’t know the difference between affected and effected.

November 17th, 2008 at 3:21 PM
McNabb isn’t dumb for not knowing the NFL has ties. He’s dumb for admitting that he didn’t know the NFL had ties during a press conference.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:22 PM
do you think any ref would tell you that most players thought that the playoffs or the superbowl can end in a tie? how can a person be involved with the nfl for so long and think that those games could end in a tie… it blows my mind.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:23 PM
IPAG with the win!
November 17th, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Why is it dumb to admit you don’t know something?
November 17th, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Good lord, you people really know how to blow something way out of proportion. Can someone please tell me how this game ended? Did Philly even have the ball when time expired in OT?
Ben, I don’t see how your comparison works in this situation. As I said before, all anyone needs to do in the OT is score a point. You’re telling me Donovan wasn’t trying to get his team down the field as fast as possible to score a point just because he thought he’d have all fucking day to finish the game?
November 17th, 2008 at 3:26 PM
@youngstown
Did you read what I wrote? It doesn’t contain the words Super Bowl or play-offs anywhere.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:26 PM
Well, the Eagles defense was playing great all day, so I can see Donovan having faith in them to get the ball back for him. In fact, isn’t that why he was joking around with his teammates on the sidelines with a couple minutes left? No worries!
November 17th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
In light of all this crap, the NFL reeeeeeally needs Red Cashen back.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:27 PM
i don’t want someone leading my team that hasn’t paid close enough attention to the sport he’s played for the past ten years to not even know some of the most basic rules..
November 17th, 2008 at 3:29 PM
@maggs
i read what you wrote. but one of the rules that he also doesn’t know is the rule that they play playoff games out til they get a winner. i was just mentioning another crucial rule that he didn’t know…
November 17th, 2008 at 3:30 PM
Correct. I get going on it hard for like 2-3 weeks then I just fail for about 2-3 months. I suppose I should actually write on it or just delete it.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:30 PM
It’s dumb when you’re the starting quarterback. It doesn’t exactly instill confidence in the troops when the general goes on TV and says he doesn’t know the rules of the game.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:31 PM
This is a pretty big thing not to know. It’s not like it’s the tuck rule or something more obscure than that. To admit you don’t know something can be a sign of humility and intelligence. To admit, during a press conference, that you don’t know the rules of a game you’ve been playing for 10 years, that’s unacceptable. Think about it, Donovan, why is there a clock on overtime? If you keep playing until someone scores, why is it timed? This could fall under a common sense issue, too.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Ben, I don’t see how your comparison works in this situation. As I said before, all anyone needs to do in the OT is score a point. You’re telling me Donovan wasn’t trying to get his team down the field as fast as possible to score a point just because he thought he’d have all fucking day to finish the game?
That’s exactly what I’m telling you. There’s no sense of urgency in his play if he’s on his own 35 with one minute left if he thinks he can play into the second overtime. His mindset would be completely different if he realized he had one minute to score and not one minute plus the next overtime.

November 17th, 2008 at 3:37 PM
Unacceptable to whom? You all act as though Donovan is accountable to you in some way. If anything he is accountable to only his team mates and the owners of the team. he is in no way accountable to you as a fan. And to most of you who don’t even follow the Eagles, he has zero accountablity to any of you. If you all don’t like him then that is fine, you can admit that, but to say he is stupid for not knowing this rule is idiotic. To say he in anyway owes it to you to know the rule is even more stupid. He doesn’t owe you anything, the sooner you realize that as fans the sooner you will have a bettr time watching sports and being a sports fan in general. You guys should try not having a winning record for 20 years and see how well you think Donovan knows the rules then.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:39 PM
OMG, Donovan McNabb shouldn’t be allowed to play quarterback because he wasn’t aware there are ties in regular season games! This is the most horrible offense in all of football! The Eagles should just get rid of McNabb and start a QB who knows about ties but doesn’t know how to read defensive coverages or learn a playbook!! OFF WITH HIS HEAD!
November 17th, 2008 at 3:41 PM
The hilarious thing is that the entire focus today is on how dumb he is for not knowing the rules, and not on how absolutely terrible he was as a QB yesterday. I think this was just a clever ploy to divert attention from his gameplay.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:41 PM
This doesn’t explain why the offensive coordinator or head coach would decide to call a certain play that wouldn’t give them a first down or the chance to score.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:42 PM
no, donovan mcnabb shouldn’t be allowed to play QB because he’s black.
/nickP
November 17th, 2008 at 3:43 PM
Certainly if Mcnabb and the Eagles were having an Eli Manning/Giants type of season, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal. This just gets added on to the increasingly valid notion that Mcnabb shrinks in close game situations, and makes dumb decisions sometimes.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:47 PM
Who said that? If someone said that, I’d agree that they’re over-reacting.
Who said that? If someone said that, I’d agree that they’re over-reacting.
Who said that? If someone said that, I’d agree that they’re over-reacting.
Who said that? If someone said that, I’d agree that they’re over-reacting.
The thing is though that I haven’t seen anyone saying any of those things. The only thing I’ve seen is people making fun of him for not knowing a rule that’s pretty well-known to everyone except for him and Maggs. He had one of those moments when he was on camera admitting that he’s ignorant (when it comes to this). And we’re making fun of it. That is all.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:48 PM

November 17th, 2008 at 3:55 PM
To me it is just another sign of how really bad McNabb is for a QB that is generally regarded by the media and casual fans as being really good. He’s still trying to recover from that Super Bowl loss. Couple the fact that he doesn’t know about the tie rule, then was dense enough to comment on what would happen in the playoffs with his horrible play, and seemingly can’t beat the Bengals. That tells me he is just completely unaware of his surroundings, whether it be on or off the field.
BTW, he is still aware of the fact that Brian Westbrook is back from injury and on the field, right?
November 17th, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I think the spelling “errors” were for sportsgal, not you Maggs.

Well, at least the discussion was kept in a rational and even-keeled tone and you responded with a counterpoint and not a bunch of mindless blathering and slinging statements no one used.
Regardless of the play called, there is a difference in the quarterback’s decision making process, risks he is willing to take/averse to taking, decisions to get out of bounds on a scramble, etc., that are a direct influence of the time on the clock, or the time he thinks is on the clock.

November 17th, 2008 at 4:18 PM
TSH, are you serious? It was a tie. What do you think this whole thing has been about? McNabb didn’t know you could tie in football.

Ben, you will never be able to convince me that Donovan McNabb completely changed the way he played yesterday in OT just because he didn’t know it could end in a tie. The object of OT is to score first, so every offensive drive is important regardless of the time on the clock.
Also, my ridiculous comment was in response to youngstown’s equally ridiculous comment that he would never want a QB on his team that didn’t know a game could end in a tie.

Maggs, the fact you can’t see the difference says a lot about you.
“Ahhhh, and another piece of the puzzle falls into place.”
/Resorting to ~12 year old Seinfeld quotes.

Ok, I thought I was having another “I don’t get it. /sportsgal’d” moment.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:22 PM
and he’s a steelers’ fan of all teams…his QB can’t chew and walk at the same time, let alone be aware of the rules of the game.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:26 PM
I was curious how this post had this many comments. Now I know.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:27 PM
Haha!
McNabb >>> J Russell, Thigpen, Flacco, Ferrotte, Orton, Garcia (or Griese), etc
November 17th, 2008 at 5:29 PM
Sorry I am late to the party. This is only MONDAY of Michigan/tOSU week? What is Maggs gonna be like by Friday? Yikes!!
As the immortal Flounder once said “Oh, boy is this great!!!”
November 17th, 2008 at 5:30 PM
What exactly do you think I am? I am a 25 year old kid who gets bored at work from time to time. I would appreciate if one day went by where Mike NYC wouldn’t link up to something stupid or Nick P. wouldn’t personally attack me and then I get blaimed for it, or younsgtown wouldn’t post up a comment as if he is the end all of knowledge about everything. You all think I am some sick little guy in some basement that hates America. I am a normal person who disagrees with you and you can’t deal with it. You take up the gang mentality because it is easier for you rather than thinking that hey, maybe Donovan McNabb isn’t an idiot because he made one slip of the tongue. Imagine that. I wish I could follow all of you assholes around all day and see how many times you all fuck up.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:32 PM

sportsgal: McNabb is greater than the first three basic “rookies” and the other two “journeymen”. 50/50 on Garcia. The point is, this guy is touted as an “elite” QB who’s played 10 years in the league and doesn’t know the rules.
Maggs was right in that he doesn’t owe the fans anything, but he owes the guys in the room with him and the guy who gave him $100 million to know what 95% of thepeople posting on this thread knew.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:32 PM
Maggs, that you can’t see yourself for what you are is amazing.
Second, you can follow most of us around all day and see that we know the basic tenets of our jobs. Everyone screws up. Not knowing a base rule to one’s profession is profoundly idiotic.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:36 PM
As roman might say, “waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH”
November 17th, 2008 at 5:38 PM
Ben, what am I?
November 17th, 2008 at 5:38 PM
And it wasn’t a “slip of the tongue.” He fully admitted that he didn’t know the rule. For that, he’s an idiot.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:38 PM
Sorry, jpq, I didn’t have time to run through the list of all 32+ QBs in the league and write out which ones are better than McNabb. And can we REALLY assume every single QB knows there are ties in football? It might be a basic rule, but I guarantee McNabb isn’t the only person who wasn’t aware it existed. Not only that, but I think it’s incredibly naive to assume this fact really affected the outcome of the game. That would be the same thing as assuming all QBs don’t play hard unless they’re in a 2 minute drill in the 4th quarter with the game on the line.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Wow, I go to the gym for a couple hours and I come back and this thread is up to 138 posts. Nice work, fellas.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:40 PM
So Mike, what is it that you do?
November 17th, 2008 at 5:42 PM
Eviscerate your “arguments” on a near-daily basis?
November 17th, 2008 at 5:43 PM
@sportsgal: whatever. not in a mood to keep up a goofy discussion. If you can’t step back from the comments and see that a man who is supposedly one of the top 5 QB’s in the league doesn’t even know that a game can be tied after OT is completely ridiculous, then so be it.
You are right in that I think there are LOTS of plyers that probably don’t know the rule, which is a discussion for another day (“old school” players vs “nu skool” and how much they care about football or care about the check and the lifestyle).
November 17th, 2008 at 5:43 PM
Maggs…you’re an enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a mystery.
sportsgal…there is a difference in the quarterback’s decision making process, risks he is willing to take/averse to taking, decisions to get out of bounds on a scramble, etc., that are a direct influence of the time on the clock, or the time he thinks is on the clock. It has nothing to do with effort and everything to do with the decisions and risk/reward tolerance.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:43 PM
How very candid. You should be proud of yourself.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:50 PM
Ben, so I am an old Batman movie quote? Is that what I am supposed to see for myself that I am? How enlightening. You should go door to door with that brilliance.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:57 PM
Maggs, I haven’t seen the old Batman movies, I didn’t know that’s where the quote originated.
A more complete answer might be that you’re reactionary and it’s entertaining (definitely more than work). You either twist what people say, misunderstand it, or ignore it, and go flying off the handle with a retort that has misses the mark. It certainly doesn’t happen all the time though, but when it does, it’s amusing to watch. It’s entertaining, if not entirely beneficial to the conversation at hand.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Sorry you’re having a bad day, jpq.
Ben, here is why I don’t agree with your QB decision-making argument:
1. You don’t account for the play calling (done by the coaching staff). Yes, I realize McNabb is the one throwing the ball, but his job is to execute the offensive play selected by the coaches. The coaches are just as responsible for time clock management as the QB.
2. I have a hard time believing a QB wouldn’t play to win the game on every drive in OT when they’re in a “first score wins” situation. The goal is to score on your drive because if the other team gets the ball back and makes it to field goal range, the game is over.
3. Didn’t the Bengals have the ball to end the game?
November 17th, 2008 at 6:05 PM
1. The play-calling is part of it, as is the execution when deciding to hit the receiver over the middle versus the one on the sideline, taking a chance deep versus getting the first down, scrambling to the middle of the field versus scrambling out of bounds. All of those things have a component based on what the clock is doing at the given time, no time more so than when it’s running out.
2. Of course he’s playing to win, but that’s not the point. It’s a matter of HOW he plays. See point one above for the differences in how he executes the play given different clock situations. Whether or not he thinks he’ll get another a second overtime with a tied score will directly play into his decision making process, regardless of the play called.
3. Yes, but again, not the point. We’re discussing McNabb not knowing the overtime rules and the effects it COULD have had on his execution of the plays. Imagine the Eagles were on the 35 with a minute to go in overtime and the difference in philosophy knowing that if he doesn’t score he’s stuck with a tie or if he thinks he’s got another quarter if he runs out of time. There is no sense of urgency because if the clock runs out, he just keeps on marching in the second overtime.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:12 PM
3. Didn’t the Bengals have the ball to end the game?
Yes, but again, not the point.
Yes this is the point. Game Over.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:15 PM
Tampa, when you have nothing to contribute other than a single line with no support, logic, or point, it’s easy to ignore. Thank you for that.
Of course, now the discussion is pointless because there is no player in the league not well aware of the rule (I hope).
November 17th, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Dude, I totally just got the image. It’s a tie. And it’s crossed out. Get it? No ties? Fucking brilliant imagery.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:31 PM
The Bengals didn’t even have the damn ball at the end of the game.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:31 PM
So you’re telling me there’s a POSSIBILITY in the last Eagels possession of the game, he MIGHT have done something differently had he known there would be no second OT? I appreciate your points, but I still think they’re highly speculative. We’re talking about split second decisions here. Correct me if I’m wrong but generally when an offensive play is called, the QB has three/four options, right? – Pass to WR1, Pass WR2, Pass to WR/TE3, running on his own. If the coach lets the QB know they’re in a clock management situation, then McNabb’s only options would be plays that will stop the clock.
November 17th, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Sorry you’re having a bad day, jpq.
sportsgal: having a good day, just didn’t wanna go back & forth. if the Bills lose tonight (good possibility) tomorrow might not be such a good day-lol
