Scott Van Pelt on Baseball Writers:
1-liner, Baseball, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings November 24th. 2008, 1:15pmScott Van Pelt: Friday, around 1:42 pm, on the possible retirement of Greg Maddux and whether or not he’d be a Hall of Famer. “No blinking. Instant yes.” Tirico: “Will somebody not vote for him?” Van Pelt: “Somebody always does that. [It's because baseball writers are] miserable fat curmudgeons. You know the kind. The kind who think blogs are evil and don’t leave the press tent and are angry and bitter men.”

The guy who wrote at SVP Style now writes here.
And spot on, Van Pelt. He’s one of the guys who’s learned how to manage a relationship with the blogosphere.

Miserable fat curmudgeons are fun people to observe.
November 24th, 2008 at 1:47 PM
am i the only one who had to look up the definition of curmudgeons?
November 24th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
Yes.
November 24th, 2008 at 1:51 PM
AC…yes.
November 24th, 2008 at 1:52 PM
SVP is money. And he’s correct in his assessment.
Then again, outside of Little Leaguers and old curmudgeons, who’s obsessing over baseball? Let the curmudgeons have their day in the sun. They’ll be asleep by 12:35 anyways.
November 24th, 2008 at 1:52 PM
i guess i need a word of the day calendar or something.
November 24th, 2008 at 1:58 PM

SVP knows how to kiss arse.
November 24th, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Scott Van Pelt is the tits, and in this instance as usual, right on. And a Maryland grad. Fuck. Yes.
November 24th, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Maddux goes in unanimously, but for his career win total and his four Cy Young awards. Because what sportswriters thought was more important than him being straight filthy for a ten year period.

Bill Conlin is the textbook definition of the “miserable fat curmudgeon”. Anyone who makes his HOF/BBWAA picks by drawing names out of a hat should have his voting privileges revoked. Even other writers(Bernie Miklasz and Joe Posnanski, for example) take shots at their colleagues for the way they vote. Also, I think the fact that there are 785 members has a lot to do with it. That’s way too many asshats with agendas, many from small-town papers trying to make a name for themselves, to have a fair and impartial vote.

Love SVP on the radio. Pretty sure he dropped “epic fail” during the last half hour of Trico & Van Pelt this afternoon. Definitely made me laugh out loud driving to work. His solo hour (when it’s not hijacked by Michele Tafoya) is brilliant. Sucks that goes up against the second of hour of Mad Dog Unleashed on 123…
