Since the Titans-Lions Game Will Be a Bust …
NFL November 27th. 2008, 12:30pm
… ponder the NFL MVP race. One thing seems certain: It’s going to be a QB or RB. It’s been one or the other since 1988. Worthless trivia: Jerry Rice in 1987 was the last non-QB or RB to win the award. And for anyone campaigning for Joey Porter of the Dolphins, the last defensive player to capture the honor was the original LT in 1986. A few of the popular candidates for this year’s award, and then two why-the-heck-not names:
Obvious
Kurt Warner – Has Cards one win away from first NFC West title, which would be the first time they’ve won anything since the ‘Nam. 2nd in QB rating, 2nd in passing yards, 3rd in TDs.
Drew Brees – Stat monster for 6-5 Saints: 4th in QB rating, 2nd in completions, 1st in passing yards, 2nd in TDs. Seems like a Colt Brennan or Graham Harrell – system guy who boasts big numbers.
Brett Favre - Ageless wonder has Jets tied for the 2nd best record in the AFC, and they just knocked off the unbeaten Titans. 1st in completion percentage, 4th in TDs.
Clinton Portis - NFL rushing leader is the primary reason the Redskins are one of the biggest surprise teams in the league and in the playoff mix with a rookie head coach in the most difficult division in football.
Peyton Manning – Grandfathered in just because. Hindered by a poor defense, he’s orchestrated late wins over the Vikings, Texans, Steelers and Chargers, all on the road.
No Shot, But Still Valuable as Hell
Matt Ryan, Falcons – If you took the projections of 50 pundits in the preseason as to what Atlanta’s record would be, we’re going to guess the average would be four victories. Ryan’s got them to seven. RB Michael Turner has been incredible, but Ryan’s rookie season has been nothing short of astonishing.
Jerod Mayo, New England - Only a rookie, but considering the Pats’ defensive losses this season (Samuel to the Eagles; Rodney Harrison and Adailus Thomas to injury), it’s rather surprising that they’re still the 8th best scoring defense in football. A lot of it can be attributed to Mayo, who is 4th in the league in solo tackles with 70.

mayo? fuck that. james harrison is defensive player of the year at this point.

brees isn’t putting up numbers because he’s a system quarterback…he’s putting up numbers because he’s the most accurate quarterback in the nfl

My dad just suggested they give points to the Lions for completed passes and first downs. Would it matter?
November 27th, 2008 at 1:41 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Detroit players decided not to come out for the second half. They aren’t even trying to hide that they’re mailing this game in.

I’m gonna have to agree with your dad. Jesus, this is awful. I need to get drunk again, or drunker. I don’t think I’ve sobered up from last night yet.

Unfortunately I didn’t drink last night and my parents aren’t drinkers. I am waiting on other family members to bring over some beer. The booze can’t get here soon enough…

My 87 year old grandpa, who really can’t see, just commented on how bad the Lions are.
November 27th, 2008 at 1:58 PM
What analysis are they going to give at the half?
November 27th, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Man, I wish that I was able to watch this game.
November 27th, 2008 at 2:02 PM
No you don’t. Goodell probably had this game blacked out in London so people will actually buy tickets to next year’s game

Thank I’m going to have to agree with Jon on this one, TBL. To cast Drew Brees as a “system guy” and compare him to Colt Brennan is insulting. Look, I know you want FavreFavreFavre to walk away with his fourth MVP award (OMG! That’s his jersey number!!), but the fact is Drew Brees has been throwing to guys like Lance Moore, Billy Miller, Devery “stone hands” Henderson, the injured Marques Colston and the douche-tastic Jeremy Shockey.
Kurt Warner’s got Larry Fitzgerald AND Anquan Boldin…AND he’s playing the NFC West. Drew Brees is playing in the NFC South, currently the best division in football. And if you think I’m wrong, and that the AFC East is better, consider this: their eight non-divisional games are coming against the AFC West AND the NFC West this year.

But I love seeing people get blown out and embarrassed almost as much as I love a tight game.
November 27th, 2008 at 2:16 PM
Is there no one on the Giants who is valuable? Out of the choices provided I would choose Warner over Brees.
November 27th, 2008 at 2:26 PM
Goodell needs to invoke the mercy rule and start the Dallas/Seattle game early.
November 27th, 2008 at 2:31 PM
You put Jerod Mayo, but no Brandon jacobs, Eli Manning, or Justin Tuck
remember everyone writing off that defense after Umenyiora went down? Oh you don’t..
http://thebiglead.com/?p=7084
and that was before the Umenyiora injury.
November 27th, 2008 at 2:33 PM
For the Giants…a trio of real good backs, a mediocre QB, and an enigmatic WR. Nobody really stands out. I’d go 1. Portis 2. Favre 3. Brees
November 27th, 2008 at 3:05 PM
@Billy, you’re right, I can’t stop watching. I want Tennessee to score 60
November 27th, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Umm – can someone clear up that MVP link for me? Which vote is generally recognized? It looks like now it’s just the APs, but in years past did we recognize all those other entities? i dont remember TD sharing his MVP with cunningham. In that case – wasnt it Elway the lone MVP winner in 87?
November 27th, 2008 at 3:35 PM
It’s gotten so bad that I noticed that they put Vince Young in the game. I bet that 54 yard gain was actually just a screen pass or something.
November 27th, 2008 at 7:35 PM
Brees = Brennan?
Jesus Christ.
November 27th, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Mayo? Ha, why not just put up Shaun Rogers while we are at it…

Gotta be Cassel. I mean, Brady’s overrated and Cassel’s 3 years younger. Trade Brady now!
