Oddity or Something Else? Head-to-Head, the ACC Beat the SEC 6-4 This Season
College Football December 1st. 2008, 2:30pm
We all know the Pac-10’s a joke. And everyone thinks the ACC is a joke. But in four head-to-head games this weekend, the ACC surprised the mighty SEC, 3-1 (hat tip, CGB). Georgia Tech beat Georgia, Wake Forest beat Vandy, and Clemson beat South Carolina. We compiled the season-long stats, and if our math is correct, the ACC won six of the 10 games head-to-head with the SEC this season.
South Carolina 34, NC State 0 (SEC 1-0)
Alabama 34, Clemson 10 (SEC 2-0)
Wake Forest 30, Ole Miss 28 (SEC 2-1)
Georgia Tech 38, Miss. State 7 (TIED 2-2)
Florida 26, Miami 3 (SEC 3-2)
Florida 45, Florida State 15 (SEC 4-2)
Duke 10, Vanderbilt 7 (SEC 4-3)
Georgia Tech 45, Georgia 42 (TIED 4-4)
Wake Forest 23, Vanderbilt 10 (ACC 5-4)
Clemson 31, South Carolina 14 (ACC 6-4)
And it’s not like the ACC just beat up on bottom feeders – of the Ole Miss, Vandy, Georgia and South Carolina will all be participating in bowl games.

The ACC doesnt have a great team or even a really good team but it does have a few good teams and a lot average teams.
The Orange Bowl is going to suck regardless
VT/BC winner VS. The Natty

Conference vs conference bashing is uninteresting to me. What is interesting is that pose that cheerleader is holding in that picture.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:45 PM
@KC – you aren’t concerned about the buttcrack running down her torso?
December 1st, 2008 at 2:45 PM
Forgot the link to back up my argument.

Shut up KC Resident! Things need to be compared to other things of a similar nature!

@KC – you aren’t concerned about the buttcrack running down her torso?
Yea. WTF is that. Its pretty gross.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:47 PM
i cant wait for Florida to lose this weekend
December 1st, 2008 at 2:49 PM
@irish – do you really think Bammer will win…not could, but will?
December 1st, 2008 at 2:49 PM
@tampa – it’s the redheaded step sister of the fupa.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:50 PM
@miz- w/o a doubt
December 1st, 2008 at 2:51 PM
irish, not gonna happen. but i am looking forward to Utah beating Bama in the Sugar Bowl.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:51 PM
Irish, Florida is gonna win. Don’t talk that nonsense.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:52 PM
two things will happen for Bammer in their next two games: they will lose to Florida and they will win their bowl game.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:53 PM
i cant stand saban but am dying for bama to win. my detest of florida and espn’s lovefest of them is enough to make me want to see saban succeed
December 1st, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Quiz and Quon = beaver believer?
December 1st, 2008 at 2:56 PM
that must be a lot detest, moleman.
December 1st, 2008 at 2:58 PM
thats right i hate them so much it makes me use verbs as nouns
December 1st, 2008 at 2:59 PM
yes sir
December 1st, 2008 at 3:00 PM
that’s not the only bad (projected) bcs game.
how about bama vs. utah? yuk.
how about texas vs. ohio state? yawn.
texas vs. bama in the sugar bowl would be awesome.
ohio state vs. utah in the fiesta would be cool.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Fatman Scoop has been on WFAN talking about the Plax situation for like a half hour. This is great.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:04 PM
Bama’s best wins on the year: LSU (in OT), Ole Miss (by 4), and the beatdown on Georgia. Ole Miss is ranked at 22 and Georgia is at 19. Georgia shouldn’t even be ranked. They have beaten NOBODY this year. That is not disputable.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:05 PM
Bama is a tough match-up for Utah. Utah will have trouble running their offense against Bama’s D-line.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:05 PM
The Orange Bowl won’t have two marquee (and by that I mean 10-11 win teams) in it. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a great game. I think the match up of either VT / BC v Cincy is appealing, because they are evenly matched. Just think back to Boise St versus Oklahoma. Not much on paper, but it is a top 5 BCS game. I might even have it as high as number three behind tOSU v Miami and USC v Texas.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:06 PM
@Quizz and Quon – Totally agree. Georgia has now lost their 3 biggest games of the year. I left them off my BlogPoll ballet.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:09 PM
The SEC this year is what the Big 10 usually is: two good teams and everyone else is borderline garbage.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:09 PM
what are you guys going to say next week when Alabama wins?
December 1st, 2008 at 3:11 PM
saw that cgb, nice work.
@slc – i would consider putting money on a pick’em utah/bama matchup. agree that bama is stacked on the line but just goine off resumes, i would take utah’s.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:11 PM
I will say, “That result doesn’t surprise me and damn that Irish is smart, he knew it was going to happen.”
December 1st, 2008 at 3:13 PM
what are you going to say when UF wins, irish?
December 1st, 2008 at 3:13 PM
The SEC is down for sure. UGA laid one giant egg as did LSU, TENN and AUB. One thing the talking heads got right was that the SEC has few QB’s worth a damn and it showed.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:14 PM
@kfc- that i was wrong
December 1st, 2008 at 3:15 PM
Florida isn’t losing.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:16 PM
I’de say Ole Miss is a little better than the credit they are currently getting. But this is a pretty spot on analogy.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:19 PM
you are wise, irish. Floriduh is about as overrated as it gets. Fuck Tebow and his 2 yard TD runs and his gross ducks that he throws all over the field.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:20 PM
i see your point but neither bc nor vtech are remotely close to the level of what oklahoma was the year they got beat by boise.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:25 PM
Florida has looked damn good lately so I might temper the Florida bashing until after the Bama game. While bama has looked good their resume is not as impressive as FLA’s and I think when the Vegas lines prove that as they have the Gators at a 9.5 point favorite. If the Gators win they will take out OU in my opinion. If OK ST can do to OU what it did imagine what Tebow and Harvin will do to them.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:27 PM
@GotG – truer words were never spoken
clown, you’re a gross duck
December 1st, 2008 at 3:29 PM
Nah, they lost at home to Texas reject Jevan Sneed, who couldn’t hang with Wake Forest. I’ll continue.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:31 PM
I’m with irish on this, Tebow can’t do much on the sideline watching while bama pounds the ball on the ground. Gods, how is their resume better, they are identical, beat mostly the same SEC teams, beat average ACC teams, but Bama hasn’t lost.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:31 PM
clown, i agree that was a bad loss but come on, bama needed OT to beat LSU.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:32 PM
I would have been on Florida but Harvin’s ankle injury makes it a toss up
December 1st, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Agreed. My point was more along the lines of good / bad game on paper doesn’t always translate to good / bad game on the field. If VT gets there everyone will be drooling over Cincy when they beat us.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Clown…every team has a down game. Bama played like ass against a very average LSU team and escaped…Flordia did likewise against a much better Ole Miss team and lost. I never thought I’d ever defend FLA but I think they are the best team in the country right now and will beat both Bama and OU. However, Bama can control the line so I would certainly take the points but I’d expect JPW to make a mistake or two that Tebow won’t.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:36 PM
but I think they are the best team in the country right now and will beat both Bama and OU
cmon Parrish, you are smarter than that
December 1st, 2008 at 3:39 PM
late to the party…i like ‘bama.
terrence cody > tebow
December 1st, 2008 at 3:39 PM
Listen, the thought of Urban Meyer winning another title and wearing another atrocious leather jacket while holding the crystal ball pisses me off. Aside from Saban and Weis there isn’t a bigger douchebag. But his team is loaded with speed, has the best special teams in football and has one hell of a QB. I think Bama will be a tougher game than OU because Bama has a solid defense while OU has nothing of the sort.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:42 PM
i dunno, that sounds pretty awesome to me.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:43 PM
I would rather have Texas-USC but I’ll take that over Utah vs anyone.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:47 PM
texas USC would only be good if VY came back…colt mccoy is no VY. that’d be an ugly, ugly game.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:48 PM
Yeah…it could be. USC’s defense is amazing. How that team lost a game is beyond me.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:48 PM
Just like we thought at the beginning of the year, USC is the best team in the country.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:50 PM
they were too big to see lil’ jacquizz hiding behind his OL.
/in all honesty, i have no idea
//im just grateful that when they come to columbus next year they won’t have cushing, rey rey, everson griffen, taylor mays, ellison, etc. etc. etc.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:51 PM
KFC SUCKS
December 1st, 2008 at 3:52 PM
A lack of focus and this man.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:52 PM
Just like we thought at the beginning of the year, USC is the best team in the country
we = ?
December 1st, 2008 at 3:53 PM
Isn’t Everson a true soph? Has it really been 3 years since he signed? You guys certainly get lucky on that end though with USC losing all of that talent. Taylor Mays is an absolute beast. I heard he ran a 4.29 electronic 40 last year…if true that is simply insane.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:55 PM
It will be interesting to see how the Big 12 South’s No Defense defenses match up against other teams.
The SEC was down this year, period. There were a lot of average teams on the field on Saturdays below the Mason Dixon line. The ACC? A lot of less than average teams played on Saturdays down the coast.
I’m tired of the league comparisons. They really don’t mean much for how good a team is.
This year would be THE year for an 8 team playoff. Based on matchup, there would be NO heads-up favorite. Florida looks really strong right now. ‘Bama is great D and ball control O (2002 Ohio State, anyone?). Texas and Okie can score on anyone. USC won’t let anyone score. Those are the 5 best teams in the country. There is no rational person that could only choose 2 of them to play for a national championship…
December 1st, 2008 at 3:55 PM
smart college football fans
December 1st, 2008 at 3:55 PM
this is true…both of their safeties scare me poopless.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:55 PM
Then the Big-10 is an even bigger joke. USC smoked Ohio St. and Cal handled Mich. St. so two of the conference’s top 3 teams lost to Pac-10 opponents and Penn St. is going to get blown out in the Rose Bowl. I still don’t get how Ohio St. loses its two biggest games of the year and is projected to go to the BCS.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:56 PM
are you sure it wasn’t this man?
/yes, my mancrush for sergio garcia leads me to believe that he, and he alone, is responsible for USC losing to oregon state.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:58 PM
because we bring people to the stadium.
oh, and waxed pretty much every other big 10 team we played and didn’t lose our season series to the b10’s version of the MWC, the MAC.
December 1st, 2008 at 3:58 PM
No spence, Quizz Rodgers has actually won something in his life.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:00 PM
USC squeaked by Cal. Fraud City.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:00 PM
ouch.
that was funny tho. i laughed.
/sergio is winning 2 majors this year
December 1st, 2008 at 4:02 PM
And struggled with Arizona, but did you see they had 3 shutouts!!!
/just dont ask against who
December 1st, 2008 at 4:03 PM
Tiger will amputate his leg above the knee and hit a bases loaded home run in ‘09.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:04 PM
What a load of BS. You guys sure waxed the hell out of Ohio and Troy at home.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:04 PM
Cal and Arizona are both better than Ole Miss or LSU.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:06 PM
Big 10 (1) beat Pac 10 (3)
Pac 10 (1) beat Big 10 (2)
Pac 10 (4) beat Big 10 (3)
I don’t think there is anything conclusive there.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:11 PM
And they held tOSU to 3 points and Cal to 3 points and Oregon to 10 points and Arizona to 10 points… Yeah, that defense is horrid.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:14 PM
But nice of you to completely ignore PSU’s asskicking of the 2nd best team in the PAC 10, but that would have hampered your argument, and would let me to believe that you DON’T have an agenday. Carry on.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:15 PM
And I don’t know what an “agenday” is, but you probably have it.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:16 PM
yea, good thing i didn’t say WAXED, i said “didn’t lose to.”
now, OSU did wax B10 opponents, just like i said, so id say my BS is pretty accurate.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:17 PM
Slow down cursed.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:17 PM
False. Arizona lost to New Mexico (damn Mountain West) and Cal lost to Maryland. Both are full of teh suck.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:17 PM
I don’t think anyone said “horrid”, very good, but overrated due to the competition.
I hate OSU, but if QQ/Ted can’t tell the difference between the Beckman led OSU of Sept and Pryor’s OSU of Oct/Nov, well I’m not sure what to say.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:27 PM
And I know it always comes off like we OSU people are homers in these dicussions.. We aren’t real thrilled with our team of late, trust me. Most OSU fans I talk to are demanding an offensive coordinator. But the overarching hatred for our team b/c we ended up in a title game a year ahead of schedule (although as it turns out, we were never on schedule) b/c other teams lost makes no sense.
Thank goodness we have the number one recruiting class going into next year (sorry, I get one ass-hat sentence a post).
December 1st, 2008 at 4:28 PM
coop, you couldn’t be talking about that dynamite buckeye pryor-led offense that went for 16 against Purdue, 20 against wisc, and 6 against penn state? how do you know ohio state wouldn’t be in the exact same position they are now if boeckman had started all year?
and clown, ole miss got beat by wake forest (who, in turn, was DOMINATED by Maryland) and vandy (who was beat by DUKE!). two bad losses. lsu lost to arkansas.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:29 PM
get a defensive coordinator while you’re at it.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:31 PM
no, he’s talking about the ones that only had to throw 10x per game against MSU, illinois, michigan, and northwestern because they held the ball for 40 minutes and had 300 yards rushing.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:32 PM
That’s quite a lineup.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:33 PM
or the one that went for 45 against MSU 45 @ NW 30 @ILL or 42 vs tSUN…
December 1st, 2008 at 4:33 PM
I would say OSU waxed Michigan St. and Northwestern and put up less than impressive performances against conference record 3-5 Wisconsin, 2-6 Purdue and 3-5 Minnesota. My point is that I don’t think Ohio St. deserves to be ranked as high as they are.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:36 PM
Quizz…i know you hate the b10 but i just can’t see how you can rationalize the pac-10 being a halfway decent conference, even on the b10’s level. it just isn’t. USC has all the talent in the entire conference, as evidenced by their horrid record against the MWC.
i don’t want to get into this all over again, but i just don’t see it.
and ive been saying all along that the three top big xii teams shouldn’t be in the top 10 because none of them could stop a JV high school team from scoring. you know what both of our opinions mean? jack shit.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:36 PM
Well, you know what they say, if you can score on Illinois, you can score on anybody.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:41 PM
spence, don’t hate the big 10, just feel the need to defend the consistently shat-upon Pac-10. I honestly think the two conferences are about equal, with both dropping off significantly after the top 5. I guess i would give the big 10 the tie breaker since their shitty teams (IU, UM) are better than the pac-10’s shitty teams (UW & WSU).
December 1st, 2008 at 4:42 PM
Fine. But let’s not pretend that the Big-10 goes more than two teams deep. Ohio St. should/does have all the talent and Penn St. fields a decent squad which will be exposed in the Rose Bowl. Michigan and Wisconsin are dead for now.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:42 PM
Ok that’s a good line quizz, you bastard. But, Penn State has the 4th best defense in all of college football, so I don’t think it’s a sin that a true frosh qb had troubles (actually threw the ball pretty well for the most the game).
People are just ripping on Northwestern because of their name, you guys obviously hadn’t seen them all year. The would have done just fine in the middle of the SEC, as would Michigan State. Wisky blows, Michigan blows, Illinois was all over the place, much like LSU. Iowa was under the radar and statistically has one of the top defenses in all of college football this year ( I dont’ know how..).
Minnesota is on the right path, it just seems that none of you probably watched Minny or MSU or Northwestern.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:45 PM
spence is right!
December 1st, 2008 at 4:46 PM
I’m in the media. Mine matters!
December 1st, 2008 at 4:46 PM
tx has a decent defense. ou’s would be ok if they could ever get healthy. i wanted tx to play usc in the fiesta but i would also enjoy watching ohio state.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:47 PM
Ivy League > Pac 10 and Big 10
December 1st, 2008 at 4:47 PM
But it doesn’t count because the Big 11 can’t play offense, much like the Big 12 lacks in defense.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:49 PM
But great news guys, at least Boise State has toughened up their schedule next season, nore more SOS debates! They’ve added UC DAVIS!!!
December 1st, 2008 at 4:49 PM
Agreed.
Admittedly never saw Northwestern or Minnesota. Saw parts of MSU/Cal. However, the truth is the Big 10 has a large drop off after the top 5. HUGE drop off.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:52 PM
I f-ing hate Boise State. I have mentioned it before but I think I was one of three non-OU fans rooting for the Sooners (or rather against Boise State) in the Fiesta Bowl a couple years ago.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:54 PM
Anyone that wants to rip a school for its schedule should look no further than Boise State.
December 1st, 2008 at 4:57 PM
look at those MAC teams…who do they think they are, the big 10?
December 1st, 2008 at 5:24 PM
this sure turned heated at around the 55 post mark. All I know is that my UGA bulldogs have no defense and will continue to have no defense until they go out and hire a worthy DC. Mark Richt sure does suffer from
the loyalty disease. God I hate you Willie Martinez.
December 1st, 2008 at 5:59 PM
Using stats to bolster arguments in college football is so misleading. Penn State has the 4th-best defense in college football. OK. Tennessee has the 6th best defense. So what does the stat truly mean?
December 1st, 2008 at 6:03 PM
that stat means their offenses suck.
December 1st, 2008 at 6:03 PM
Sucks about UGA losing to GT, that triple option is a bitch (ask Miami). You go from playing against the spread all year to suddenly preparing for the wishbone. Dont worry, MichSt wont put up much of a fight.
December 1st, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Pistol Pete, I use them as a supplement, like TBL uses Muscle Milk.
December 1st, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Dabo Sweeney named the coach of Clemson. One of the “good guys” in college football. I wish him all the best.
I’m hoping that all of TBL’s Urban to ND talk throws florida off their game. I always knew deep down he was a Saban shill.
December 1st, 2008 at 6:36 PM
Bill Stewart’s another one of the “good guys” – how’s that turning out!
December 1st, 2008 at 6:36 PM
I’m an SEC “homer” but … the SEC blows this year. Bama’s win over uga is meaningless and they will go 0-2 for the remainder of the season. Consider that either ole miss or uga is the third best team in the sec. Ugh – that’s bad.
… awesome. Thanks for making my night.
