Awesome Athletic Candor, Courtesy of NFL Stars Clinton Portis and Joey Porter
Guns, NFL, Video December 10th. 2008, 4:45pm
Some season for newbie Redskins coach Jim Zorn coach, huh? Opened with that stinker of a loss to the Giants, then peeled off four wins in a row against teams that are currently in the playoff mix (including Dallas and Philly on the road). Then, there was the predictable letdown at home against the hapless Rams, a game that, in hindsight, was the start of the offensive malaise that plagues them to this day. They’ve gone 3-5 since beating Philly, and yesterday’s Clinton Portis explosion probably drilled the final nail into the coffin:
“We got a genius for a head coach, I don’t know, I’m sure he on top of things. He’s got everything figured out. Hey, that’s up to him. All I can do is when he calls a play is go out and try to execute to the best of my ability. I don’t know where it went wrong, all I know is it’s going wrong. So, you know, maybe I’m the problem. Maybe I’m the problem since I don’t practice, since I’m the only person that don’t practice and come out and play and try to give it what I’ve got, maybe I’m the problem. So I might need to be on IR.”
Tough to top that … but Joey Porter of Miami did. When asked about guns and protecting yourself, Porter locked up the Defensive Player of the Year award with this memorable interview:
Loved some of his quotes around the 1:30 mark. Love “nah” at the 3:05 mark when asked about whether or not he has a bodyguard. And then, around 3:25, it really gets awesome. First, he thinks twice about answering whether or not he owns a handgun. “Am I not supposed to protect my home? Am I supposed to have a house and let everyone come in and murder my family? Am I supposed to have no protection? I hope you have one.” Awesome.
Have we ever seen this sort of realness from Tom Brady or Eli Manning? Thank you, Joey Porter.

I think I missed the memo where Joey Porter became the official spokesperson on anything any NFL player does.
It must have been the one where Al Sharpton was declared the official spokesman for black people.

So who’s Jesse to Joey’s Al?
December 10th, 2008 at 4:51 PM
Clinton Portis is a piece of shit. He can’t help it, he went to college at the U.

stay classy beaver

hand guns are rather useless for the average person…if you want to protect your house, shotguns are the way to go…can’t miss if you’re at least functionally retarded, and they’re more intimidating to boot.

So who’s Jesse to Joey’s Al
Name a Cowboy. Any Cowboy.
December 10th, 2008 at 4:56 PM
Keep it real Joey P. Zorn tried to scapegoat Portis. I guess Southeast Jeromie wasn’t playing that.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:00 PM
Portis bitches anytime he isn’t catered to. Coach made a decision to put a me-first guy in his place. I like it.

irish, come on, Miami has produced a ton of arrogant, self-obsessed football players and Portis is one of them. Zorn did not try to scapegoat Portis. He pointed out some mistakes he felt he made and said he thought Betts could help the team more in the pass game after they fell behind. This a perfectly rational argument.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:01 PM
Planet in Peril? What’s that? I guess I have to click on the ad to find out.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:01 PM
Did Joey not learn from all the fools (including Portis) who tried to rise to the defense of Michael Vick?
When ANY reporter ANYWHERE asks you about another player’s situation, treat it like it was a contract dispute. Don’t get involved.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:01 PM
also, whether he’s right or wrong, Portis has thrown his o-line under the bus all year. they aren’t great, but you gotta take care of the hands that take care of you (ISOTONERS!!!)
December 10th, 2008 at 5:02 PM
Everytime an athlete speaks up for himself, it doesn’t make him a ” me first person”. That’s some intellectually lazy assed logic.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:04 PM
didn’t say everytime Darrell. I’m talking about Portis
December 10th, 2008 at 5:05 PM
What has he done that makes him me first?
December 10th, 2008 at 5:07 PM
Portis wasn’t speaking up for himself. He was, like JA said, throwing his o-line and his coach under the bus. His coach did his job in putting the players on the field he felt gave them the best chance to win. Portis complaining here that he wasn’t one of those players is, by definition, “me-first.”
December 10th, 2008 at 5:08 PM
Jack Welch loves candor.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:09 PM
His coach looked for a scapegoat becaue his offense has bogged down/ become predictable in the last 6 weeks, and instead of looking within he tried to blame it on the best player on the team. He wasn’t having it.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:11 PM
since Sportsgal isn’t here to correct grammar, I’ll do it. Why is it hard for people to understand the difference between “don’t” and “doesn’t”?
December 10th, 2008 at 5:12 PM
he practices when he wants and thinks he should decide when to be on the field and when he shouldn’t. not his call, its the coaches. just because it was one way in the past doesn’t mean its the same way now. listen to your coach and STFU, i say.
i’m not even a skins fan, I just hear this bullshit all the time living here.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:13 PM
Al – “doesn’t” requires an entire extra syllable to say and two more letters to type than “don’t”. I don’t think I can explain it any better than that.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:14 PM
If Zorn threw him under the bus, then he’s in the wrong.
But to return the favor by throwing his coach and fellow players under the bus isn’t the right way to go about fixing things.

Mayweather to return. Wants to fight Pac Man.

Reminds me of when Homer Simpson bought a gun and told Lisa “you don’t want the Queen of England kicking down your door, do you?”
December 10th, 2008 at 5:16 PM
I believe Homer said King of England
December 10th, 2008 at 5:16 PM
He did the same thing when he ran for 120+ yards for 5 weeks in a row and it was no problem. It has only become a problem once the offense became predictable. There were a few times when the decision to play Portis (the Giants and Cowboys game for two) were game time decisions, so that would go along with him not practicing during the week. Zorn should worry less about Portis taking unecessary hits in practice in December, after carrying the ball 25 times the previous Sunday, and should worry more about coming up with a plan B.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:18 PM
Am I supposed to have a house and let everyone come in and murder my family?
Reminds me of when Homer Simpson bought a gun and told Lisa “you don’t want the Queen of England kicking down your door, do you?â€
No kidding.
Can anyone remind me — was Plaxico in his house when his gun went off? Or are night clubs extensions of their homes?
December 10th, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Zorn saying Portis wasn’t making the correct decisions might be “throwing his player under the bus” but it doesn’t make it any less true. Portis’ reaction is classic me-first.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:19 PM
This is absolutely true. Addtionally a lot of good 9mm ammo will penetrate walls easily, which is problematic once you introduce your family into the equation.
Way to go is sawed off, semi-automatic, 20 gauge shotgun with buck shot. Same pray and spray, but bigger magazine and lower recoil than 12 gauges. Paired with a .38 short, nobody is getting into my house.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Could be rational, but there’s nothing rational about it if you’ve seen Portis and Betts play for the Skins.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:19 PM
I think what Zorn is worried about is his players thinking there is a double standard for stars, and wanted to put an exclamation point next to it.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Isn’t Porter the same asshole who jumped Levi Jones at a blackjack table in Vegas?
When have we ever seen that kind of “realness” from Tom Brady or Eli Manning? Keep it classy, Joey.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:20 PM
f both of these guys. I’d rather talk about The Simpsons (although Family Guy is starting the become the “go to” show on Sundays).
And it kills me that Peter King likes that show – I don’t think old people should be able to watch it.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Plan B = Betts.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Plan B = fail
December 10th, 2008 at 5:24 PM
Can I get an AMEN?
December 10th, 2008 at 5:28 PM
Agreed.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:30 PM
As a Giant fan I can’t believe I’m talking up for a Redskin, but Portis is a beast.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:33 PM
It’s such a shame that people have to (and are allowed to) do shit like this to become relevant in the sports world.
It’s clear that now that “Chad Ocho Cinco” is temporarily irrelvant, there are a dozen or so narcissists who would gladly grab his spotlight.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:38 PM
Valid point. TBD believes this; i’m in the handgun camp. shotguns have to be reloaded … better hit with that first shot. handgun clip is locked and if you have the crimson trace, i like your chances.
December 10th, 2008 at 5:41 PM
//As endorsed by Omar Little
December 10th, 2008 at 5:45 PM
I still think the Redskins would be a better team with Ladell Betts at RB and Champ Bailey at CB
December 10th, 2008 at 5:57 PM
You shouldn’t miss with a shotgun in a house with a proper spread loaded. Also, the average person isn’t hitting anyone on purpose with a handgun, especially in a high stress, presumably low visibility situation. Handguns are for sport, intimidation, and getting killed accidentally, not for protecting your home.
December 10th, 2008 at 6:29 PM
They semi-automatic shotguns, you can get 20 gauge models that hold 6+ rounds in the magazine. As TG said, with a good spread you ain’t missing shit. Recall reading once that even highly trained police and soldiers miss almost 60% of the time under simulated stress situations with handguns.
