Alabama-Florida: Two Days and No Trash Talk?
College Football December 2nd. 2008, 4:15pm
The good news is, Percy Harvin’s ankle is improving, and he might play. What’s better, Harvin at 75% or no Harvin? The Alabama defense will be the most physical one the Gators have faced since .. shhhheeeet, all season?
Kirk Herbstreit’s beloved Gators, they off the speed and finesse, are staggering 9.5 point favorites against unbeaten No. 1 Alabama. Not surprisingly, all the UF slurp jobs in the media have quietly angered the Tide. They won’t even talk about the Gators. It’s a trend with the Tide – who cares about the other guys and how good they are? “Have you seen my highlights?”
It’s easy to root for speed and offense … tougher to get excited about a defense that doesn’t get nearly the hype of USC’s, yet has played a much tougher schedule. (In the Gators’ defense, their defense has been surprisingly strong, as well.)
We’re not huge on comparing wins and losses, but but if you care to do so, there’s a good tally here. Couple things to keep in mind – UF got LSU and Miami at home; ‘Bama had to go on the road and played Clemson at a neutral site. UF beat Georgia at a neutral site, Alabama on the road.
Anyone remember when Alabama played in the 1992 National title game against Miami? The Tide’s defense dominated that game against the media-hyped Hurricanes, and we’ll never forget braggart Lamar Thomas getting caught from behind and stripped by George Teague (2:55 in the above video). This Alabama team, like that one, has no Heisman candidate and doesn’t partake in offensive orgies.
We said weeks ago that we’d go with Alabama in this game. And we’re sticking with that pick. Amazingly, someone at ESPN (it should be a noted, he’s writing a book about Georgia football) feels the same way. The only problem we forsee for ‘Bama is a deficit early. They’re at their best chewing clock and letting the defense generate turnovers. Down 10-14 points in the first half could spell doom. Just don’t have that much faith in John Parker Wilson.
Then again, what do we know? We thought the Tide, following an arrest-happy offseason, would be garbage this season.

Alabama is 3rd in scoring defense, Florida is 5th. Alabama is 3rd in yds allowed, Florida is 7th.

I have no problem rooting for good defenses. To me, a 14-10 game is much more exciting that a 42-38 game.

FLA -9.5 seems waaaay too high.
Therefore, FLA -9.5 is the pick.
December 2nd, 2008 at 4:27 PM
But what are the Heisman implications?
December 2nd, 2008 at 4:28 PM
gotta like bama here.

sure do. Gene Stallings was the coach of Alabama. Miami was cocky and got their ass kicked
and we’ll never forget braggart Lamar Thomas getting caught from behind and stripped by George Teague

Tebow looks fresh off the set of “Carrie” in that pic.

Do you think the Tide is a ten point dog right now because their coach is the decendent of Belezebub and Florida’s QB is a good Christian boy?

i could be wrong but i think when Arkansas played florida in the seccg back in 06 harvin was a little bruised up that game and he lit it up. Arkansas should have won that game too. Fucking Reggie Fish.

December 2nd, 2008 at 4:50 PM

December 2nd, 2008 at 4:52 PM
tell me about it tampa. to make matters worse that year, i went to the lsu game in little rock with all the returns (loss), went to the seccg in atlanta (loss) and watched that game get pissed away, then went to the capital one bowl in orlando (loss). it was an expensive and depressing month.

I know lots of people hate him but Sagarin has UF’s SOS at 28 and Bama’s at 73. The fact that Bama didn’t have to play Citadel I think confirms this.

Ark- Thats 3 losses in a Row holy shit balls. That was the Year Mitch Mustain was there. Nutt fucked up I would have kept him as the starter the only game they lost was the USC game with him as the starter. He wasnt a Matt Leinart but he was a game manager.
December 2nd, 2008 at 5:06 PM
tampa, he actually wasn’t even the starter for the SC game, he came in at the end of the game and led the O down field for a td. Mustain was 8-0 as a starter that year. Pretty sure casey dick started that SC game.

I love Florida, but with a questionable Harvin, a -9.5 spread is just stupid stupid high. Saban’s team will be ready to go, absolutely no doubt. I love Bama at +9.5. Love.
December 2nd, 2008 at 5:45 PM
Alabama has been able to run the football on everyone this year and I don’t see how they can consistently do it against Florida. Florida also can neutralize Alabama’s huge D-line with Cody by running to the outside with speed. I don’t trust John Parker Wilson at all in this spot.
December 2nd, 2008 at 5:49 PM
tbl, you surprise me with your wrongness from time to time. this is one of them.
December 2nd, 2008 at 6:03 PM
Ark Im talking about the real USC University of SOuthern California.
December 2nd, 2008 at 6:20 PM
To answer the question from the headline: there’s no way Saban isn’t watching his players as they sleep this week, and Meyer’s been gagging his boys since Brandon Spikes mouthed off about Tennessee. There’s plenty of motivation on either side (Bama, proving itself the rightful #1 again and the freight of the fanbase and history; UF, whatever got into Tebow after Ole Miss, a chance to prove it’s not Harvin that stirs the drink, and two in three years) and no trash talk is necessary.
Also, remember that UF and Bama are occasional opponents; they’re not the designated rivals from the SEC East and West, so they rotate two years on and off, I believe; the last time they played, UF rolled in 2006.
Oh, and Bama gave Meyer his first loss at UF.
December 2nd, 2008 at 7:12 PM
Robert Johnson started that game.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:27 PM
Having to double Cody on every play, blocking scheme wise, is the equivalent of having 8 in the box, while only using 7 players. Saban’s forte is the D secondary. This will be a true test of Tebow’s ability to read defenses, which Saban is a master of disguising, and completing passes.
I know it’s a cliche, but turnovers will be the key to this game.
