George Karl, a Man With a Lifelong Allergy to Defense, Now Suddenly is In Love With It
NBA November 18th. 2008, 5:30pm
George Karl, a man known to shrug his shoulders at practice as his offensive-minded players expressed no desire to play defense (even though, according to certain stats, they weren’t that bad!), suddenly has seen the light. He is a changed man. All it took was getting rid of Allen Iverson!
“It’s nothing complicated: You’re going to play defense, you’re going to play hard, you’re going to try. I’d forgotten how much better you feel when you coach defense. You’re more comfortable. The game is easier to coach when defense is your dominant personality.”
“I’ve always liked to shoot early, but we got irresponsible with it and then it became the only way we could play well,” Karl said. “We didn’t have the other option. We were too deficient — too many deficient coaching philosophies, too many deficient defensive players, too deficient a defensive commitment. You can blame everything and everybody.”
Yes George, get giddy – you beat four crummy teams with losing records (Dallas, Memphis, Charlotte, Minnesota), won at Boston and lost to Cleveland in your first six games with Chauncey Billups. This year’s fall is going to be much more sweet than last year’s epic no-show against the Lakers. Can Billups keep Kenyon Martin’s temper in check? Nope. Can Billups get Carmelo Anthony’s mind right? Nope. Can Billups help JR Smith determine what is and isn’t a good shot? Nope. Can Billups help Nene lose weight? Nope.

I love the nuggets. Team w/ most tats in the league… easily.

Remember this one, Georgie? Dick.

George Karl grew up down the street from my parent’s house. So, yeah, I just won this thread.

Can Billups stop TBL from hating Cutler? Nope. Can Billups stop TBL from hating Brandon Marshall? Nope. Can Billups stop TBL from hating the Nuggets? Nope.

Wouldn’t it be Mr. & Mrs. Awesome who won this thread?

It was my house before I became a grownup.

5-1 against anyone is impressive, especially when one of the wins is against the defending champs.
Still not sure why they won’t be able to do all the things you say they won’t be able to with Billups, when they did those things last year with Iverson (who’s worse than Billups).

Iverson won more than a few games for Denver last year by going on runs in the 3rd or 4th quarter. A reason he may have taken the shots that Karl has suddenly discovered he didn’t like is because Karl didn’t run any kind of offense. Iverson >>>> Billups.

For the most part, I’d agree that Iverson is better than Billups. Billups is really only better at two things:
1. Playing offense.
2. Playing defense.

Yes, its a gigantic train going on in Denver right now over Billups and the Nuggets. Melo HAS changed his attitude, Martin is now the enforcer (a good one) Nene has played greater than 35 minutes a night for the past four games. This has been fun and from all indications it will continue to be that. Be that as it may…we have not forgotten that Karl is a jackass and has shown that he can cave at any moment.

Playing defense? In certain aspects
Playing offense? You’re dismissed

Chauncey Billups takes such a giant shit on Iverson in two key aspects of offense (making shots and not turning it over) that it’s laughable.
I will say this. Iverson is one of the best shot takers the game has ever seen. Too bad he doesn’t make many.

They’ve shot about the same percentage for their careers. When you’ve been your team’s primary ball handler and shot taker for the bulk of your career, that will effect both your shooting percentage and turnover rate. What’s Chauncey’s excuse for his shooting percentage?

Chauncey is a much better point guard, which is what the Nuggets needed. AI is a much better scorer, which is what the Pistons needed. This is a great trade for both teams….that is provided the Pistons get McDyess back.
Nick – I think the Cavs and their fans are not going to like this trade at the end of the 08-09 season. I think it is going to work out great for us Pistons fans (fingers crossed).

Give me an email address. If the Cavs face the Pistons in the playoffs (and Lebron is healthy), I’ll wager whatever you want.
