Tyler Hansbrough’s First Test: Luke Harangody
College Basketball November 26th. 2008, 8:40pm
We had some fun with the reigning Naismith award winner this summer: First, a reader plucked this iconic photo of Hansbrough leaping off a frat roof into a swimming pool … and it quickly became a national story. On a much, much smaller scale, we also brought you these fun photos of Psycho T partying with a UNC cheerleader. And tonight, his exploits on the court become relevant for the first time since that Final Four game that Packer called with eight minutes left in the first half.
Hansbrough vs. Harangody. Two beefy white men with NBA futures grappling for supremacy in the paint in a bandbox gym in Maui. Big fun! Starts at 10. As we type this, Purdue is trying to pull away from pesky BC in the Garden. Around 9, Blake Griffin goes up against UAB.

i count one
November 26th, 2008 at 8:50 PM
also, look at how thin he is in this picture. as a duke fan i can say that duke needs to fucking fire their strength and conditioning coach. all the carolina players go from bean poles to jacked. while duke players (henderson and singler aside) go through college looking the same as they did in high school, its ridiculous. they cant afford a fucking gym there or are all the white guys afraid theyll get shanked going to lift in downtown durham?
November 26th, 2008 at 9:05 PM
Moleman’s a duke fan? Well then fuck that guy.
/sincere
November 26th, 2008 at 9:14 PM
As much as it pains me to say it, Purdue looks very good. They’ve got a lot of weapons and are well disciplined. Meanwhile I’ll revise my IU wins estimate down from 10 to 8 but they’re all heart and hustle.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:18 PM
Harangody is soft on defense. This game will be a blowout.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:42 PM
that hurts hef. bad.
shame youve suspended hockey posts until monday because when crosby and malkin go into the hall the video they show will be from tonights third period. down 3-1 therrien puts them on the same line. sid has a goal waived off; it was a goal but it was the right call you couldnt tell where the puck was. you can tell hes pissed. right afterwards, he headmans the puck, drops it to malkin, then just fucking teleports to the other side of the ice and smacks in the perfect pass from malkin.
the kind of goal he should get two points for.
soon after, malkin is running the controlled breakout, passes it to sid who gains the blueline, spins to draw over the defender in the middle, dishes to malkin who goes right past where his man should have been. walks in on net untouched and buries it.
next shift sid steals it from an islander on the goal mouth, falling down he throws it to malkin who, also, falling down, buries it.
malkin then gets the empty netter for the natural hattrick
third period: sid: 1G, 2A. malkin: 3G, 1A. fucking ridiculous. battlin billy smith i feel for you man your boys dominated the first two periods; but it was just an exhibition of the best two players in the game the last period
November 26th, 2008 at 10:09 PM
Rashard Lewis with a clutch three to beat the 76ers! nice shot.
UAB up about 10 because they’re older, smarter, and scrappier. Can’t even get the ball to Blake
November 26th, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Wayne Ellington is so overrated. he could drop 20 tonight and i’d still say that. i wouldn’t draft him
November 26th, 2008 at 10:12 PM
mcalnarey can’t shake ellington, maybe the guy has value after all?
well, he just hit a 3 to make me look silly
November 26th, 2008 at 10:14 PM
stick by your point baby! id take green over ellington any day.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:14 PM
mcalanaray is fun to watch. he’ll shoot it from anywhere, and he’s aggressive as heck
November 26th, 2008 at 10:15 PM
oh def Green over Ellington, no doubt
i’d take RObert Vaden of UAB over Ellington
November 26th, 2008 at 10:17 PM
UAB up 5 at the break
griffin with 13-9, on pace for another 20-20
November 26th, 2008 at 10:18 PM
damn lawson coast to coast for a layup faster than you can spell hansbrough
November 26th, 2008 at 10:19 PM
Lawson is insane man.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:19 PM
look at the speedy of lawson, he’s just dusting people
he’s such a better finisher than collison
November 26th, 2008 at 10:22 PM
this ND bench is a joke. where will the scoring come from?
November 26th, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Bobby! You have to love Frasor.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:23 PM
The fact that Ty Lawson can do anything he wants pretty much just Russel Robinson’s defensive skills all the more impressive.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:23 PM
Drew for Carolina looks good early this season. Such an improvement over Quentin Thomas already.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:24 PM
U fuckin kidding me Hansbrough?
November 26th, 2008 at 10:25 PM
And you can’t tell at all that I’ve been drinking based on my spelling and missing a word in my last comment.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Drinking sure beats replacing all of the kitchen cabinet handles and hinges. Fucking housework…
November 26th, 2008 at 10:27 PM
If Hansbrough can hit that shot all season he’ll average 25 a game.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:28 PM
Tyler’s shooting early reminds of what he did too Louisville last year. guy just isn’t missing.
now, he lost a contact.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:29 PM
ha! wife already put me on notice. “I know you like video games and football tomorrow, but you have to help.” i told her i want a list and i want it early. i hate be bothered with that shit.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:29 PM
@tbl, you sure can’t say he hasn’t improved his game leaps and bounds every year. The farther he moves out with that shot the better nba player he’ll be.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Lawson is dominating right now. This is vintage.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:34 PM
TBL, surely she doesn’t expect any productivity from you after noon. Seriously, she’s abusing the holiday code if she wants you to do anything after noon-noon thirty. Football is what Thanksgiving is all about.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Hansbrough with the BIG block!
November 26th, 2008 at 10:36 PM
hansbrough hits a jumper, than rejects and ayers shot
man, the kid is good
November 26th, 2008 at 10:37 PM
Freak Lawson!
November 26th, 2008 at 10:38 PM
how fast is lawson? the guy is a one man fast break
/Bilas’d
November 26th, 2008 at 10:38 PM
lawson must have 4-5 of those end to end jobs for layups.
UNC up 11. ND looks tired and has little room for error on missed shots with no bench.
OKL has tied it at 37 …
November 26th, 2008 at 10:42 PM
This Freshman Larry Drew is a good, good defender early on. He’s going to earn his minutes.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:43 PM
i know a lot of people say Hansbrough wont be a good pro, but i’d take him at the end of the first round, maybe in the 20s. he’ll be a fan favorite, he’ll hustle his ass off, and as a sub, he’ll provide energy.
obviously it depends who is still on the board, but i just dont see why you wouldn’t want a kid with that kind of desire
November 26th, 2008 at 10:43 PM
what’s the over/under on this game? and how deep would carolina be if totally healthy?
November 26th, 2008 at 10:44 PM
obviously it depends who is still on the board, but i just dont see why you wouldn’t want a kid with that kind of desire
Don’t forget will.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:44 PM
TBL, I agree. If Hansbrough is there from the 20s on, I’d take him in a heartbeat. A lottery pick he is not, however. Harangody is a lottery pick, because he’s got the ‘tude of Hansbrough, and the polish to score in many ways.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:48 PM
People can shit on Hansbrough all they want. But they’ll never be truthful if they say they don’t want him on their team. It’ll be the same way in the nba.
And the fucking 3 by Hansbrough!!!!!!!!!
November 26th, 2008 at 10:49 PM
TH shot 150 three’s A DAY in the offseason? Damn. UNC is FF bound, for sure. i still believe UConn with Thabeet will give him fits. we shall see.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:51 PM
I agree, TBL. UConn probably will. But I don’t see UConn having an answer for Denny Green, who might be sixth man on this time when Ginyard returns.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Thabeet is S O F T. As much as Mouthbreather annoys everyone, he’s tough as hell inside. He gets every tough rebound and every loose ball down low.
I think Notre Dame has been exposed some. They’re like a poor man’s Duke, right down to the white guys.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:00 PM
steve lavin is funny. that is all.
(UAB 55, OKL 54 with 820 left)
November 26th, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Also, Blake Griffin makes Michael Beasley look like Shawn Bradley.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:04 PM
it really depends on who comes out … can you really say that if there’s a team drafting at 13 that needs a PF and Harangody is off the table … you would pass on Hansbrough?
As for who guards Green? Stanley Robinson. Great athlete, but he’s out now for academics (i believe). Back for 2nd semester. he’s like 6-7, perfect guy for the job. he was the one who got dunked on by Joe Alexander in the garden
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DotSO6957qU
November 26th, 2008 at 11:06 PM
was soft. was also a kid with no experience or toughness. i bet he got it this summer.
this is hilarious, and somehwat accurate. luke > singler, mcalarney > scheyer, and jackson > nolan smith. so Duke is a poor man’s ND?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:07 PM
I hate Duke as much as the next guy, root against them when they play anyone but Carolina, but it shocks me how much people underrate Kyle Singler.
Mole- Holy shit that was a good game. And John Curry is in the show!
November 26th, 2008 at 11:08 PM
nice steal by the little guy and bucket by Vaden – UAB up 2 with 5 left
November 26th, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Fetch – I love Singler. real nice inside/outside player. i just dont think he’s on the level of harangody or hansbrough now. they’re both a year or two older, i believe.
he’s what shav randolph should have been (or was expected to be). randolph is an epic NBA bust, and is best known for a funny quote about gays in the locker room
http://thebiglead.com/?p=1769
November 26th, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Definitely
Harder to compare since they’re much different players and bring different things to the table
No CHANCE.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:11 PM
yeah, but then ellington, who mind you isn’t that great, but a good scorer, goes off.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:12 PM
I suppose comparing Singler to Harangody is tough too since Harangody is a post player and Singler is an effective inside/outside guy. Not that I’m saying Singler is better than Harangody, but if he comes out next year or even this year Id take him with a first rounder.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:13 PM
danny green’s only basket? really?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:14 PM
scary huh?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:15 PM
Seriously, Lawson is really in top form tonight.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:16 PM
As somebody who couldn’t possibly care less about the NBA, I’m having a hard time understanding the idea of always bringing up draft value in terms of ranking player quality. What’s wrong with being just a great college player?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:16 PM
ND is just fouling everytime now. they’re hurting. this one’s over.
Uh, Jackson has led the Big East in assists the last two years. you’re aware of this, right? Nolan Smith is a sophomore with little experience. lotta talent, but come on …
November 26th, 2008 at 11:17 PM
Nothing s1rweeze. Sometimes all people can think about is money.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:17 PM
UAB down 10 all of a sudden wth 215 left. will they cover?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:18 PM
griffin has 29-15. i dont think he’ll get a 4th straight 20-20. uab will need a flurry of 3’s here at the end to get the cover. glad i didnt wager on it.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:18 PM
im a HUGE curry fan. when conklin came up last year he took over for wilkes barre and just ran shit. they have david brown too, so they have the two hobie baker finalists that were goalies from two years ago. shame curry is actually older than fleury (thats weird right as hell) but i do not like sabourin at all and hope that curry can establish himself as a legit backup.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:19 PM
I think you’ll change your tune in a couple months.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:19 PM
nothing at all. many players have built a legacy on being a great college player. laettner was, IMO, one of the best college players in the last 20 years. bob hurley, too. in college both were incredible
November 26th, 2008 at 11:21 PM
sr1 – in a few months, smith might be better. but he’s started all of what, 5 games? hope he doesn’t look over his shoulder – and hope coach K doens’t give him reason to. he’s definitely the choice.
ND just looks gassed. not really trying on D.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:22 PM
our boy paulus is out injured so i dont think he has to worry for a little while. if anything it may give him a chance to play without pressure and really establish himself. though they have been playing williams at point a bit even though he is really a 2
November 26th, 2008 at 11:23 PM
UAB down 13 with 24 seconds, they DONT cover the 5.5.
vaden couldn’t make shit.
32-15 for big blake, and he gets to torment Purdue tomorrow.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Wow, the gamecenter says that Griffin is averaging 23.5 boards a game. Who will be the first to charge him with using supplements. That is no boy. He’s all man.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:24 PM
Mole- I totally forgot Curry was a Hobey finalist too. He should have been in the hat trick instead of Brown that year, but Notre Dame had like 5 all world defensemen and BU just never scored for Curry that year.
weeze- Definitely agree with you on the college/NBA thing. As for the Smith/Jackson thing I haven’t seen Jackson play that much, but as for Smith I think he has some improving to do. Lot’s of talent though.
Oh and as an aside, there’s some team who recruited a guy who only averaged 10 and 3 in high school. WTF?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:24 PM
the o/u for UNC game was about 169.
looks like the under to me
November 26th, 2008 at 11:25 PM
whos the guy?
wow, Tyler tried to dunk on Zeller
that would have been FILTHY
November 26th, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Fellas it’s safe to say after watching Hansbrough trying to dunk over the nd guy that he’s got a different mindset this year. Love it.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:26 PM
yeah, he was a fucking walk on too. undefeated in the bean pot. hes better than brown but either one ought to have a load of trade value in the near future.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:26 PM
I think Smith and the Duke system are made for each other and he will be a star. Just my feeling.
UAB kinda went all Mike Davis at the end there. If UNC holds onto this lead, I’m in the money!
November 26th, 2008 at 11:26 PM
you dont think we’ll see 60 points combined in 14 minutes TBL?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:27 PM
wonder how many state titles the Hansbrough bros won in HS? 2? 3?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:28 PM
two according to the wiki
November 26th, 2008 at 11:29 PM
I remember seeing one on tv against a st. louis powerhouse that was favored heavily and Hansbrough just absolutely dominated that game. It’s worth you looking up because I’m too lazy…
November 26th, 2008 at 11:29 PM
all i remember is his team losing to oden’s. LAWRENCE NORTH WHAT WHAT
November 26th, 2008 at 11:29 PM
TBL- I can’t remember, I think he’s a Frosh at Tennessee if I’m not mistaken. I just read it today too.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:31 PM
mole you’d know this better than I would but I was reading Lee Stempniak’s wiki after he got traded to the Leafs and it said he had already been named the captain?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Championship 05
http://champs.mshsaa.org/results/bracket_box.asp?Bracket_Info_ID=3576
November 26th, 2008 at 11:33 PM
Oh and as an aside, there’s some team who recruited a guy who only averaged 10 and 3 in high school. WTF?
That’s nothing. Didn’t Tim Floyd recruit Lil Romeo? Who was a walk on in HS?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:33 PM
walk on – dud
November 26th, 2008 at 11:34 PM
Looks like at least two. Here is the home page. They are class 5. Poplar Bluff
http://www.mshsaa.org/Activities/Info/Basketball.aspx
November 26th, 2008 at 11:35 PM
“If UNC holds this lead”
done deal, pal. this shit is over.
the only question is whether they’ll hit the over 169.
it’s at 119 … so 50 points int he final 11 mins … i guess that is do-able. i just assume reserves will take the court (and miss) when the Irish go down 20
November 26th, 2008 at 11:36 PM
i hadnt heard that but i dont think its true. they dont have a captain; theyre doing what the pens did two years ago when mario retired and going no captain without sundin this year. its my understanding antropov is in line for it though
November 26th, 2008 at 11:40 PM
as long as TH stay on the floor, that over could happen … he’s just not missing
all of a sudden its at 139 with 718 left. let’s see who comes out after this TV To
November 26th, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Usually Carolina doesn’t put in scrubs until under 2 minutes.
/serious
November 26th, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Jeez, what happened to Adam Morrison?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:47 PM
danny green has to be one of the 10 most fun players to watch
oh wow, and McAlarney answers with a 25-footer
yeah, the over is looking good
November 26th, 2008 at 11:48 PM
wow, another bomb
now only down 11
November 26th, 2008 at 11:48 PM
nothing. he was never as good as advertised. i will goto my grave arguing redick is a vastly superior basketball player.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Take Redick to the grave with you would you?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:49 PM
i like to be peed on after sex, what can i say
November 26th, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Sorry, mole, I would have said that about any duke player. I’m not partial.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:51 PM
Denny Green. Wow.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:52 PM
Thomson with another huge game. 16 and 13
November 26th, 2008 at 11:52 PM
The Irishman (well, kinda) can shoot the rock
November 26th, 2008 at 11:52 PM
i took no offense to that i assure you
frankly, after moving out of the carolinas after living there for twelve years its like i can follow basketball in peace. noone gives a fuck about basketball in central pennsylvania, theyre too busy caring about an overrated football program. but now i dont have to deal with duke/carolina debates every fucking day.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:53 PM
and there’s your over.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:57 PM
omg mcalarney is unconscious
geez that’s incrdible
November 26th, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Man, Mcalarney has just went off!
November 26th, 2008 at 11:58 PM
100 points again. This is scary.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:59 PM
“If there’s a logo he’s gonna shoot from it”
“Maybe he’ll shoot it from your sleeve”
Sean McDonough wins.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:59 PM
jesus lord.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:59 PM
nice cover
November 27th, 2008 at 12:00 AM
we all know roy is the best november/december coach in the land, big fucking deal
November 27th, 2008 at 12:00 AM
This is one of the best shooting performances that I have ever seen.
November 27th, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Mcalarney! Holy Shit!
November 27th, 2008 at 12:01 AM
i’d love to look at tape of how the heck Kansas drilled these guys – i know it got close, but that first 15 mins was a rout. how? defense? just scoring more?
mcalarney is really unbelievable. 10 3’s and 39 points
incredible performance
November 27th, 2008 at 12:01 AM
@mole, one time he was the best in March too.
November 27th, 2008 at 12:02 AM
the month it was played in combined with who was coaching carolina
November 27th, 2008 at 12:02 AM
TBL they were just so much more physical and agressive at all aspects. That game is burned into my mind.
November 27th, 2008 at 12:02 AM
with doherty’s players. that title was on jawad williams more than anyone.
November 27th, 2008 at 12:05 AM
i mean shit bill callahan took a team to the superbowl
