In 2006, OSU and Michigan had accomplished the most in the regular season and most pundits thought they were the two best teams in the country. They voted not by the regular season, but by who they wanted in a title game.

Not true at all. Florida had played the tougher schedule, had played and beaten more bowl bound teams, and won their conference. Michigan had a great season, but had their shot and their overall resume was lacking. The fact that the voters actually stepped back before the final poll and weighed the two teams on the basis of their seasons was immensely satisfying because it showed that they decided to put the team that most deserved the title shot first, instead of just leaving the polls as they were.

cursedcleveland, I still respectfully disagree. I realize that many voters still vote on that “best team” mentality, and it’s arrogant and elitist. There are some voters who would still put USC in the top ten, even if they were 8-4. That is a slap in the face to me. And, by the way, I thought the voters got it right when they picked Florida over Michigan, and I think the result showed it. Florida was the one-loss team from the best conference that year, and I don’t think Michigan deserved a second chance. Of course we’re both biased in opposite directions probably.

One thing we can all agree on: Jarrett Lee is still shit, but LSU’s pass defense is even worse.

Jay, wanted to catch up with you about your comment that teams should be ranked based on what they did. That also sounds good on paper, but it’s not always how voters react (and they’ve never been instructed to vote in the matter that you espoused – whether they should or not is another question).
